  1. im thinking of starting him on medicated food (metro) from the start to hopefully knock out any internal parasites. I had the same problem last year with my pair laying but i wasn't quick enough getting the eggs out and the female ate them, both died soon after of the head tumours etc
  2. ditto, call me crazy but i bought another male today after deciding severalmonths ago not to bother any more with them again... just so hard to resist! if i spot a nice looking female i mght try the breeding in a separate tank for them
  3. not everybody has the funds to buy everything they want for their tank straight away!
  4. for me bought a tank with goldfish in it but wanted to set it up as a discus tank, did some searches on google and found fnzas! After visiting organism and redwood i decided a marine tank was really what i wanted as well. Bought an existing tank and lduncan from the forum helped me set it up, transfer it and look after my livestock for me. ever since then its been all the helpful ppl on fnzas, (and another forum i shouldn't mention), thats been providing info for me. Plus heaps of great info from john at organism
  5. you still lurking around here huh? did you set up a tank again or too busy?
  6. siphon it off and try not to let it break up so that it doesn't spread
  7. thats great, really liking the aquascaping!
  8. Are you referring to the black area or the fact the coral is hung over and limp? If you mean the black stuff then does it peel away easily and does it have a reddish tinge? if so its probably cyano. If you mean the limp appearance at the coral then I'm not great at coral IDs but that looks like a sinularia or some sort of devils finger leather? If so they often retract their polyps and shed their outer layer. In a couple of days the polyps extend again and they appear plump and happy. Mine does it a couple of times a month
  9. too late now, but i had the exact same thing with my tank matt small leak at the base of the overflow. My tank was full of livestock so what we had to do was half drain the tank, remove part of the liverock and sand surrounding the overflow (= PITA). Drained the overflow and then used some silicone i bought from tim to do an inside patch job. My overflow is so tiny that it was a mission to get my arm down there (lucky for my girly arms). Anyway that worked and its all fine now
  10. i recommend the tunze top off i've found it to be great (although pricey), uses laser levels rather than a float switch so no worries of the float switch clogging etc. Plus it sounds an alarm when the water level in your sump increases above your max water line

    thought the trial was canned?
  12. thats interesting, i had 4 up until a couple of weeks ago but sold them. They were fairly large around 12cm or so and they still ate all the algae, also must have been eating the baby snail population as ive suddenly discovered a lot of baby snails since they were sold
  13. that horrid loopy, my sympathies to you, i had something similar a few weeks ago, so devastating
  14. yes i'm impatiently waiting for it to be released here, the videos of it look impressive
  15. looking good! glad to hear the move went well, its always such a relief to finally have them in position and not have to move them anymore. So when does the changeover begin?
  16. i find my mushies do much beter in dark conditions than light, except the hairy mushrooms they seem to love the light
  17. i have found joes juice to be fairly useless on mine, resistant little buggers

my mistake: re xenia, previously i remember you (reef) mentioning xenia liking organics which i misinterpreted as nitrates. makes sense now i think about it as my nitrates are usually 5 or 0 but my xenia grows like a weed
  19. he'll definitely eat your snails, i've had a big surge in my snail population now i no longer have my wrasse. Plus he will eat your copepods so if you have any other fish that rely solely copepods for food (ie mandarins) then they will directly compete for that food source

How are corals such as xenia that like a bit of nitrate in their tank likely to fare in a MM system?
  21. never had a problem with mine and cleaner shrimp

I'll be watching your thread with interest, ill be changing my tank design in the next few months including adding a larger sump with refugium. I was toying with the idea of adding a miracle mud system but not sure if it really necessary with the small amount of sps in my system
