  1. in my opinion melafix doesn't really seem to do anything and you would be better to isolate the gourami if possible and adminster a proper anti-fungal treatment
  2. i think it depends on how much far the damage goes. my discus that developed fin rot lost around 1cm of pectoral fin tissue and that has regrown no problems
  3. looks good matt, good to see the shrimp have got the idea mine also blow downwards
  4. if the worms are white free-swimming worms around 1 - 2 cms they are usually the result of over-feeding, and although harmless to your fish they may indicate you need to reduce the feedings. Once they run out of food they will die out. Not sure what the green things would be
  5. yes i've always wondered how that is possible?? some misleading advertising me thinks
  6. true, but if you have to use it you have to use it, i don't think i'd still have my discus with the finrot if it hadn't of been for the furan-2. The problem in nz is the limited amount of fish medication available over the counter
  7. 5ft tank, bulbs are 4ft long
  8. not sure what the requirements are but i'm currently running 2 x t8s and 2 X T5 and everything seems good but i should be getting metal halides instead soon
  9. thats exactly what i bought from the shed for $3 , makes a good difference
  10. or some lynx? bah chicka wah wah
  11. i'd say 10cm, its attached to plastic struts. i have a juwel tank so what i do is remove one of the flaps and position it so that it spans the gap between the flaps and points down towards the wate surface
  12. The PC fan cooling idea does make quite a difference in the heat fluctuations. My partner made me a fan for my tank using a 12volt power supply and a computer fan for $3 from the shed. i run the fan all day when i'm at work, today was pretty hot and when i got home at around 5 the temp was 25 degrees (prior to the fan it had reached 28 degrees on days that weren't so hot) so i definitely recommend getting your fan done asap
  13. lol, i can't take all the credit, my tank came with my pair of shrimps when i bought it so they may have already been accustomed to it. however, i have to say the first month or so that i had them they were more timid, however one day i tempted them out with a piece of mussel and ever since they've been very tame. Plus both them started cleaning my fish in the last month or so which i hadn't seen them do before. try some mussel, wave it around close to them and try and tempt them out with that, they'll get the msg
  14. speaking of hand feeding heres one of mine tucking in to dinner
  15. can't remember exactly maybe $15 or so?
  16. more water surface agitation means more oxygenation of the water
  17. you can buy the juwel aquarium sealant which is black. Anyone that stocks juwel aquariums should be able to get it for you. Here in chch i bought it from redwood aquatics.
  18. mines a spray bar at the top for my external filter, my internal filter also has the outlet at the top. i don't think they seem to care either way, although sometimes i have seen one of my discus swim over the top of the spray bar intentionally so maybe he likes the feel of the flow
  19. I have used furan in the past for suspected septicemia (septicemia is thought to be caused by either a gram-negative or gram-positive bacteria) and furan 2 is supposed to treat both forms of bacterial infection
  20. prazi is safe and gentle it shouldn't harm your filter or your fish
  21. Heya TGWH I would wait until its completely cleared before putting back in the tank, when you put him back in the tank he may take a bit of bullying from your other discus as they re-establish the heirachy (something that my discus are going through at the moment after being transferred back from my hospital tank) so you want him to be fully fit to cope with that. With your hospital tank are you using a cycled filter or doing daily water changes? In terms of how long it will take, it could be quick or it could b a while . I had a red melon that developed aggressive finrot, i isolated him and treated for around 2 weeks until his fins regrew. At the same time i also had a cobalt blue that developed a wound in his abdomen on September 17th, I transferred him out of the hospital tank last weekend.. so thats almost 2 months in isolation. Even now the wound is not completely healed over, but it is healed enough that he seems fine and has been fine back in the main tank
  22. how long are you going away for, are you referring to a saltwater tank or a freshwater tank? If its only a couple of days then plants would be ok, if its longer then they may start to suffer. If its a saltwater tank someone else might be able to tell you how long corals would be ok without light. with the heat issue you could do what i did and buy a cheap fan and connect it to a powersupply so that it disturbs the water surface and disperses heat a bit better
