  3. CF1000 will be fine - after all thats double what you have had for filtration. Just rinse off the media in the new filter and give the sponges a good clean up. If they are really past it, now would be the time to replace them before you set it up. With nitrates that high I am surprised you haven't had fish deaths. Your fish must be hardy! 30% water changes weekly are a good amount to change. For expiry date is there any sort of number on the bottle?
  4. and whats he doing wasting his time watching what you are up to? I waste most of my time on skype sorting fish stuff, especially atm.
  5. Well when you've finished the allnighter would you please reply to the email I sent you on Monday. Ah, the youth of today - away on holidays with assignments to be completed :rolfl:
  6. I think this is stress related. Instead of the life your dog has been used to where he could run free he is now cooped up. He could be biting because he is bored. Do you not have someone who could look after him for you?
  7. Now have you read the link I gave you the other week to read about mountain minnows?
  8. Periodically one of my ember tetra will do exactly as you are describing - no idea why though.
  9. Registration for conference has now closed. If anyone wishes to put in a late registration please contact me [email protected] to ensure you can be catered for on the Saturday night and on the Sunday during the day and evening. Anyone can attend the AGM as an observer but if you want to be catered for food and drink wise it would pay to let me know as well. For those of you who have registered and whom I do not know, I look forward to meeting you. Heres to a great weekend! Adrienne
  10. that will be fine, just make it as dense (thick) as you can. Minnows are very good at swimming through any loose stuff.
  11. Have you put lots and lots of moss in the tank? If you want any fertilised eggs to survive and fry to survive you will need a really thick mat or area of moss otherwise the adults will eat them. You are unlikely to see the actual eggs drop, its more likely to happen when no one is watching.
  12. To be honest I don't know. Google is not helping me much either. Flatfish, Rabbit, KrazyGeoff, Jamos, Kiwiplymouth, from this forum, might be more help than me. Try sending a pm to them. There are others who have good knowledge about plecs as well but these are the ones I know better.
  13. Blue is more commonly used in marine tanks for corals - this will be making your tank look washed out. Depending on your budget I would suggest you change at least one to a tropical (pink bulb). When you can, get rid of the blue and you should be amazed at the difference.
  14. what colour are your bulbs - are they white, blue, pink?
  15. The only difficulty I had with mine was getting them to eat, I do realise that in that they are similar to ottocinclus (who really only eat brown algae and seaweed). The pit bulls at the LFS seem very healthy though and do eat dried foods.
  16. No, they are not hard to keep but to be honesthe substrate as a camouflage. I have found it took a while to get mine to eat algae wafers but they now seem to disappear overnight. I have them in a species only tank with plants, rocks, driftwood, trying to encourage them to breed. Compared to fancy plecs these are very plain. To be honest, if you are after something that will be seen in your tank but you don't want a bristle nose - you can get stunning looking long fin bn these days - although you still want something relatively small that will show itself in your tank you might be better going for the big band tiger plec. These tend not to hide as much but be 'out there' more. heres a link with a pic on this site viewtopic.php?f=23&t=44040. I don't know how big they get but I believe they are one of the smaller plecs.
  17. Ouch - that hurt, some people are not very nice!! I gave the maximum amount of information I could based on the information given which was all I could do working off an ipad. I am not a plec expert nor do I claim to be however I supplied a link which would show the poster which plecs were allowed in the country and that is better than nothing imo. The pitbull plec is a neat little plec, I have three of my own - 1 male and 2 females however no luck in spawning as yet.
  18. Here's my list of suggestions - Your filter is not big enough for your tank so that will not be helping keep your algae down. A tank that size with cichlids in could easily handle an fx5 and your water quality would improve heaps. Have two sets of rocks and swap them around at water changes or take them out and scrub them. I find standing on a ladder helps me reach the back of the big tall tanks. A uv steriliser will only work if the algae is in the water and passes through the sleeve. It will do nothing to the algae already on rocks etc. White sand - do you mean the silica sand or beach sand? What colour bulbs are you running in your lights? Certain colours bring out fish colours more. For that depth tank you will need at least high output bulbs to penetrate to the bottom of the tank.
  19. I dont have that particular anubias, only anubias petite, anubias petite nana and anubias barterii. My petite is the one that has put up stems like yours (flowers or seeds) and is again at the moment.
  20. and for those among us who had/have parents who fought for another country and survived we consider ourselves very lucky. Today is the first ANZAC day since my father passed away. He did not fight for New Zealand but for Britain, even so I find myself appreciating more than ever the debt we owe those who went out and fought for our freedom.
