  1. Alan, I also never worked out what it was but when I was breeding I had 50 mature males appear to catch it off a single male within 2 days of my first seeing it. Some fighters come in to the retail shops with it as well. I had in fact wondered if it was some sort of burn mark from something in the water combined with the fact that fighters like to hang at the top of the tank where the lights are. However my fish only had it around their head region but from these photos it appears it is over the body. In all my years of working with them I have never ever had an issue with melafix, in fact it has worked wonderfully well.
  2. I never did work out what it was but any other fighters sharing that water will catch it.
  3. For those of you who do not know another massive earthquake has struck the upper south and lower north island areas. If you need assistance or know of people needing assistance with their fish or whatever please post on here and we will do our best to get you the necessary help. We sincerely hope every one is okay. 5. There is a reason power heads are supposed to be submerged. Seriously, if you have not kept the tank filled right up you will have most likely burnt something out. HFF have replacements for all the Aqua One Powerheads. Unless you can find a second hand one from broken tank its likely that any other for sale is going to be faulty.
  6. Believe it or not they tolerate salt quite well but don't tolerate high temps - over 25, ammonia, nitrite or nitrate. I once had guppies get severe ammonia poisoning, and I do mean severe. They were mine, but not in my tank and their skin peeled - thats what looks like is happening here or maybe it is lice?
  7. nitrate - not nitrite Panda cory are the most fragile of the corydoras. Very susceptible to nitrate. If your nitrate is zero but you have slight ammonia it would indicate that possibly your tank is going through a mini cycle. Best to get rid of the ammonia as it will burn the skin. The other thing is that a higher temp will be speeding up the progress of what ever it is as cory like less than 25 and that is placing more stress on them.
  8. Do you have a kh or gh test kit and how hot is your tank? These are panda cory? Are you dosing excel or anything else in our tank? Is this a newly set up tank as nitrate are rarely at zero in an established one?
  9. It doesn' look like any columnaris I have ever seen. What are the readings for pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate?
  10. Welcome. Those ecotanks are nice tanks I don't know if you can get LED lighting in a different colour to fit them though. Generally blue light is more used in marine tanks to simulate moonlight. Pink lighting brings out the colours much better. I am not sure if you know this already but your tank will be too small to accommodate both the angelfish and the gouramis when they grow. Both sorts of fish can to the 14cm+ mark - the angels in height, the gourami in length. Driftwood from the beach is usually safe as long as it is a hardwood but stay away from pine that has washed down the rivers. With the rocks they should also be okay as long as they are not limestone which will raise your pH too high. A good rinse with a hose for the wood and scrub of the rocks will clean them. Loaches will enjoy smaller substrate.
  11. I have four of our experienced cichlid keepers looking at these. Thank you so much for your willingness to assist
  12. to do that requires a meeting and a vote. NB the 'club' has paid its year book levy
  13. I am looking for the assistance of an experienced Malawi keeper whom I need to ID some Malawi photos taken in Europe, most likely France. There are around 12 photos. These have been sourced for future issues of our Magazine but as is the norm, a lot of photographers cannot identify the fish in the photos they take. If you are able to help please email me and I will send you a drop box link. If you ca not ID some of them then that is also okay but you must be prepared to tell me Thanks for your help

  15. This is great! I do wish you were a FNZAS member and could register this breeding. That way, if otos were banned from being imported we would have the necessary documented evidence years down the track.
  16. just watch that the pH doesn't drastically swing the other way with the CO2 being turned off.
  17. How the plants grow will depend on how strong your lighting is. For groundcover plants in a tank that high you really want T5HO lighting which is taking you out of low tech. Dwarf saggitaria might grow okay as would saggitaria microfolia if you can find some. Stem plants, which is most likely what you have, will 'reach' i.e. 'stretch' to get the light they need hence no or little bushing. Trim some back and replant. You could also use anbias, java fern etc if you have either drfitwood or rocks to tie it to.
  18. When I has them they laid throughout the java moss  They will happily eat their own eggs. Cory eggs will hatch even when quite badly fungused looking. Well done!
  19. No problems, when you set a date, time and venue just ask the secretary to flick me an email if you want it placed on the home page as well.
  20. I snip the tips of my val off once it reaches 70 odd cm and have no issues. As Sophia said it propagates by putting out runners.
  21. could be part of it - chch water is very pure (underground aqueducts) and very cold. Not normally the ick chemically treated stuff other areas contend with.
  22. Thanks everyone  At home now Water changes will be weeks away though, just as well I have good filtration.
