    help

IMO - may or may not help The grey peeling look is normally caused by ammonia and a sudden spike is the most likely to cause problems. By the time you tested it the spike may have been coming down. My aquariums pH levels drop the longer the tank has been set up and its only regular water changes that keep my big tank at 6. Water here comes in at 7.4. Did you add salt to the tank the plec was in. I am not certain from what you have said. If so my understanding is that they are sensitive to salt. Otherwise the ammonia is most likely to have been the cause even though it wasn't obvious at the time. Sorry to hear about the losses.
  2. I use the same nets unless I have new fish or am concerned about something in a tank. Then I use the net and afterwards sterilise it. I don't transfer water from one tank to another though.
  3. Come on elaborate on this one  "Some" other jars on top - don't you mean stacked like cans!!! I would have thought a great work out every day.
  4. When you say 'bottom jars' you need to explain to others what you mean  Ron told me what its like in your fish room. You both have beautiful fish. Well done
  5. pm'd with a contact name ph no. etc in auckland
  6. I might be wrong here but isn't one of the causes of white spot stress? If so I imagine the discus chasing the neons (mine never ever have!) will have caused the neons to get white spot, which in turn, they have passed onto the discus. I would also use salt in the first instance but for safetys sake I'd remove most of my plants first as I wouldn't want them dying.
  7. I had the aquis (aqua one?) 2200 on my 450 litre discus tank and it work well. I have moved it to the eel tank and now have the fx5 on the discus tank. The water flow rates not a problem and the tank is healthy. Water flow slows when the filter is clogging and I would imagine the quantity and type of media affects the flow rate anyway.
  8. very unusual looking - do you still have them?
  9. Ooohhhhh ............ imagine it, in a few years it will be 'uncle weece, uncle weece, fishies, fishies' how cute
  10. I have 'twisting' val - not a lot but you can have a few plants if you want. Not sure what type of twisted val it is. It doesn't particularly like the high flow in my tank and the fact that I dose flourish excel but it does tolerate it and grows slowly because of this. You can pick it up when you pick up the rocks

what type of fish do you have?

    blind fish

One of my male discus was attacked by another male about 4 weeks ago and looked like he was going to be permanently blind in one eye. He definitely couldn't see out of it. It took 3 weeks and his eye has cleared up and is fine. Persevere for a bit longer.
  13. I don't think you can see it and one minute is a bit of an exaggeration but it is within walking distance. Ask for directions at the airport. Theres plenty of buses/ shuttles that will take you into the city centre, cost around $40 I think for a shuttle, a bit more for a taxi.
  14. I pour boiling water over a lettuce leaf, leave it for a few days and then strain it out through a handkerchief. Seems to work okay.
  15. I find that if I drop any sort of sinking pellet for bn then the trumpet snails flock to it and I just scoop them out with a net. It doesn't get completely rid of them but certainly reduces the numbers right down.

    blind fish

doesn't look like pop eye - I enlarged the pic to have a look. Pop eye is when the whole eye sticks out on the side of the head. It could be due to water conditions so plenty of water changes may help.
  17. That would be a big ask - there are so many of them and they don't exactly come to the front of the tank and say 'here I am, shoot away'. Mr Plecs setup is great, each tank set up differently, no wonder they breed so well.
  18. Costs more to ship out of Auckland than elsewhere in the country but in saying that I may be slightly high with the price I gave you as I buy books of tickets and they work out at $12.50 approx each. Forgot to check when I was down there tonight dropping off fish. The part about liability is most important and both seller and buyer need to realise that. NZ Couriers has a sheet that they hand out for cash says which says that they don't pay attention to 'this way up' etc stickers but they seem to be pretty careful. Pickup in Auckland is only done in the morning which does mean your fish are packaged quite a bit longer than if you drop at the depot around 6.30pm in the evening.
  19. I use NZ Couriers - within the NI they charge $19.50 for cash sales. You will also need to purchase or obtain a polybox or a solid container, and a heat pack. I purchase courier tickets which are discounted at $12.50 each I think but even then by the time I purchase a polybox and heatpack it still adds up. The price depends on the size box you use also and the cheaper rate is normally for a box less than .25 cubic metres. Selling bulk fish makes it worth it and often I carry part of the cost myself for multiple purchases. Not hard to do, if you arrive at the counter with the fish boxed they will take it, I label mine clearly and never a problem. If you ring and ask will they take it the person on the end will usually say no.
  20. I only add it to my big display (discus) tank but do not add it to any of my fighter tanks - even the new fry tanks.
  21. Yes he did! Huge turnout - 1000 bikes. We were about 20 rows from the front at Karaka where the start was and after the ride was finished we parked up and walked to the top of the mound and counted another 650 bikes come in. Hubby says he saw Whetu's bike. There were only 2 Cagiva 650's on the ride. I never thought that there were so many big bikes in Auckland and it made ours look small. Anyway $12,000 was raised on the day. Great effort all round and a great time.
  22. Am considering getting some of this for the areas around the logs in my planted tank - its on Tm auction 206951605. Can a kind person tell me what it might be so I can research it first. Thanks.
  23. We have huge numbers normally but this year we cut the trees back and up off the ground, cleared away all leaves etc so the sun could get in and they have reduced heaps. Still reasonably bad after dark but we at least can sit outside until full darkness with the help of a few candles (citronella),
  24. Anyone else going apart from me & Whetu? Meet at Karaka at 8am tomorrow for a cruise up the motorway. Whetu - what does your bike look like? Ours is a red Cagiva Raptor 650 (I am the pillion) unless hubby won't get up in time and in that case I'll have to take my scooter I suppose.
  25. I didn't get down either but my son did. He said he was the other end of the track and saw the smoke. They showed it on tele this afternoon about 5pm/
