  1. Do you have a test kit? If not just keep up regular water changes. You could check your filter to see that its not too gunked up with muck. Rinse it out in some water from the tank (not the tap) and maybe that will help as well. It may just be the increased number of fish in the tank. My bn is the fastest way I have of knowing something is up in my tank - he goes straight up and sticks his nose out. He's only done it twice - once last year when the ammonia spiked and hit 8 - due to a blocked filter and the other day when the temp hit 36 degrees celcius!
  2. Glad to hear they are still okay. Now you need to work out why the water was low in oxygen for them. Two reasons I can think of - tank temp ammonia too high.
  3. I can only echo Simian - increase the aeration. My bn only come up when theres a shortage of oxygen in the water.

    New Tank

Thanks - I get my inspiration by looking at others tanks and the way they are set out. As you can imagine there are a lot of tanks up here in Aucks and people are very good at letting me ask questions.

    New Tank

I like the way it looks now and yes, the discus are very very healthy. All eating well. Pretty stroppy though, even with the six of them. They love to fly across the tank and ram into each other. Size - they won't let me measure them but between 10 - 12cm, maybe slightly bigger.
  6. I was pleased that they presented the whole thing correctly and made it pretty clear that the risk was from disease that the fish may carry in without going through quarantine and what the water may have carried. I was worried that people were going to be led to believe that the fish themselves would kill other native fish. It is quite widely believed that fighters will fight with everything. Its also possible that there were bits of plant in the bag with the water and poo.

    New Tank

Thought it was time to post some more pics. Once again I have moved plants around and have finally managed to achieve a more 3D look to the tank. The original plants are pretty much still there albeit moved and a few new ones have been added. Plants - marble queen sword, val, osiris, windelov, dwarf sag and red pine. Filter - fx5 Fish - discus, rummynose, cardinals, hatchets, harlequins, bristlenose, tiger plec, king tiger plec and a chocolate zebra. heres a few pics
  8. Well I'm going to listen to what they say and then decide if its fair and reasonable but certainly the advertising for this leaves me in some doubt
  9. pm me tomorrow to remind me and I'll ring hollywoods and a couple of other places up here if you like.
  10. Yes I heard that - thats what got my attention. Absolute rubbish to those of us who keep these fish - they wouldn't have a hope of surviving in NZ waters. This is why I want to watch the programme as it sounded like they were about to say they were a banned import!
  11. I run a Fx5 on my 5ft 250 litre tank and it more than does the job. There are no problems with muck being left on the bottom of the tank even with it being planted. I used to run a sump and while it worked very well because the intake didn't siphon up properly and it relied on the overflow to work I had to vacuum a lot more to keep the bottom of the tank clear.
  12. Thats a good sized spawn and there will be heaps more than you think - ! normally find theres about 3x as many as I can count.
  13. Pretty sure these were the ones intercepted near my place - they were not mine!
  14. you need to use a host. I use photobucket. You can email them to me if you want and I'll post them. I'll pm you my email address.
  15. Border Patrol this week features the interception of Siamese Fighters in the mail for anyone interested.
  16. Happy Easter  :bounce: :bounce:
  17. Well that spawn came to nothing. Eggs but no fry hatched. I have found two fry - around two weeks old I would guess - from one of his previous spawnings - so he's not totally infertile, not sure whats going on. I'll try again in a couple of weeks. In the meantime one of my crowntails has turned platinum blue - at this stage no red at all on this fish so I'm delighted. Its a male and its crowning is still developing. He's a brother to the other ct's pictured at the top of this post. I have one white female and one sky blue female from this lot as well.
  18. Its a lot easier to use sea water to hatch brine shrimp. Would be worth the effort of going and collecting it in a large container. I collect 40 litres every couple of weeks. Hatch rate much better. Of course it may not be possible for you.
  19. Females will lay without a male present so you will know you have a pair when you have wrigglers. Good luck
  20. My original query about people saying what they had was so that if I saw one in the shop and I wasn't sure if the label was correct then I would know who to ask. In my wildest dreams I didn't think of people trying to take them although of recent times I have been very very careful to keep my own room well locked up. That was before I posted several questions about Id's and had very good answers and a lot of assistance. I love the ones I got off Mr Plec but as he said when I asked if I should buy a pair rather than single ones they would not breed in the conditions I was going to keep them in.
  21. No theres at least two younger than you at 8 & 10 years old. I'm not one of them
  22. Oh Mr Plec - do you mean that you have had your plecs taken? If so I am disgusted that anyone would do this.
