  1. Siamese platy fry 'conjoined platys' - like siamese twins but fish! I think there may be some confusion as to a new breed of platy
  2. she will flare at him, if she is not in the same tank as him it will be time to put them together. once she stops being scared, she will flare and then she will start to follow him.
  3. my sons just turning 20 so not too far out
  4. I don't know if this is common but one of my current female guppies gets huge, drops some fry and then two weeks later drops the rest of them. We then have a four week break and its repeated
  5. if like guppies they can go on for a couple of days - dropping fry is hard work, may take a couple of days till shes full of vigour again
  6. Yes I'll go you halves in a bottle - as long as its not the stuff for marines
  7. I found this on the web http://www.barrreport.com/general-plant ... e-nh4.html The active ingredient in excel is polycycloglutaracetal, which is patented by Seachem. Polycycloglutaracetal is derived from glutaraldehyde, which is toxic and commonly used to sterilize medical equipment. According to Seachem, polycycloglutaracetal's molecular makeup contains a 5 carbon chain (glutaraldehyde is C5H8O2) which is accessible to plants.
  8. Maybe when you mix it with the rest of the chemicals or whatever in flourish excell it neutralises the toxic effects of it. Whos got a bottle of flourish excell and what does the label say as far as ingredients go or does the label not say much. IME the labels generally don't give a lot away in the percentages/breakdown of the amounts they use probably to stop people like me having them made up.
  9. You are correct Naz - this is the stuff you refer to. My husband is a chemistry teacher - has no idea where to get this stuff, its not a chemical that is around for general use and it sounds like its just as well.
  10. Think of it as a positive (and take it from me) they are a lot easier to raise when there are less of them As my husband is always telling me - its natures way - only the strongest will survive.
  11. You may have to isolate both - the cardinal until the damage heals and the female fighter as well. You could try removing the fighter for a few days or containing her within the tank and when she is released she may behave better.
  12. You'll always get a couple that will be way bigger than the others, usually males. the rest will grow. I have some about the same age, range from 3cm down to about 6mm. Some stirring up trouble and have been seperated, others quite happy to be mixing. How many have you ended up with.
  13. I am currently using Flourish but not flourish excel. I have bristlenose, corys and rams in the tank currently and will be adding discus - wasn't sure how they would go with the excel.

    plecs.???

Hey Catbrat, I don't know if I allowed to ask on this but where do you work. I'd love to have a look, whenever I look at plecos in the shops I never know if they are indeed what they are supposed to be.
  15. Please keep your answers simple  I'm looking at using a CO2 system with my new tank. Firstly, if it has a sump as well as an external cannister is it worth while or not? :-? Secondly, the more I read about systems and look the more confused I get about what I need. Can you buy a complete system or do you have to get it as separate parts? If its seperate parts what exactly do I need? Thanks as always
  16. Alan I suppose sometimes people get a couple of 'breeding pairs' and don't want one of them.
  17. No - I'm totally confused, have no idea how to work out my lighting - what I have oOR what I need
  18. My perspective only When I see 'breeding pair' advertised I always wonder if in fact any fry hatched or if in fact theres just a male and female. Not much point in having eggs if they aren't fertile. The other one is 'pair of fish' - two males make up a pair, a pair should be a male and a female of the same species.
  19. and if you still have a problem do what I do, line the picture up and ... duck!
  20. I'm not going to alter it. The tanks really being set up for the discus I'm getting (from discusguru). A couple of my gold rams have died in the last week and I had been told that they like the same pH as discus and 7.6 I thought was a bit high. I had tested it on Monday and it was 7 - mind you yesterdays test was done with a new test kit. However the remaining 6 rams seem fine at the moment so may have had nothing to do with it. And the best of all - apparently as long as its stable the discus will be fine too when I get them.
  21. The trouble is that when you're in a shop with lots of water the already 100% or close humidity like we're having seems even worse. I've been back at work the last week and have had to keep stopping and mopping my face its been so hot. We've been here 10 years and its the humidity I can't cope with, give me hot thats fine.
  22. I've spent the morning cleaning the box we live in, putting rubbish into boxes and now I'm about to sort out the box we're sending the rams to chch in! Oh and boxing my kids ears for messing the house up again
  23. steve, just wait till you get the new setup running then you'll probably run too
