  1. I wouldn't go demasoni as they are cichlids and will require a much higher pH than the others will be happy in. They are also more aggressive. You could go for some corys (there are a lot of nice ones out there and in a range of sizes as well). SAE (Blackline flying foxes) will eat the algae as long as they are smaller but they do get big and lazy and then eat dried food rather than algae. Best way to go are some bottom dwellers, mid tank fish and fish for the upper levels. Platties are middle, gourami are mostly upper I think so its really the bottom level you need some for. SAE are every level depending on where the food is lol.
  2. If we have time to stop on Tuesday/Wednesday I'll throw some more in although we're not going past the best beaches for it. Just not sure if we will have passengers with us which might restrict the amount of space available.
  3. You should see how much driftwood I brought back from the east cape - as much as I could fit on the floor between the seats in the back. Theres no shortage of it on the coast!
  4. Yep, they are a good way of getting around When I have to go out of Auckland its time to get the 650 out and get my husband to take me. I have to admit though, that we used the car to go to Tauranga and beyond. We were going to hire a BMW bike but that was going to cost a bit too much. Mind you it would have been cheaper than the fish :happy2:
  5. I went shopping in the 7 weeks my Christmas holidays, drove all around Auckland and drove through to Tauranga (2x) and travelled the East Cape to Gisborne. Spent masses of $$$$'s and came home with a wee few fish from a selection of shops throughout the NI I'll post pics of the two I found today, in another week when they have settled
  6. :happy2: yay!!! :happy1: spawned and hatched :happy2: :happy1:
  7. it is pretty though but on this occasion we will give it a miss. Thanks everyone for your assistance.
  8. My husband said 'NICE!' he is a science teacher. He said any coke will do but diet coke does the best job lol.
  9. some people raise their bettas on bloodworms and keep them on them daily until they die. Me - no! I find an increased likelyhood of them developing dropsy if feed bloodworms regularly but in saying that maybe if they are only fed them from the time they are tiny it doesn't happen. However I am pretty sure that he won't starve himself to death if you choose to feed something else. He will be fine not eating for over a week. Try giving him something like mozzy lavae and then chuck a pellet or two of dried food in the tank as well.
  10. Can anyone else give Joshlikesfish a ride to the meeting and back?
  11. Okay ... maybe a rethink about how I could do it.
  12. I thought it was in Wellington but its obviously not! Where is it being held?
  13. okaaaaay.... well that counts me out then! Never mind, maybe next year Don't know about you Jenn but I am going to have to.
  14. thanks - we did the trip a month ago but took a couple of days to get there (we were on holiday) so now when we have to do the trip for a more serious reason we are trying to work out the best way to go. We would have flown but can't get flights back home on the Wednesday.
  15. hmmm... maybe thats why my fx5 hasn't done as well as I thought it would.
  16. sorry, should have asked - when is the agm itself? Thats the bit I want to come down for but I will have to miss the rest of the weekend.
  17. so with the fx5 should the coarser media be at the top?
  18. Okay, for those of you who travel this route how long do you think it would take to get from Auckland to Whakatane using the most direct route, and what way would you go. My husband and I have to drive down on Tuesday leaving Auckland somewhere between 3-4pm. We are aiming for Whakatane Tuesday night, then on to Opotiki and back to Auckland on Wednesday.
  19. Whens the AGM? My daughters 18th party is the Saturday night so I have to be back in time to sort that - 60 odd 17 & 18 year olds are coming to our house!
  20. Sophia - what did you feed them?
  21. As long as he is not stuck he will come out. Why do you want him out though? If he can get out I will guarantee that he comes out while you are asleep.

    Dropsy?

My first fish with dropsy lasted nearly 4 weeks before she died. These days I dispose of the fish before it suffers. There are many ways - I tend to give the bag a good whack on the ground. Quick and painless if done properly.
  23. Well after all my organising to get to the meeting this coming week I will not be there. Hubby and I are driving to Whakatane Tuesday later afternoon as we have a funeral in Opotiki on Wednesday morning.
