  1. has been full for a couple of weeks only its a fairly new tank ( bought second hand ).. i think it should be fine.. As for the silicon, can you recommend a good product? i see selleys has a glass silicon that is supposed to be ok for tanks.. Any thoughts? can you point me in the direction of a suitable product. Finally should the patch glass be as thick as the rest of the tank? ( i assume the answer is yes ) Thanks for the help..
  2. Hey Guys. So i'm buying a tank that was previously used for Marine, and im going to be running just tropical. The tank has had a hole cut in the bottom for the sump/overflow ( i think thats what its called ). the hole is seperated from the rest of the tank buy some glass that looks to have been siliconed in. So im going to be removing the extra glass and i want to know what the best/safest option is for the patching the hole. Its a 4ft tank. the hole is at a guess 1 - 2 inches in diameter My options i assume are 1. Find something in a plumbing store thats like a bung of some kind to cover the hole ( not sure if this is going to be strong enough due to the pressure of the water ) 2. Get a small bit of glass and some suitable silicon and put a patch of the hole ( is this going to be safe, if the hole was say 1 - 2 inches in diameter how big a bit of glass should i use ). Whats your thoughts. Also i have a second tank ( smaller 2.5 ft ).. i noticed that it has a chip on the outside bottom corner, the chip isnt very big, looks like some glass splintered off, dont believe its effected the sealant on the egde, but not 100% sure. Is this an issue, the tank is full currently ( i think its about 170L ).. just want to make sure its not going to explode. Thanks.
  3. Hi Thanks for the invite , i'll see if i can come along, my tank is now up and running along with the occupants that came free with the tank (12 goldfish). Originally the idea was to sell the goldfish and set the tank up as a tropical tank but they've kind of grown on me so now the plan is to buy another tank (4ft) and set that up as a tropical tank . Ive posted a wanted ad in the trade exchange section but if anyone here knows of a 4ft tank and stand being sold i'd be keen to know .
  4. Yup thats the one.. rang them in the morning, and they said they would pull apart a boxed one to sell me the taps.. Went and picked them up at lunch time. Didnt charge a premium or anything!!! Top store.. Going back this weekend to see what else they can help me with ..
  5. Nice store in redwood has offered to open a boxed unit and sell me the taps and he'll order a new pair in to replace.. I'm heading there at lunch.. but a big thumbs up to them
  6. so i will need to buy now filters aswell if the unit isnt being used? Im a little lost as to what i should do.. the unit hasnt been used now for about 24 hours.. i cleaned the sponges in the filter as they were dirty as anything, do i need to do anything more to get it going correctly again? Thanks for the help
  7. Yeah no luck there or Critter kingdom.. people dont seem to stock replacement parts bugger..
  8. Yeah some places can order them, but it takes 2 weeks to get How long can fish survive without filtered water? Thanks
  9. Hey Guys. Have a problem, im new to having a tank and i bought a used set up yesterday, got it and the fish home last night, and went to hook up the Aqua One Canister Filter. The connection point where i screw in the hoses to the Filter is leaking.. i believe the issue is the tap, there is a plastic part that is broken.. so i need to replace the tap, but i cant find them in christchurch? Can anyone suggest a good place? i believe they are for an AquaOne CF 1200.. I have my fish ( cold water goldfish) in a large Chilly bin at the moment, bit i dont know how long they will survive in there.. perhaps not long enough to get a new tap ordered in.. So What should i do? Any help appreciated Thanks
  10. Hi guys thanks alot for the info, knowing the setup costs excluding livestock is very useful and at this stage i think i'll go for a tropical setup and then look at a marine setup later on. Off to pick up my tank today so can't wait
  11. thanks for the all the replies, hopefully ill make a decision in the next day or two, im sure ill be happy either way
  12. thanks for the welcome, hmm will have some thinking to do about the fw vs sw setup , the attraction of marine is pretty tempting . In terms of initial setup prepping the tank and excluding buying fish is teh setup costs vastly different?
  13. Hi everyone thought i'd introduce myself, I'm based in Christchurch and am currently toying between the idea of a tropical vs marine tank. I've been crusing the site the last week or so reading and researching some background information. I've just purchased a secondhand aquaone regal 80 tank (175l)which i'm picking up tomorrow (very excited ). I have a couple of questions which i'm hoping someone can give me some advice on. I'd love to do a marine FO or FOWLR but am a little hesitant. When i was younger my family had tropical tanks and i'm wondering if the step up to doing marine is much of step up. Also i'm not sure what the differences are in costs in setting up a marine FO or FOWLR tank are versus a tropical tank, maybe somebody could give me some insight? I'm assuming (maybe incorrectly) the setup i have purchased is useable in a marine scenario? The tank comes with the basic setup (axis one cf1000 external filter, 200 watt heater, 2x25W lights). I would love to do the full marine reef setup but i understand there's quite a big jump in costs associated with halide lighting etc which may be too big a jump straight off. I do wonder if i start off with a FO tank whether i could later add corals etc to make it a reef tank if i decide to go that way Sorry for the long first post but if someone can let me know if a FO marine or FOWLR is possible with this setup or whether i am better off sticking to a tropical setup that would be great. cheers
