  1. rotala sp. generally turn a nice red, also try osiros sword, horemani sword (red variety) or if you can get your hands on one may even a red tiger lotus.
  2. check how many lumen the tubes put out, i think lifeglo 24w puts out about 1700 lumen, which is near double that of powerglo and aquaglo. for your tank size you'd need roughly 3300-5500 lumen, 5500 probably what you want to aim for since you want to grow red plants well. remember though that unless you back up all of this light with the correct proportions of carbon and other nutrients, it would be a waste of money buying two 24w t5 ho units (96w all up).
  3. have you cleaned the glass and the suction cups? a smooth clean surface should work, otherwise it must be a faulty product. as smidey said, moisture is required for the suction to work, and there will be less strain on the suction cups once the tank is full of water.
  4. ill go without one then. i'm sure my clown won't mind too much, he's grown quite attached to his rock. however, would it be possible for her to inhabit a torch, hammer or frogspawn coral? or would they generally be too small to host my maroon?
  5. rotala rotundifolia, hygrophila polysperma, anubias nana, osiros sword, dwarf saggitaria, indian fern and ludwigia repens. i just replaced the dwarf sag today with some horemani swords because they're a lot more controlable. i bought all my plants from my lfs.
  6. indeed i did... . that was before i had my skimmer, i had been doing water changes every three days of 25%. i went on holiday and when i came back the nitrate had soared during my absence and sadly my anemone didn't recover, despite my best efforts.
  7. thanx guys, i'll keep an eye out for some nice leathers, i quite like brains as well. do you think i've got room for an anenome for my maroon clown? i don't mind not getting any more corals if that's what i need to do.
  8. get what so clean? the tank? i keep up with water changes have a 2213 on a 60L tank, feed sparingly, use loads of plants and choose algae eating fish.
  9. quite possibly, do they just become females when there are no other clowns?
  10. i know the flying foxes will outgrow the tank, but they're awesome algae eaters and as they are currently the same size as my cardinals, they pose no immediate problem. i gave the grass away.
  11. have you guys got any recommendations as to wat corals i should buy?lighting isn't an issue and i've got x2 6045s in an 80L tank along with a deltec mce 300. i have two cleaner shrimp and a maroon clown. any help appreciated. thanks, hugo
  12. UPDATE: i've gone tropical on it.... i have 22 cardinals, 3 chain loaches, 3 ottos, 5 small flying fox and a pair of blue rams. i'm doing water changes every 4 days and am using a pressurized co2 sytem and an eheim surface skimmer. so far so good.
  13. this is my maroon clown, he loves to chase my finger up and down the glass. i'm hoping of getting an anenome for him soon, but from wat the guy at HFF said, it'll have to be quite large to host him. atm this is his cave, under my mushrooms... chasing my finger:
  14. what about a dark navy blue? compromise between black and blue

    Clouds

how high is the tank? could be that it has an insufficient surface area for adequate oxygen exchange. overstocking sounds right. what filter are you running?
  16. IMO the key is just to be patient. don't get over excited and buy all your fish at once or on the same day as you have set up the aquarium. of course you need a fish or two in there to get the cycling process going but choose tough, cheap fish, maybe even an algae eater to prevent algae during the tank's early stages. test your water and invest in the best filter you can afford for your aquarium.
  17. looks awesome...you can unscrew the metal slides from your t5 unit since you're hanging it.
  18. sweet, just remember that if you want to grow amazon swords as best as you can, you'll probably have to sell your pleco.
  19. i saw a red sea co2 set up in HFF mt roskill, about $600 and then you need a gas bottle. very good if you can afford it, and a lot more control over how much co2 you're putting in and certainty that is it co2 by itself and not any yeast by-product. carbon is extremely important for plant growth but remember the Lieberg minimum law, if one factor is missing or not in proportion, growth will be restricted.
  20. IMO if you give your bn lots of fresh veges and sinking pellets you are defeating the purpose of having them in your tank, and that is to eat the algae. they will damage swords as they try to graze algae off the top of the leaves, therefore choose: ancistrus type catfish or amazon swords...
  21. blacken out all light from the tank for 3 days, try a 1.5x dose of flourish excel (make sure you don't have plants along the water's surface and your filter is causing some disturbance along the surface, otherwise your fish could suffocate), introduce young blackline flying foxes and remove as many affected leaves as possible.
  22. quickly remove as much of this algae as you can. it is a plague...introduce some young black line flying foxes as well as they can eat it.
  23. if you plan on keeping amazon swords then go without the bristlenose, they rasp too heavily on the plants' leaves thus damaging their epidermis. or go without amazon swords. or you could try otocinclus, black line flying fox, mollies, platies. generally the damage is too severe for the plant to recover.

    filter carbon

the majority of carbon available has been washed in phosphoric acid to activate it, so therefore it may even raise your phospates.....
