  1. Does anyone have any suggestions for making the skimmer pump quiet. I have an Octopus NW-150 in sump skimmer and the pump for it produces a low hum (not due to vibration). I don't notice it too much but its going to drive my partner up the wall.
  2. Update Red melon seems to be fully healed and eager to break out of his small prison so will transferring him back to the main tank this weekend. Ive added mosquito larvae to his diet which he absolutely loves. The transparent edge of his fins in the photo below are the new growth, can anyone tell me if the colour will return to the fin edges? Still not sure on the blue turq, hole is taking a long time to heal, he seems better some days a bit listless other days, and his appetite is still not back to where it was before he got sick, heres a pic of the hole.
  3. just as well you said i didn't think of that or though the other half probably would of
  4. ok thanks good to know for the future
  5. OK ta (sorry to hijack your thread conch), just one more thing, you mentioned whitespot can occur at higher temps on a stressed fish. Is the marine form of whitespot not susceptible to high temps like the freshwater variety?
  6. Thats great advice wasp i will look at doing that. What are you using to get the fan to switch on at a certain temp? I'm running built in hood lights so there wont be much room between the water surface and the hood.
  7. my tank got up to 27.9 degrees the other day before i realised, i try to keep the tank at 25 degrees but im wondering whats going to happen over summer. Whats the upper safe limit for a reef tank?
  8. those midges  i hate walking through the reerve and getting a mouthful of midges!
  9. ok thanks guys , looks like theyll be eating larvae this summer
  10. ahh good to know caryl, i take it you've never had any problems with disease etc through feeding them?
  11. went out to the reserve today but wasn't too keen on the look of the water, looked liked there had been some sort of oil contamination. Came home and was weeding the garden when i noticed i had a bucket full of water next to the house over winter. Had a look in and scooped out probably a hundred larvae or so. the discus loved them! i've never seen my red melon so excited about food. Should i keep them as a treat or can they be a regular food?
  12. lol , i was wondering if i should do anything to them apart from a good wash? just in case theres any sort of contamination in the waterl
  13. I bought some frozen mosquito larvae today to feed to my discus as an alternative to bloodworms. They really seemed to love them so i was wondering if the nutritional content of these would be higher than frozen bloodworms. Should i feed these only as treat or can i feed them more regularly? Also i live next to a reserve which has pools with mosquito larvae, i was thinking about catching a hole lot, however i'm not sure how safe this would be with parasites, bacteria etc? One thought i had was to freeze ice cubes full of mosquito larvae, would this take care of the risk of bacteria/parasites?
  14. Some updates, Red melon is looking good with new tissue growing at the margins of the fins. He also appears to behaving 'normally'. When i got him a couple of months ago he was always quite lethargic and almost seemed stupid (sounds kind of weird but i would always see him looking at his reflection in the glass, tilting sideways and lacked interest in food, except for the odd bloodworm which he would peck at). The last two days he has accepted eating tetrabits for the first time ever and has been eating bloodworms with a real enthusiasm. He also has stopped spitting his food, he used to always do this, and the last two days he hasn't spat out any of his food. Also he used to have a hole in the base of his ventral fin, i assumed it was a scar and would never regrow, however it has now healed over The blue turq is also showing improvment, his hole i think is shrinking, his behaviour is back to normal, excited to see me and his food. However he is still spitting his food even though he seems excited about it. He grabs it chews it spits it out, grabs it again etc ( he never used to do this). I treated them both for metro for 6 days and furan for around 8 days with 50% water changes daily. Now they both on just daily water changes. The tank with the turq in it had a sponge filter and airstone but the water was a bit slimeyish so now it has a 700lph cannister filter running on it (tank is only 30L ). Red melon Turq
  15. yeah both discus are looking better
  16. i recognise that fin rot picture  off topic but hes looking much better i'll post an update pic tonight

  20. some new additions thanks to cookie extreme, still battling some aiptasia and cyano though Can't remember the name of this one, can someone enlighten me? Xenia Leather Acro frag on right Hammer, frogspawn and clown Anenomes have started hosting the clowns :bounce: and they've become very protective of it, tried to feed the anenome yesterday and got several sharp nips from the clowns. I've also had to move the feather duster twice as they've taken a disliking to it and have started headbutting it.
  21. yip thats normal my freshwater kit always has clear ammonia sample, the saltwater is always cloudy, salt water must cause it to precipitate out
  22. i'm definitely no expert but sunken stomachs would also make me think an internal parasite. Also the fact that they are dropping one by one makes me think internal parasites being passed from one fish to another over time. Like jn said i have found prazi to be useless for internal parasites but good for externals.
  23. What colour are their faeces? are they hiding or scratching? are they still eating normally?
