  1. welcome .... and for the cost of joining the FNZAS you get to go to the meetings, a beautiful magazine every 3? months with articles in it relevant to fish keeping in NZ and discounts at some of the fish shops throughout NZ. You also get to meet very nice people with a common interest and can form quite a network throughout the country meeting up as you travel about. There are tank crawls, bbq's, quiz nights etc.
  2. fantastic Brains and beauty :happy2:
  3. I'll try get some pics of some of my females this weekend. The two spawns hatched however heater problems as in temp dropped to 23 then rose to 32 have resulted in a reduced sized survival rate however I have another spawn from one of the males (the latest spawn I had a different male ate the eggs  ), which has hatched and at this stage looks to be a good number. The females are either green, blue or greeny blue with red and a couple of pink/purple girls as well which will match my other males.
  4. Hope so Josh - its been one hell of a week :an!gry He's putting it on his debit card. He does have access to his savings in a completely seperate account which he has for teachers college in 2011 and so far they have declined financial assistance from us or her parents in the way of our credit cards. They do know if they need funds we will bale them out. All I want is for them to now enjoy their next 6 weeks of holidays as the last 2 of the 3 weeks they have been away have been a bit rough for them. They are staying in Bangkok for another 3 days then heading south to a beach for a few more days, then northern thailand (Stephen has been before with us), and working their way back through to where they left off in Vietnam.
  5. Hanne has just been released from hospital. However Southern Cross is refusing to pay the costs as they reckon it may be a prior medical condition. Theres no way it was so it will be disputed! Stephen (my son) and Hanne phoned home in hysterics - the hospital bill came to 96,000 which they thought was American dollars however it does appear that its probably baht, which works out to $4,250. They still have the medivac flights to pay for as well. We are still sorting out how its going to be paid as the hospital has taken a copy of my sons debit card which has all his savings on it.
  6. tea coloured water is from the tannin in the driftwood. It will go away eventually
  7. As Ryan said, or are they all males and nibbling at each other? How long have you had them? How long has the tank been running for and are they the only fish?
  8. Well, she's still in hospital in Bangkok, still on IV fluids but says she's not as sore as she was. Its not her appendix, well its not showing up as inflammed in the scans she's had. Theres a conference in 24 hours between the insurance company and the medical teams to decide the next step. We're thinking that if they let her out it will have conditions with it like not leaving Bangkok for a while or maybe even that they have to return to NZ but not certain if they can risk letting her on a long distance flight.
  9. Yes, Southern Cross insurance and they organised the flights, hospitals and accommodation.
  10. the $1 reserve is a good way to find the market price. It also means that a lot more people are tempted to bid on the auction in the hope they may score a bargain but its when two people really want the item that the price often climbs above what it should do. Auto bid is a good way to go. You win some you lose some.
  11. My son (22) and his long term partner (21) of 5 years left NZ two weeks ago this morning to travel through Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand. After regular emails over the first days we had a phone call last Friday evening to say she had been hospitalised in Vietnam with a urinary infection and put on a drip. On Monday we had another short email to say they were moving on again. Until yesterday I had heard nothing and was starting to wonder if everything was okay. They say no news is good news - huh! don't believe that one anymore. Yesterday we had a phone call from my son to say they were being medivac by Southern Cross to the hospital in Bangkok as she is very sick with what they now think is appendicitis. A nurse travelled with them as she needed IV drips on the way (its about a 2hr flight). As I sit here at 4.18am in the morning, waiting to here the results of the scans etc she is currently undergoing I really want them back home!
  12. well... you see... I'm not very good at reseeding new cultures and it died off. The trouble is that I don't use it that much at all then when I think it would be good to have some on hand... Josh you are welcome to come visit any time.
  13. I does want some pllllleeeeaaaassseeee!!!
  14. Theres no reason that a teenager can't sleep in a fishroom!
  15. Hi John I know what you mean about variety. I've made it where I've wanted to be a couple of times in the last few years after many many months of work to then not be able to source unrelated fish which has meant I have had to pretty much start over. Breeding fighters is not like breeding guppies or some other species, it takes a lot more time and patience, and in the most cases space.
  16. me - no! Phoenix, I don't know about but he was talking about getting back into fighters. I've worked really hard over the past few years to develop various colour lines and tail types only to lose them I'm finding it seriously hard to source from others good fish of the tail type and colour I need to keep bringing new blood into the lines I do have. This year I am going to concentrate on the quality and not so much the quantity.
  17. Given that it may well be my last year of seriously breeding fighters I'm going to give it my all
  18. This coming year I hope you will see fighters of a quality never seen before in NZ come out of my fishroom There may not be as many but it will be worth it imo. I've just purchased another big (deep and wide) 4ft tank and stand giving me 5 x 4fts in the shed plus my others bringing my total of tanks to 19 if all are up
  19. I think they are. The top one is an OHM male and the lower one is a delta tail/hm cross but the hm side is not true. Hopefully the next generation will be better.
  20. A couple of pics of my young males whom I am hoping to spawn this week. I have a nice matching female for each of them but they are still very young so we will see.

Mine also lived 2-3 years at temperatures of up to 32 degrees but mostly around 28 degrees. The higher the temperature, the shorter the life cycle.

    Furan

This is not posted with the intent to poke at anyone (that I do promise) but some of these diseases will remain in the tank for a very very long time and while the original fish that have been sick will die, the remaining will carry the disease (even if it can't be detected) and infect others. I have seen (when I first started breeding) first hand how a tank of stunning quality fish can be wiped out and how long it took to get the tank cleaned out and sterilised so it could be reused. Had I been quicker at noticing, treating and then finally using furan I would have saved a lot of the beautiful fish I had at the time. My last furan cost me $27 - so yes it has gone up a bit in price. You can always isolate fish and treat them in a smaller tank saving $'s. Its a 4 day course of treatment. I'm not saying that furan is the only way to go because its not. But when all else fails it pays to give it a go.
