  1. What filter media do you use with the filter. The media collects the bacteria in the tank and if it is turned off the media goes 'bad' in plain english. When you turn it back on after a while the 'bad' muck is released back into the tank and can 'poison' the water. Note I said 'can' not 'will'. Therefore constant running of the filter is better. I use a large pipette 'pointy plastic tube with a squeeze bulb at the end' for sucking up left over muck in my fry tanks. You could use one of those between water changes.
  2. He will build another one, might sulk but no more than he will when you take him away from his precious babies  Water quality is the most important thing in getting them to breed. Leave the filter turned off rather than turn it on and off which is what will cause water quality problems. You might be able to - with a bit of fiddling run a sponge filter into the tank with an airline. Siamese fighters are air breathers but bn are not unless absolutely desperate. BN are also very messy so you should set yourself up a good water change/tank vacuum routine. Good luck.
  3. looks like a girl to me!
  4. If you can keep the second tank at a heat similar to the first one it would be okay. For one guppy get a 2 litre ice cream container,or something that floats and fill it with water from the existing tank and float it in the top of the tank. I add one gram of rock salt per litre of water and it works wonders. You can water change an icecream container every day with no probs and every time you add new water add another gram of salt per litre of new water until it heals up.
  5. Please put my apologies in Caryl. You never know - one day I may surprise you all and turn up!
  6. my sons got 2 sidecars and has just purchased a race bike which arrived today - it took my bike park in the shed!
  7. Anyone else off to watch the Battle of the Streets at Paeroa this weekend?
  8. If you go garden hose don't go for the cheap one. In 6 months with twice weekly water changes the inner of the hose I purchased detached from the outer and stuck together severely restricting the water flow - actually stopping it all together. This time spent more money and no kinks, no slowing of water flow.
  9. thats why mine has never flowered! I keep cutting it off
  10. I syphon mine out using the garden hose onto the garden and then refill it from the tap once again using the hose. I put the aqua plus water conditioner straight into the tank. What I do have to remember to do though, is keep checking to make sure the tank isn't overflowing.
  11. where are you doing your section & one day a week grad programme?
  12. Hi Zachyd, we used to have chickens too when we lived in Timaru. The trouble was we were in the town and the neighbours weren't too happy when the roosters crowed. At least you won't have that sort of problem.
  13. badmanstropicalfish.com but like everything else some of these will co-exist and appear happy. If only they could talk
  14. Yes, some were or are members of fnzas. I saw it last year and remember the comments on here about it.
  15. I am very tempted to have a go at breeding them but I don't have any spare tanks big enough atm. Also tripping overseas in a few months so it will have to wait. All this spawning won't be bad for her or will it? The trouble is that the white diamond is the dominant male in the tank and he's a right bully. The pigeon male is still hiding in the corner, his eye looks a little better although the pupil is still dilated and his eye is still cloudy looking. Water change day again today so this will help the healing process.
  16. a flower or a plant? I have some plantlets if you want a couple.
  17. My blue snakeskin and my pigeon spawned for the 3rd time within 10 days about 4 days ago. the eggs were once again very promptly eaten by the other discus in the tank. The second spawn made it to wriggler stage though so I was very impressed. The snakeskin female has since spawned again (yesterday) but this time the white diamond male in the tank chased the pigeon male away - he now has a very sore eye. The white diamond never fertilised the eggs just ate them as she deposited them. Its the second time he's done that (eaten them), the first time was a different female. Is this because he's not mature (don't know how old he is) or do some males just do this?
  18. answered aaron. Your guppies were lovely. The ammonia wasn't!!!
