  1. Yes in as much that rubescens is not naturally found in the lake and is line bred from A.maleri NB: "german reds" are more specific in that they are line bred from from Maleri "chipoka" Rubescens are not that specific ie. Maleri line bred
  2. A theoretical Question raised from chance. I have breeding only tanks for my peacocks to prevent hybrisation. I needed to move some fish around so for a few days had a maleri "gold" male in with my rubescens females. The obvious happened and I have two Rubescens girls holding. My question Would these fry be considered hybrids? The rubescens are line bred from Maleri, but are slow to colour up and in my experience are timid in the company of other peacocks. The golds however colour up at a very young age, and are more gregarious. Am I line breeding if I take the best "reds"of the young males and breed back with my Rubescens girls in an attempt to bolster the rubescens colouring up ability, OR am I hybridising? NB: these fish would be kept seperately from fry with parents of same fish.
  3. can you do some shots without flash and with the halide on. Would be cool to see. Thinking of going metal halide/fluro combo myself to get that marine feel.
  4. I gave them a go a couple yrs back. Got 20 and put them in planted tank(50ltrs). Even then never really saw them. Pretty but too expensive i think for what you get
  5. Will try and get some shots up of mine. Now have two males bewteen 15cm-17cm and one 14cm BGJD female in tank with largest male. These two have been sparring and liplocking constantly but no spawning, or nothing from it. Smaller male also has flecks of gold through him. It will be interesting with Phil's experiment, as there are no reported successfull breeding of EBJD X EBJD to viable young.
  6. Hi I'd say-If you can get some, then for sure "Prazi" is praziquantyal and is the drug. Droncit is a trade name of that product. A intestinal wormer for sheep, cattle, dogs and fish. If you know a farmer...! As Ryans has said it won't deal to all worms but your symptons sounded likely as intestinal. 'Still eating but not gaining'. I go 15ml/100ltrs on my malawi tanks. mix in well, turn off filter but not bubblers for 30 mins. Vacumn well nxt day. I do this as a regiular program if tank has new outside inhabitants.
  7. Could be a few things. Can you get some 'prazi' for worming, most probable cause at this stage. What size was the fish you introduced. Up your feeding, and decent waterchange after worming.
  8. Have a Peroni at Piazza Navona for us back here. Going to Firenze?
  9. You'll be fine putting two more girls in there. Will settlre the male down
  10. One or two of the blues would be perfect. I keep two with some plecs on bottom, a few angelicus loaches and 11 Colombian tetras. Even had some Sajica juvi's in there at 2cm and blues didn't even consider them. They are nothing like their Jack Dempsey cousins in terms of aggression.

    A Casualty

I lost a female yesterday but result was 2 others holding. She was the least dominant and perhaps not as conditioned but I think it was alpha that dealt to her. Survival of the fittest I guess. Harsh but means just the ends in nature I guess.
  12. Electric Blue Dempsey's wouldn't bother anything in there, and would look great colur option with what you got.
  13. poor platy sort of peacock X mbuna looking. Or one fat torpedo
  14. Yes Nxt time. Your parents a quite young so will probably take a few times before they get it right. They'll get the idea soon enough.
  15. I'd be tempted to use this as a trial run until you get fully sorted. the pair will most probably breed again. its a lot of work to raise up Discus fry successfully and get the best offspring. I would suggest your attrition rate in your circumstances would be sizeable, and do you want to go throiugh all that for a dozen fry?. Get the pair in the 60ltr tank with sponge filter at 29 degrees. get a breeding cone and get yourself set up with a BBS culture. 10 ltr water change every 1-2 days once eggs have hatched, even better if you siphon and fill slowly with airhose. what are the parents ?
  16. I have 2-3 breeding pairs/trios and some bred at 7cm and some much later. I found a stand of bamboo and used old dead pieces about 5cm internal diameter.and 15cm long using the natural segment ends as back wall. My males love it as a cave and something to munch
  17. If you only have one female she will take about 1 mth to be be gravid again. Yes, as stated, the eggs were probably sucked through net. Why it a good idea to camouflage eggs with plants or as Simian suggests with container.
  18. So gone, gone? or dead and white Were they sitting on net bottom, were they hidden from cichlids? Pure protein Vs hungry cichlid.
  19. When they get bigger they will go into hidey mode. he is probably eating algae in the tank but not hairy or bearded if thats whats on wood. As others, put wood in bucket with him and scrub. He'll be fine.
  20. Keep aerated and hopefully they will take care of themselves. Scoop out any dead ones that will turn white That egg sack will feed them for the next, after that throw in some pleco spirulina wafers and keep in the net as long as possible before releasing. Good luck.
  21. you would need to put an air stone in there and get it so some amount of current you in can get there. if you can do When the eggs get to wrigglers with tails you will more chance for survival. Also put some plants or something to stop the cichlids noticing them too much. Maybe start planning ahead and get a bamboo cave in the tank for nxt time. A lot easier to take dad and eggs.
  22. Do you have any option in terms of transferring eggs to safer place, even to an egg bubbler system in that tank. Otherwise I'd suggest getting some more wood rocks etc and stacking around the pot to make it hard for cichlids to get near and for lots of nooks and cranny's for fry to hide in when they leave cave . Anything with some algae on it would be best where some of the young can at least get to a more defenable size. What are the tankmates?
  23. Ended up going to Animates in Lower Hutt and Ngaranga(?) valley and wasn't much to see. Hutt pets was intereseing but yeah my pick was also Animalz in Petone. Good tanks, fish in good condition and the staff actually engaged in conversation. All made for a more enjoyable drive back.
