    Acrylic tanks

how do they make acrylic? isn't there an oil crisis?
  4. yep stella beat me to it. have used this method wonderfully cos my rainbows were eating everything before my sterbais could get at it
  5. well, hey niger is latin for 'black' and usually pronounced neegir
  6. yeah i must admit i've never fed standard flake. or any red meats. soz i should have made it clearer b4, that food mix was esp for my fry not the adults, they only get spirulina flake, pellets and algae wafers with occasionally treats of mysis shrimp.
  7. i only feed tiny amounts of meaty stuff and the algae wafers have plenty of roughage. and oddly enough in dr axelrod's book it says to feed them tubifex :-? , but meh i just go with what works.
  8. not yet, but ive been conditioning up my females, and am about to do a nice water change today. so fingers crossed i guess. ive been feeding them crushed spirulina, tropigro for cichlids, shrimp pellets, freezedried tubifex worms, color bits and for when im away for longer periods of time- algae wafers!
  9. i find the best way to keep the kh etc high is to do 50% water changes weekly, gravel siphon, feed less, use coral spheres mixed with gravel and put some limestone material like shells in ur filter. i also have 10x turnover.
  10. well, so far all nine of them are growing pretty fast and getting bigger everyday! (sorry for the poor shot, but they're in a tank with heaps of sag and anubias and my camera was low on battery so i had to settle with this shot....)
  11. u could get ur grandma to knit you a "filter-cosy" for ur birthday/ Christmas....?
  12. don't weta also have heaps of nasty bacteria on their spiny legs?
  13. thanx guys. yeah it has been a bit of a mission and a half, but i think my females are finally getting it sorted, they just had to practise a little! will keep you posted with pix, so far fry are 12 days old (eggs laid 12 days ago)
  14. yay, duboisi fry! finally managed to strip at the right moment before she ate too many of the eggs, and i finally figured out a good tumbling method and water change routine....fingers crossed - aiming to get 100% success (this time )
  15. u cycled ur tank before adding all ur fish, right? my tanks the same size, fewer fish admittedly, but with a 2213 eheim. i'd probs recommend that u get some good bio media and use some cycle or stresszyme, as well as doing partial water changes over the next few days
  16. wat filter r u running? which LFS told that? how many fish did u have? wat are ur water parameters atm?
  17. u could try if ur budget allows the RedSea FloraBase, it buffers pH, releases liquid ferts, and is highly porous. but any of wat's been said above also works. i just like the look of the RedSea stuff.
  18. awesome, thanx guys. now i've just got to save up for one...
  19. thinking of getting a sixline, but not sure if it'd be compatible with my cleaner shrimp. would it eat them? any opinions would be most welcome.
  20. i saw a picture of the lake bed of Malawi and there was Val. but this was in a sandy coastal area where mbuna rarely frequent and you encounter the more predatory cichlids and fish.
  21. i have read that sand can compact after a while and doesn't allow water circulation to the roots, i suppose if u disturbed it every now and then it would work quite well. i'd recommend 2mm gravel instead of it though.
  22. Starfish, how noisy is a waterfall or river rapids or stones grinding against each other underwater?
  23. by lava rock do they mean scoria or pumice?
  24. If you've got the cash, eheim is also a very good german brand
