  1. I have sterbai in with my discus and they are happy and healthy at temps that have reached 32 degrees over summer although the norm is 29. Got them as babies 12 - 15 months ago and they are all still alive.
  2. I use it and dose 2-3 capfuls a day into my 450 litre discus tank. Wouldn't even double it though with the discus in there. I seem to have no problem with my val. I use it to control the black beard algae in the tank and I use fertiliser balls to get the plant growth. I buy a 2 litre container about twice a year. If the bba is well under control I reduce the dosage slightly for a week or so until its needed again.
  3. Very very nice. I like A-towns ones, I love wooden buildings.
  4. Mine nibble at it until they get bigger and lazier then they eat anything that is fed in the tank including the bloodworms. However have the SAE and flourish excel does seem to keep it in check although it never entirely disappears.
  5. Mmmmmmm! Interesting. Are these some of the spawn that was so tiny end of January. Might have to come looking again
  6. Just letting you know that the Siamese Algae eater is also known as the Blackline Flying Fox and seems to be called this at more fish shops up here than not.
  7. The lighter the female the harder the bars to see. I can never tell with my yellows but they seem to breed like rabbits anyway. I put three pairs in to breed last night, let the females out this morning, hopefully they will spawn early tomorrow. The males have nice nests but two pair are very young still (ct's) so we will see.
  8. You'll get a mix of blue and red babies and some blue with red wash in them. Tail type will be a mix also, some vt, some maybe like a good ct but the majority will be combtail or (I can't remember what its called) look scalloped edged. Unless the vt female has some crown in her and then more will throw some sort of crowning.
  9. Don't know what causes the ventral fins not to form. Some say its genetic, some say its the water conditions as fry. I had it happen once last year to 90% of my spawn, others have had it happen to a few. I don't know if they will be fertile. I didn't try with my ones although I have kept a couple of females and may give it a go.
  10. Unfortunately no they don't.
  11. My two females pair up with different males all the time and spawn in the community tank. The eggs only get to the stage where they start to detach though as the other fish eat them. They must be happy with the water conditions in my tank and as I said above I use tap water with the aqua plus added. They spawn every time I do a 50% water change.

I chuck mine in the bath for 2-3 days. It doesn't fit in a pot. Hot water makes it leech faster and turns the bath really brown. Just means we have to shower instead
  13. sorry - marble as in the shape of a marble - round.
  14. If he's not hurting her then leave her there. Can take 2-3 days. When she's full of eggs she will most probably look like a marble.
  15. How long was she in the tank with him before you released her. How old is she? Sounds pretty normal mating behaviour so far, I would say she's not ready yet to spawn.
  16. We have a generator We've had several power cuts in the last few weeks anyway and its kicked in about 3 times. Not raining yet and not really any wind at ground level but the tops of the big eucalyptus next door are moving around very strangely. Normally it rains when the sky looks like it does at the moment so we will see.
  17. You talking Australia? If so the boats you go out to the reef in have all the gear you'll need. Just take plenty of waterproof sunblock and a decent camera for all the pics you will be able to take.
  18. I run a 2213 on my 54 litre fighter tank. I use the spray bar and turn it to face the glass. Its not too much of a problem for my fighters and if you plant the tank out the disturbance will reduce further. Good tank mates are neons, cardinals, platties, bn. Angels, barbs, male guppies are not recommended but the ones I definitely would not put in the tank with them are the barbs. Leave a space for the male fighter to swim in when planting, mine like to be able to swim from end to end.
  19. My discus tanks sits at a pH of 6. I water change up to 30 - 50% every 2-3 days and use the water straight from the tap (heated) and put aqua plus into the tank. The water from the tap is pH7.8. My pH level change is virtually non existant after a water change.

    Hello

Welcome - check he isn't in your filter
  21. Yep exactly what happened. I rang Animates and they told me to bring it in. A very kind salesman opened up the motor and sure enough the impellor had a bit of sintered glass in it. He was so polite and good about it, I was really impressed. Cleaned it out and put it back together and its away working. I now have the sintered glass insides pantyhose to stop it ever happening again.
  22. I find that this time of the year Feb - March is when I have the greatest problems with algae -black beard and string (I think thats the one, long and bright green). I seem to be able to just keep them under control with flourish excel and a decent sort of current. I have heaps of driftwood in my tank but the only way I can control the black beard algae on that is to squirt the flourish excel directly on it.
  23. Well my new filter is not working. Did a clean out today, using the drain plug. Topped it back up, let it prime itself, turned it on and away it went for about 4 minutes. Then nothing. 3 hours later and several attempts - still nothing. I've had to put a cf1200 on the tank tonight using the media from the fx5. Guess its back to the shop with it tomorrow to see what they're going to do but it had better be fast. The cf doesn't filter enough to hold my tank for long!
