  1. one of the key things with discus is that they like a lot of clean fresh water, so in general you need to do more water changes than you would with other species or a community tank. Also they tend to do better either with other discus or specific species, ie cardinals, etc, they are slow eaters, and prefer warmer water than a lot of other tropical fish so most aren't suitable to have as tank mates, eg, swordtails, angels, gouramis, saes etc
  2. always amazed by your photos, great pic of the clownfish
  3. beautiful, would love to have another boxer
  4. nah much better to have a quiet overflow, and have a secondary backup. Im redoing my marine tank at the moment and as well as the secondary overflow i'm adding in one of the aquamedic overflow strainers. essentially its a overflow pipe with lots of slits in it so if the top hole gets blocked it will still drain
  5. i have a full siphon on my marine tank, livingart full siphon is where you have a tap on the inlet to your sump you can then throttle the amount of water flowing in the sump. you throttle it so the water level is a couple of inches above your standpipe and hen you avoid the noisy gurgling sucking noise
  6. probably nothing to do with you if all the other fish are fine so don' blame yourself, he may have just not been right from the start
  7. doesn' sound good, i don't think there's too much you can do, levels in the tank are all ok? how is your wrasse behaving?
  8. sounds like internal parasites to me, long faeces, frayed fins, gone off food or spitting foods are all symptom, i agree with conch you should treat with metronidazole
  9. lol at least its not just me!
  10. yeah colour blind, is it just me or does it look pink the top photo?
  11. ooh jealous , is it an rbta? hows the move gone, i see you've got a little diatom growth hows that going
  12. yes if i was to take it on it would just be for pity, i have a spare tank/skimmer but i think i have too much on my plate with the other tanks to really try it , poor thing
  13. you could perhaps see if her eyes responds to light stimulus, when i turn on my lights in my discus tank their pupils are large and expanded, once adjusted to the light the pupils retract. You could try this with your pair and see if you notice any difference in contraction and expansion in the pupils
  14. i had thought about it but wasn' t sure if swim bladder problem would be something that would come right
  15. that trigger is not in a good way , i had a look at him a few days ago and he seems to have some sort of swim bladder problem, keeps lying on the coral rock and seems unable to keep upright falling left and right
  16. is he currently in your refugium? i'm very tempted to get a copperband, little worried about their track record of survival in captivity and their tendency to be hard to train to eat frozen/prepared food.. Whats been your experience?
  17. can the virus be contracted by other species?
  18. its getting there, the mandarin looks fatter but i never really see that many around, im sure they're there, just hiding
  19. yeah unfortunately ran out of time to go and see for myself. Would have been a nice addition of colour its a very empty tank a the mo with only a blenny and a mandarin in a five footer.
  20. I was hoping to buy a mate for my mandarin off trademe last night but the price went a bit too high :-?
  21. hows the firefish today?
  22. yeah planning to have a fuge in my next setup. One silver lining from my tank disaster was with only the mandarin and blenny left theres been a big expolosion in pods and snails and my male mandarin has finally started to fatten up. So i plan on adding a fuge to the setup i'm working on at the mo so that he remains fat
  23. those coral colours look much better with the dark background, its definitely made the decision in what colour to go for my tank much easier
  24. yay, bet those tangs will be loving that extra swimming space. I see you've got a clip on light in your sump, are you going to be running a fuge or is that so you can see what you're doing in there.
  25. did you find it affected any other fish in the tank, don't really want any sort of tumour causing disease transferring to my discus
