  1. Congrats on the fry. You will always find varying opinions on breeding on the net. I find it best to read the lot, take the common view points and work on the rest by experimenting. There is no right or wrong way, just a lot of different ways. Find the one that works the best for you
  2. I am pretty sure there are Fluval Edge here in Aucks and will try to remember to check today. I love the chi and intend as soon as we shift, to get one to put some cardinals in and maybe a betta.
  3. What sized tank and what filter are you running? How well are your plants growing?
  4. Algal problems are most acute in new tanks, where the balance between fish, plants, filtration and fishkeeper has yet to be established. 8 hours a day is a lot of light for a tank that is fairly newly set up. How many plants are in there? Kept up water changes and I wold cut back on how much you are feeding. With regards to your fish deaths I would suspect pH swings to be a contributing factor. It's better not to mess with pH. Most fish can adapt as long as the pH is stable.
  5. A total black out of your tank will also get rid of the algae. A Uv sterilizer is the more expensive option and will kill of anything passing through it.

  7. Depending on what the product is, things like stresszyme and cycle assist by seeding the tank with some beneficial bacteria which aid the cycling process. There are some products around that do more than others. Thereis a really good article on cycling your tank, written by Jennifer, available in the Articles, technical section, of this forum.

    Prazi

HFF Mt Roskill has liquid praziquantel available. Easier to mix in than the tablet form.
  9. If you let me know who you are other than Stimpy, I will see if the club has capitated you. NZKA did not supply the fish room names of their members.
  10. There will be no meeting this month. For the October meeting we would ask that all financial club members and anyone considering joining the club attend. Please keep Tuesday 9th October 7.30pm free. The direction and continuation of the AFA as a club with regular meetings needs to be discussed. Thanks Adrienne Dodge AFA Secretary
  11. Definitely Plakat - plakat referring to the fact that it has a short tail.
  12. I would cut your losses and pay him the $75, give him his clamps and get your lids. You can tell him you are not happy with his job and unfortunately will not be recommending his services to anyone else.
  13. It looks great. Dont worry about the tiger plecs, they wont do any damage or at least mine did not. With your plants just ensure that the ones at the lower levels of the tank are the ones that prefer low light. Your T5HO will not penetrate through 60cm of water but sufficient light will get through for low light plants to thrive.
  14. Hmmm - tempting to come and have a look. I have to come down and pop some stuff that came up here after conference back in the show container where it was supposed to have been put in the first place so might combine that with a looksie at your fish! Will wait till nearer the time as last time I didnt really like driving all the way back here in pea soup fog!
  15. Where are the clamps & why are they there? Your words not his please as I cant see how he would need to clamp the tank itself to keep it together. I am assuming the clamp is just to get the new support to adhere to the top of the tank properly.

    Betta Cancer?

While betta like warm air, it is hatching fry developing their ventrals that are dependent on it. Not having a lid is very unlikely to be the cause. What I am interested in though, is that my betta came from Hamilton. How long has yours been like this?
  18. I dont know if there is any chance that this is a feasible idea but seeing as you will own the house - could you put your sump etc outside the house therefore reducing the chance of flooding if something happens? With regards to a lid, isnt the whole idea that the wood sticks up above the rim of the tank because there is no lid?
  19. ummm living in Christchurch it would be very wise to err on the side of caution and consider 15mm.

    Betta Cancer?

can you post a pic. One of my males has two growths, one on each side which I am assuming are tumours. They started off just as patches of no colour at all when he became old enough to develop colouring. Now he has coloured and they are raised with coloured scaling on the top of them. One of them looks a bit like a cauliflower head. He is in no way held back by the lumps but I dont want to breed from him (shame as he is the best male) as I wonder if they would pop.
  21. True, they are so badly worded it is unbelievable. I had one this morning, only 2 lines but no way in the world should you believe its true.
  22. lol - I have been receiving mass spam emails of varying nature, all offering me money, since I returned from overseas in July. 90+ percent of them originate from Africa and having spent 5 weeks over there during my time away, I figure my email address is well and truely fixed within their systems.
  23. I havent seen any hongsloi up here since the couple I sent to Jen middish last year - after she lost hers in the quake. Unfortunately they turned out to be the same sex. Given that they are a fish I am very interested in I am sure I would have noticed had they been in any of the stores I have visited recently.
