  1. I agree - have 20+ kilos of it to start washing today for my new tank.
  2. the higher it is in the tank the noisier it is. it doesn't need to be bubbling really fast, there should be a break in the bubbles rather than a constant stream.
  3. my female is pretty stroppy when the eggs get to about 3 days, won't let the male near but they don't seem to spawn when other fish are in tank. if problems I'll move the kribs out.
  4. the smallest I've kept one in was 18 litres, one of those tanks with the powerhead in the tank and a trickle filter in the lid, he was happy enough in the tank but the water movement he didn't like. smaller tanks = more water changes and vacuuming but they are lovely fish.
  5. Merry Christmas everyone - won't be able to say it to you tomorrow as having to fly to ChCh and back for a funeral. If you're driving take care, have a great holiday if you are going away and if you are around and on the forum I'll still be checking in!
  6. absolutely against - my hairdresser died last year after mixing party pills and alcohol. had done it before but this time it killed him. my daughters friend - aged 16 - was at a party last night where they were available and ended up at the hospital where a friend of hers was taken after using party pills. surely you can have a good time without them and if you can't go somewhere else with better company!
  7. there was a fault that came with a batch of cf1200 in that there was a small split in one of the attachments causing air to get in. all three of my 1200s had it and replacement parts were given without question. if its not a split get a total replacement under warranty as Caryl said
  8. 80 litres is about the size of the one that came with my tank I think - can't be bothered going and measuring , its too hot today.
  9. I have googled it and looked but haven't found a set up that I can see how it goes that looks remotely like the one I have. I think that theres some bits missing and thats why,
  10. Am I correct in thinking that the overflow on a tank acts as the intake for a sump.
  11. AW, you were spot on with what the powerheads etc are in that photo. The one on the right is a maxi jet 100, the middle an Eden 208 (swivels all over the place so must be a wave maker), and the left is a rio which must have clipped onto the top lip of the tank. The box is a Tunze, I looked it up on the site and am pleased to find all the parts are there. Now just to sort out how the sump works, I don't think all the attachments are there as they don't seem to fit but its possible I'm putting them in the wrong place. Then I'll decide if I'm going sump or cannister. Would like to stick with a sump if possible as the tank will look neater. Its not leaking Most of the white specs have come off everything, still working on a few stubborn ones :-? It looks great so far and will look better as soon as I put another layer of varnish on the cabinet. Thankyou to everyone for all your advice and help Keep it coming, I'm sure going to need it.
  12. I agree totally - I have just had a carcinoma removed from just above my eyebrow, had no idea what it was, just thought it was dry skin. My husband had two removed earlier this year as well and didn't realise what they were either.
  13. heres some better shots of the sump Cleaned the inside of the tank today & just about everything came off the glass. Have filled it to check its not leaking. Will leave it for a few days to be sure. Looks great so far.
  14. I've posted under technical the pics etc of the new (secondhand) tank I've purchased. Have a look and let me know what you think.
  15. Whats peoples opinions on sumps in a planted freshwater tank. Heard today that its not the best idea and an external filter might be a better option. 450 litre tank with most likely discus etc as per some of my other posts. Will have rocks and plants in it for variety.
  16. thanks for all the help so far I'll post some better pics of the sump this afternoon.

    Discus & ?

    ryanjury i have pmd you.

    Discus & ?

I was told that the way to keep the rams alive was to do at least a 30% water change weekly as they like clean water - like discus.
  19. whats a pre filter for? how do I block off the other part? Sorry to sound so thick but I have no idea. Have only had internal and external filters before but don't want to do it this time when the sump is an option.

    Discus & ?

I've got a pair of mature adult kribs already (and some of their many many young) in a tank with a pair of young rams that I purchased last weekend. So far so good but I do know they can be hard to raise. The breeder I purchased them off has heaps and they are beautiful, The mother krib is really stroppy when she lays so I'll see how it goes. I may have to take her out and let the eggs be eaten.
  21. thanks a heap, yes hopefully someone local may come to my rescue on this one. I need to clean the tank first as has quite a bit of sand in it and salt crusting over the glass. Am also going to revarnish the cabinet.
  22. heres a pic of the end and back of the sump that has the piping
  23. are all three of those power heads. thats not what I need though to get the flow going is it? I need a pump as well - is this correct?
  24. No hole, the thing in photo 3 is what is in the back left hand corner. There are no holes drilled in the tank. The lid has moon lighting (leds) attached and has enough space for this thing to sit in the back left hand corner. The lid does not have a top, is open
