  1. It would happen easily enough and with the fish we get nothing would surprise. But no way I would call the fish on the Auction Fuscos. Straight ones anyway T&S Just keep an eye on her. Was she removed from tank for any period of time? that will affect her "place' in the tank. She may just be laying low and out of the way as it sounds like other female is at least in spawning mode if not successfully while she will still be 2-3 weeks from being gravid again so no need to make herself obvious.
  2. Don't the spots tend to disappear with age? The fish in the photo are definitely sub adults and losing spottiness- unlike human where that trait is reversed in Sub adults. Note that seller also selling a livingstoni And saw this also, as another comparison http://www.trademe.co.nz/a.aspx?id=268575011
  3. Yes Polys http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/r ... ?genus=136 Only other option is livingstoni which is less blotchy. Poly are spawning at 6-8 cm so before adult colouring. These were listtd as Fusco on wholesalers list so seller is probably just quoting the name he/she bought as which is a shame. Fusco have a completely different bodyshape and are thought by many to be closer to Tyrannochromis due to this. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/r ... ?genus=214 I had Fusco's some time ago and males are very hard on females. I think they need multiple females or at least other big Nimbos breeders to divert aggression. Don't no situation down there but 6cm polys are in shops for $25 each so that auction seems high to me.

    Scarlet pleco

This is a link to the fish many are correctly talking of as Scarlet Pleco-L#25, and is what I have- http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/sp ... ies_id=188 and this is Hypostomus Cochliodon which was wrongly given "Scarlet pleco" as name from importer and has appeared as such on wholesale import list for the last 6 mths. http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/sp ... es_id=1324 Many are now determining wrongly this fish as scarlet. Some even have determined to give it even another name. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... =265786201 Why it couldn't be given its correct name i can not explain to you. To get a shot of My L25 I would need to dismantle my rockwork in a 600ltr tank which I'll do nxt time I give it a good clean

