  1. Sure they are male and female? Don't know a lot about discus but isn't 30 degrees a bit on the high side?
  2. I always put mine in janola/bleach for a few hours and then rinse well and leave in the sun to dry. Do it with everything I use on regular basis with absolutely no problems at all.
  3. I think it depends sometimes on the quality of water in the shops tanks, and how quarantine went as well for imports. Different fish are susceptible to different things, imported guppies can carry disease that they are immune to but if you put them in a tank with locally bred guppies, the locally bred ones may die. Dwarf gourami seem to have problems. Clown loaches get white spot easily. Imported fighters tend to be a reasonable age when we get them here. Some fish simply live longer than others. The list goes on..
  4. This is really embarassing    I forgot the show was on last weekend - my husband said to me on Sunday afternoon 'I wondered why you didn't go!" Is there anyway (or anyone) I can purchase a program off so I can see who entered what? Happy to pay post etc. Thanks
  5. They are looking amazing, congratulations on such beautiful young fish.

    Common plec

Yes saw a couple of whoppers at hff the other day.
  7. I thought hook worms had a distinct hook at the end like a barb, they don't look like them IMO
  8. How easy or hard is it to get a marine tank started? I'm thinking small, a tank for my husband to look at, but what are the essential basics at the beginning and where does one get everything? Also what size small would be the best?

    Common plec

Thanks, I thought that a common plec and a bristlenose were the one and same but obviously not

    Common plec

What is a common plecostomus? What does it look like?
  11. Thanks, thats what I thought and when reading tm I didn't think what they said was quite right. I'll wait until I get my cichlid tank up and running in the new year.
  12. Can these fish be kept together. :-? I have Kribs and there are Brichardi on tm at the moment. The seller suggests they are okay with kribs and community fish but I thought they were too aggressive. Do want a few tank mates for the kribs though if poss.
  13. Hi, post this under the diseases section - it will get more hits and someone is bound to have some idea of whats happening.
  14. I had to take my male out as mum was attacking him. Took her out 10 days ago and still have 40+ fry. Once you take them out though you won't be able to put the adults back in until the young are larger enough not to be dinner
  15. have you seen the arowana listed just recently on tm $1800?
  16. My lights come on at 7am and go off about 10pm without problems.

    Microworms

I just use a double mix very similar to the way alanmin makes his up and put it in a chinese takeaways container (we have heaps - a very good chinese takeaway just up the road  )
  18. forgot to say I can send you down a mix if you want it. just pm me your address.
  19. Microworms are easier, just scrape them out with a tooth pick (or finger - wash it well after) and dip in the tank. Decapsulated brine shrimp can be purchased which apparently work well, or so others say.
  20. pm Ron - Discusguru He has heaps of discus and might be able to help

    Microworms

Mine only really smell when the microworms have multiplied so much there is no uneaten? mixture left over. I don't keep them in the house though, they are out the back room with my fish.

    Microworms

I use rolled oats, yeast, marmite/vegemite and sugar.
  23. I'm in central auckland and depending on where you meet 'out west', you may be the easiest club for me to get to (timewise anyway).
  24. Great, thanks The tanks are spotless, they are barebottom, no algae or anthing else and the water is as clear as.
  25. I currently have two four foot tanks pretty much surplus - 1 has a pair of kribs in it and the other has a single fighter and a couple of small catfish. Both tanks have external filters on them. Am intending to remove the existing occupants and put in a different species to the ones that I have had in these tanks. Do I just leave the existing water in the tanks and add the new fish given that the filters are cycled (making sure that I give the filters the chance to adjust to a heavier load) and that the water parameters are the same or Do I empty out the tank and just start again using the existing filters. This sounds silly I know but I don't want to kill any new additions.
