  1. heres quite a good photo of dropsy in goldfish from a friend of mine who's fish got sick and died ;(
  2. no worries, hes a much happier fish now. prior to the finrot he reakkt didn't eat for around 1 1/2 months, but now hes social, hungry and his fins have completely regrown
  3. ever tried one of the water changers that connect to your tap? i empty my tanks by bucket but refill by one of those hoses that connect to your taps. Means i can sit down watch tv while it fills
  4. hope you don't have to use a bucket to refill it!

i would probably treat earlier rather than later if they're flashing. i've treated my discus tank with it before with no adverse reactions, i don't have clown loaches but have sterbai corys and had no adverse reactions from any of the fish
  6. Wow! stunning guys. Love the colour on those blue rams!
  7. i' no expert but i'd go 4, i have a 300L tank with 5 adult discus, 4 SAEs, 2 dwarf gouramis, 20 neons/cardinals, 4 sterbai and 2 BN. Just thinned this down from having half a dozen barbs (which weren't suited) and an additional golden male gourami and i think its a lot better
  8. i've been checking the tank each time i get home, was 28 degrees today, i'm off to buy a little fan to clip on to the tank this weekend so i can switch it on while i'm at work.
  9. are you only having discus or, other fish as well? and are they adults or juveniles? Is it planted or bare bottom?
  10. you can either use a snail trap, or try putting a piece of lettuce in the tank overnight and in the morning you'll 'hopefully' find most of them collected on the leaf. you can test the hardness of your water with a dKH kit, Chch water is usually pretty soft.
  11. ahh ok, thanks for the heads up i tried buying some stuff of tel but unfortunately he wasn't keen to ship
  12. ok so 250s be better or would i need to go 400s?
  13. if you have a floating hatchery you could float him in this temporarily or, even if you don't you could probably make one out of an icecream container with a few holes drilled in it. at least this would separate him till you find a new home for him.
  14. hey guys looking for some advice on metal halides. Currently im running a juwel 400L aquarium with 2x T5 and 2 x T8s. Dimensions of the tank are 151cm x 51cm x 62 cm. At the moment i only really have softies, a couple of small acros from cookie thinking long term i would like to go the metal halide route. I had been thinking of getting one of these http://www.aquaone.co.uk/marine_metal_halides.php in the 4ft version suspended as a pendant above the tank. Would this be suitable, what should i be looking for in terms of wattage etc. Would a 4ft pendant be acceptable on a 5ft tank? Also if you run MH bulbs can you put a perspex lid over the tank with some holes drilled to allowed heat dissipation etc? If possible id like to keep some sort of lid to prevent the possibility of jumpers getting out of the tank and also to reduce evaporation etc
  15. yeah thats what i did went and bought a new adaptor from the hardware store, works fine
  16. i have one lone male juvenile in the tank with my discus and they get on fine. I didn't actually intend to keep the guppy but when i bought my discus he accidentally got in the bag so he came along too
  17. how often are you doing waterchanges? and what size is the tank and what filtration do you have. The finrot and popeye both sound like a secondary bacterial infection possibly due to poor water quality? Taking out the carbon won't have caused the problem, carbon is used to absorb organics in the water, if you do decide to treat your whole tank (which like discus guru i wouldn't recommend, remove hte discus to a hospital tank) then you will need to keep the carbon out as otherwise the medication will be absorbed by it. Discus lie flat when stressed, so the fact that its lying flat doesn't mean that its past curing. good luck, try the furan-2
  18. beautiful pics luke, i have discus that looks almost identical to your red one which i thought was a red melon, is it a pigeon blood? or is that just the other fella in the pic?
  19. when i dosed flourish excel for blackbeard i only used the single dose (probably about 6 months ago) and it worked fine. Many ppl have recommended double dosing but i noticed on the bottle that its says something like 'don't overdose, or don't double dose'. I wonder if they changed the formula and now double dosing isn't required or even harmful?
  20. Hey kelsta, I mentioned about the possibility of flukes in your other thread but i agree with spidersweb and waiting until your ammonia and nitrite are zero and your tank cycled before medicating for flukes, if its not flukes then it will probably stress them
  21. yeah i agree smidey, i run a 300L tank with 5 adult discus which has the aqua one CF1200 and also an internal 1000Lph filter. I have found the aqua one really good and haven't had any problems, i also have a Via aqua 300 filter which is like an asian knockoff of the aqua one but its pretty crap.
  22. wow that potter angel is nice, how long have you had him davidb?
  23. yeah i know the methodology for killing them its the psychological problems i would have... small fish like neons i don't have the same attachemnt for as something like a discus etc
  24. External parasites that cause flashing are usually gill flukes, white spot treatment only treats the ich parasite not gill flukes with you would need to treat with something like praziquantel (which unfortunately isn't available from pet stores, however can sometimes be sourced from farm stores in the form of droncit). I had to deal with a case of gill flukes, where the fish flashed, became lethargic, eventually went of their food and had heavy breathing etc and i would lose a fish at a time over a couple of weeks. Usually stringy faeces is a sign of internal parasites not external and again requires a different med.. You mention above that the nitrite levels were high i would have thought that if it was nitrite poisoning you would experience several deaths all at once rather than one at a time. Don't get discouraged! i know what its like!
