  1. not sure sorry but i would be quarantining it, don't wan thte bubble bursting and releasing whatever is inside
  2. now thats something you don't see in the average reef aquarium... im kind of repulsed by it, i think its its slightly humanoid appearance
  3. yes the test kits can be expensive, if you have freshwater ammonia, nitrite and nitrate kits these can also be used for saltwater, you will get a cloudy look to the result due to the salt but the results will be the same. as suggested earlier salifert make very good test kits, their phosphate kit has a very low range to it so is ideal for accurate phosphate testing
  4. what are you studying at otago wilson?
  5. how come? are they doing a documentary?
  6. yes they are fully submersible, i haven't had any problems with mine but i've heard of other ppl having some problems. One annoying thing is that they don't have a temperature dial just a + or - so you can' t set it to a temp, you have to guess and adjust accordingly. jagers are good heaters, i've found their thermostat to be accurate
  7. T5s are nice to simulate the dawn/dusk light, lets you see some of the night critters come out too (plus i actually prefer the look of the blue lights)
  8. i think i run my 250W MHs around 22cm from water surface and they could go closer, so 150W should be able to be closer than that
  9. 25 would be the normal temp for a marine tank
  10. i saw that tank 'in the flesh' briefly when i was out there looking otu the 5ft setup he had for sale. i'm sure you'll have fun over here in the saltie section
  11. i bought it from www.bulkreefsupply.com
  12. adult males are supposed to have a more 'jowly' appearance to their jaw from what i've read
  13. completely agree with the less is more for the rocks, planning on having a lot less rock and avoiding the rockwall look when i get the new tank up
  14. have you tried ordering through john, i thought reef was breeding them up north?
  15. looking good matt! i'l have to pm you to ask some detials about it. I'm doing the same at the moment, want to replace my tank, but not sure what to do, i like the look of the juwel vision 450 tanks and am thinking about getting one of these but the problem is the stand. Ilike your rimu tank very nice! thats the other option i was thinking of going with. RE: my misfortune with the sand, i really think more and more that it was the rubber or cork tiles leaching something rather than the sand as i didn't see any black spots in the sand... i think you'd be safe with the sand (IMO)
  16. looking good, my lawnmower blenny is my fav fish too . BTW what sort of lighting are you using, tank looks bright but i see you've got a glass lid how is the temp of the tank with the glass lid
  17. my remaining sea hare also died this week, got sucked in to the overflow pipe and through the grating... luckily i have holes drilled in the pipe to stop it overflowing, i won't be replacing it though as seem to having this lemming like suicide tendency. If you're after a replacement 6 line there was one for sale at bubble and squeak on blenheim rd
  18. , thats no good matt, what is it with fish deaths at the moment??
  19. don't worry about the stringy poos harming the fish they should be fine, i think what you actually see is part of the fish's stomach lining being shed as the med tries to expel the parasite (or something like that from what ive read)
  20. as i understand it prazi is usually for external flukes (ie gill flukes) and metronidazole is usually what you would use for internal flukes. I've used both in the past and had quite good success for with the metro for the internal parasites. your symptoms sound similar to what i had in the link posted earlier, (holes in fins, stringy poos etc). i found the metro quite successful
  21. if thats me and matt then this must be you conch
  22.  is that what i've become an internet nanny?! i wonder how i'd look with a blue beehive....
  23. what was the time period from egg to slug? mine have laid a few times but my blue tang takes a liking to the eggs
