  1. ok, so much for placid...i guess he's more lazy and clever than anything else! I got up this morning to find a few platy babies and yet no sign of their mother  (Happy Mothers' Day!) ...he must have waited 'til sundown and caught her off her guard  but i've still got 2 platies plus a few babies...not bad for 3 weeks with an oscar
  2. well, i've only had him for about 3-4weeks but i have noticed some significant fin growth but it's hard to tell how fast he's growing since i check on him several times a day... thanks for all the feedback...he's blushing even redder now
  3. haha he's probs a pretty boy metro lol
  4. he's about 15cm long atm....but growing
  5. yet another week of the epic show "Survivor, platy island" and nobody has been knocked off! He seems to be the most gentle oscar when being hand-fed too, instead of lunging at my hand he comes up and kisses it!
  6. nah, the really huge african frogs...a complete congo biotope...it's a dream after all...
  7. you could maybe do a hollow hood...something that rises high enough above the waterline to prevent fish from jumping, narrow enough for a cat to have difficulty and the halide hanging from your roof... if you get enough t5s you can get the light ripples....or just go for the halogen thingo....
  8. if only i had enough $$ to set up a paludarium with some pantodon butterflies and tree frogs
  9. If you use a water conditioner like AquaPlus or StressCoat i think it's best to wait a day before dosing with a plant fert as the conditioners do cause precipitation of some of the compounds...maybe that's what caused it??
  10. he still hasn't touched them! I can't believe it!
  11. haha that must be it...they are about to give birth so he must be waiting for the extra fun  I was getting a little worried when he let the platies share his pellets at the surface but i guess nature will soon take its course. thanks!
  12. I recently bought and Oscar and he has an entire tank to himself apart from some platies that I had i had bred for him as a 'welcome gift' ...but, it's been 3 days and he hasn't touched them does anyone else have an oscar this lacking in aggression? thanks in advance
  13. I just got an Oscar...definitely prefer the short finned type...mine's a nice blood red one though...
  14. Thanx, guys. the one thing i would have done differently on the tank would've been putting in under-gravel heating but at it was only a 2 footer i didn't bother...excellent substrate, weekly and daily ferts, and 40% weekly water changes with good filtration and a CO2 system, not too many fish = planted aquarium. hopefully it will come down in price one day
  15. I used the RedSea Flora base stuff...it is fantastic!...it keeps the pH neutral and slowly releases nutrients, and is highly porous and it looks natural too! no other gravel etc required. However, it is VERY expensive. here are some pix (sorry they are bigger than 640 pixels): http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w50/ ... ure1-1.png first planting 3 weeks later... http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w50/ ... tedawe.jpg
  16. on an interesting note, wasn't it named 'caeruleus' for being blue?

    my reef

haha nice start Bj. so you've finally been converted to the light?
  18. my tunze nano 6045 clips broke a while back...should probably get on to that.... excellent pumps.
  19. if you let the algae coat the rocks it can be quite a good supplementary food source for cichlids too.
  20. here's link on posting pix: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4306
  21. if you cut back each emerging leaf the plant should grow a smaller one to replace it...making the sword plant smaller overall gradually.

    Crypt

even if all the leaves do melt on you, don't worry too much...when i've bought emersed grown crypts this has happened but a few weeks later fresh sprouts op out of the gravel...essentially a case of 'do not disturb'
  23. biggest problem would probably be a reduction in light intensity which could adversely affect your plants. activated carbon for a couple of days at end of treatment should be sort that out ideally you'd want to set up a hospital tank to isolate the fish and also, if your main tank is large, save on medications.
  24. ah, the joys of etymology! tenellus comes from tenellulus meaning 'dainty' or 'little' incidentally, angustus-a-um is the latin word for narrow. such plants as hygrophila angustifolia use that... so literally it's a dainty little broad-leafed sword plant