    Scarlet pleco

Mine is about 16cm now. Quite black with a reddy orange flash on tail and fins. They are quite a reclusive fish. Yeah they came in about 14-18 mths ago along with 'leopard Cactus' L114 which is about same size. Both are Pseudacanthicus genus. I got one of each and have been feeding mixed diet with plenty of Novatab shrimp pellets. I wish I got more of each but were around $200 each retail They do get big but a pair of 25cm each bred in a 2ft tank in Japan, and as far as I've read are bred commercially in Eastern europe. Unfortunately there is also hypostomus cochliodon which has acquired the "Scarlet plec" as common name and they are around at the moment. See one of them is now on Tm as "Red finned blue eyed" Ironically just cleaned that tank today and my L25 was out but didn't bother getting a pic-nxt time
  6. what are Tankmates? What sex is Nic. any other fish showing any signs of stress. If only Nic sounds like there is someone in the tank that has developed a disliking for it. Nics do like being in a groups, they are quite stressful when alone, and this is often represented by them being nippy and antisocial to others, but without backup I don't think they are that tough. I've seen them go from hero to zero in very short time.
  7. I had one Golden with 4 'Angelicus' for a while. All were same size when I got them but The zebra almost got to double their size but still hung out with them no worries, so should be fine with your suggestion. Your substrate sounds fine. Mine ate a mixed diet of food, but never saw it go the snails.
  8. Yep a few days out in the sun after a srub should fix it.
  9. What ever comes out of Ira's garden hose I think you'll find.
  10. I have an issue with the top pic in terms of your ID SamH. Clearly it is in a tank with no water so clearly not aquatic or even amphibious so it must be 'Tortoiseshell" Or is it just trying to be Koi.
  11. Welcome to the world of Hypans!
  12. Mate This isn't a 'He said, she said" scenario I'm not looking to ID the fish further than has already been discussed. I agree with the your cooment that "dedicated" pleco sites "MAY" help with an ID. P44 has done this and that is cool. The fish was imported has an Ancistrus species, it is sold in shop as "spotted Ancistrus". I am questioning the process of looking to ID a fish as something very particular when only 'possibly' and "looks likely' are the best answers that come from even those "dedicated" sites. Clearly you have experience enough to feel your ID is 100% water tight and I respect that fact. But, I Don't have to agree with you, nor do I feel the necessity to cover old ground because of that. I'm bemused though by the suggestion that my opinion is less valid because I haven't visited certain sites. You have already commented on "pretty peckoltia" on another thread. What is your comment on that name given. What about "Blue spot ancistrus" What about "leopard frog pleco" that was imported here with no L#, but was given L#134 almost immediately because of that name. This is Scarlet Pleco here Would you call it L#25? This came in as "Flathead Gold nugget" Abnd this was imported as L128 blue phantom. And these two as Ancistrus species All the fish mentioned above have come through the same importer. As you can see there are advantages for having such ambiguous criteria for importation. Whether the true ID of these fish were ommited intentionally to get them in, or it was never known, or was part of marketing is up for conjecture, but they do serve as historical reference in that I believe we should be very careful here in NZ before rushing to positions such as yours. Particularly when the best that can be offered is 'Looks Likely" If someone is privy to information about the fish being discussed here that would cement their position further then that is great, and it would good to hear it. Cheers!
  13. Firstly I think you are putting too much weight on the PC ID. I followed that thread and while I would suggest PC is a wonderful resource and soure of knowlege, to suggest that everything on that site should be taken as gospel would be as much as suggesting every Kiwi male is a potential All Black. In this case, as in many, we are still talking in the most part keen amateurs who are just as likely to see the first close facsimile of a fish that is suggested and run what they now believe to be the Status quo. Their knowlege of the fishes origin is as limited as ours and I would suggest in any situation where there is no vested interest such outcomes are even more likely. Add to that they have no historical knowlege of the issues we have with the dubious origins and naming of many of the plecs we get here and I believe that must be a huge mitigating factor in any conclusions drawn. I also would note that none of the 'big guns" of PC like Yann, Shane, janne or Silurus who have something like 25,000 posts between them have given an opinion. MatsP who has 11,000 posts has said only that it "looks likely" and the rest of the ID's that you are basing so much on-AKA 'multiples' - comprise of 3 other members who have 600 posts between them. It is Human nature it seems on such forums for someone to say " looks like" and before you know, it becomes fact particularly when you have titled one of the threads "Rio Ucayali". What to do- No it is not an ideal situation we have here where it is almost in the importers best interest to label something as loosely as they do because a 'new' fish may receive negative reception from authorities. But it is pure guess work to extend the argument to your conclusions and once again it more a case of smoke and mirrors than rock solid fact. "Two wrongs don't make a right" I have no concerns with you personally P44 as I believe we are in agreement on many points here and I wish someone could give us the ID we both are looking for. But look at your title of this thread " ...whatever they are". Or your comment in the last post-"looks exactly like". Neither comment can converted to a "definitely is" situation Says a lot doesn't it? But while we discuss this look around and see that this is going to be a load of 'gobbly gook' to others in the thread, and that for many, no matter what the outcome of your research on how those fish turn out, the dye is cast already for many in terms of the name. That is ultimately the point I am trying to convey.
  14. Yes, that's exactly would you do! Mate I wish as much as you do that we were better served by the importers of these fish but we aren't. I'm not saying that it isn't a lovely fish. I'm not saying that you shouldn't be passionate about them I'm not saying you haven't the right to call a fish in your tank what ever you want. What I am suggesting is that the way this particular fish has acquired this name is based on whimsy, hope and wishful thinking with little or no adherence to any fact particularly in responsible scientific sense and this is, as I see it a bad president. I accept that you feel otherwise but there we have to disagree.
  15. Confused by whom and where is this confusion taking place? Please tell me your comments extend beyond transcribing info off the net. So are you willing to state categorically that the fish in P44 photo is bonafide Ancistrus sp Rio 'Ucayali' as it reads like that in your post. Brave call as I would tend to suspect that even those who came up with this ID are now questioning the merits of their methodolgy as they now watch a fish that was juvenile and they ID'd based on adult photo's off the net of a very specific fish grow to be something very quickly that make that ID at the very least questionable. I'm thinking of running a book now to see how long that name lasts as the penny drops for a few individuals of the ramifications should Bonafide Sp Rio Ucayali actually get imported. This has been a very enlightening process to any who wish to look with two objective eyes.
  16. yes as far what I've read. But then 5 or 6yrs ago when a 'dub' was exotic and knowlege was limited these things were not well known. Still looked awesome though. Even now our tropheus stocks here are mostly blacks. Back in those days we also put heaps of current into our plec tanks also because we thought that would make them breed.
  17. I remember going to Rcon place long time ago where he had 6ftr crammed with Ikola and Pembas. I was sold on having a tropheus tank one day once i saw that
  18. The key thing is to keep them seperated from the plethora of other Ancistrus. Hopefully you got at least three breeding groups there P44. Maybe start selling off spare groups in the future to others who can do the above to spread them around. But the moment they start being sold as singles issues will arise as ID's will get lost. Maybe we can call them sp 'Rio Ucayali?NZ' since they were given an ID after they arrived
  19. Yeah but Marks computer has got a large screen so he got confused with the close ups.
  20. Hi Omar Yes a few peacock fanatics here but we have limited supplies here but a few have good stock. Have you checked out this forum http://www.cichlid-forum.com/phpBB/index.php peacock I breed chilumba Rubescens Jacobfreibergi Others are breeding Maleri golds & reds Hans baenschi Cobue-nice Baenschi/sunshine-bit dodgy Blue Orchids-nice Dragonsblood Hueseri Welcome to the forum-where you from in SA
  21. I 'm with A.prophecy I let the fish alone and feed a varied diet for a few weeks, even missing water changes. Then a big water change-I do 50%- and I've tried ramping up and decreasing temp at this time but both scenarios tend to work. I have a 100ltr 3 ft tank that I use for breeding and in that case I use 50ltrs from the tank fish came in and 50% fresh. this also works. If you have more than one tank then taking male away and reintroducing to females can work also.
  22. Yes the colouring around eyes and gill plates get better with age. The alplha pair are about 2-2.5 yrs. There were are few to start but the other males were being nailed so they went. There is one other in with the pair which alpha male will tolerate so assuming sub-dominant female. Had a few spawns. they are cool to watch then as one spawn will babysit another. I feed a combination of foods, mostly vege and shrimp based A couple of shots; young Aulonocara Jacobfriebergi male- Copadichromis Azureus male
  23. Update: Took these shots last week. Put the rainbows into breeding tank with big bunch of Indian Fern overnight and then back to their tank next day mid morning. They colour up beautifully, the males lighting up and continually changing colours. Came home after 5 days away and about 50-60 fry of 2-3mm in breeding tank. I not completely sorted on food for them but will see how they go.
  24. Brichardi/Pulcher Petricola and Cuckoo Syno's Been a while since I've seen either sexfasciatus or tretocephalus around.
