  1. 1. I would ring the council and ask them what they are doing with the water. 2. Are you sure that you are not getting rust in your water which is causing it to come out of the tap that colour.
  2. Thanks Ira and firefish. I've also googled it today and seem to be making some progress. I'll check out the f number and see what its at. Sorry for hijacking your thread firefish.
  3. I have 10 in a 3ft 210 litre tank and I'm not certain its big enough. I suspect the majority are males. I was told that each male prefers his own territory of about 6-8 shells which mine do not have. Theres not really any scrapping going on (that I see anyway) but maybe there are no females in there to fight over. My tank has 3 types of shells in it and two large lumps of coral rock which sort of break it up a bit. The bigger fish all hang out in the same section of the tank.
  4. yep - using macro and half pressing the shutter. I think perhaps I am just expecting too much. Its not that I can't get a decent shot, its just that I can't get a shot taken close up in focus ie if I was going to take a photo of my computer mouse then I couldn't get it to fill the screen and focus on it. Its still blurry. Am I expecting too much?
  5. how do you get it to focus really close up like in your photos (the insects) or is that just the way they have been cropped.
  6. No doubt! I see that the auction has been withdrawn anyway.
  7. There are pink danios available in some of the pet shops, they are just a colour variant of danios (they are a very pale pink like this .) The glo's were more like this]. The ones I have seen are definitely not the glo fish as of the MAF fame but people who don't know seem to download a photo off the internet instead of taking a pic. Why you are allowed to post images that are not of the actual fish for sale I do not know!!!
  8. I think I'll set up a seperate thread for nice helpful people like you to post suggestions. Maybe I am expecting too much but I am pretty sure its me and not the camera!
  9. Nice pics - I got one of those cameras for my birthday last Sunday however being so technically challenged I am struggling to work out how to get really close up shots. I've read the manual and it makes very little sense  Any suggestions appreciated or otherwise how to work it in laymans terms would be welcome.
  10. Cardinals, Neons, Danio's, possibly ember tetra's? Mine are bright orange.
  11. Whats the something else? Seriously though, the fishroom is looking good!
  12. and thats the bare end of the room
  13. it was looking good a few weeks ago.
  14. Mt Roskill is not a drip system. Its not the aqua one barracks, its 4 individual compartments within each tank and each tank has an internal filter filtering through the 4 compartments. I've only ever seen them made of glass or perspex. I reckon though, that if someone could come up with a decent system it would be worth a fortune. Alanmin had the best idea for a system - he posted about it many times.
  15. Looks very nice - how much of the back is covered with the rock wall? I suspect its more than appears in the picture. What sized tank is it?
  16. kiwiplymouth - can you explain it a little more please
  17. Well we did the trip down yesterday - 4 hrs to get there including a 20 minute stop at Matamata. On to Opotiki this morning to the funeral. Its so wrong, no parent should have to bury their child! Back this afternoon, 5 1/2 hrs including three stops totaling about an hour. We made really good time. Thanks for the assistance with the best routes to take. We went through Matamata and Te Puke. Traffic was very light on the way down and only a dozen or so trucks on the way back to slow us down.
  18. dragon scaling - looks like there is more than one layer of scales, often patchy so there is a bright shiny layer of scales over another less shiny layer and so on. Sorry to hear of your loss . How many do you have from the spawn?
  19. Ye hah :happy2: :happy1: :happy1: When I had the 3 pairs they always spawned with a day or two of each other. One of the pairs was always out of sight with their young so they are most likely the ones you can't see. One pair were the two smaller fish and the other pair were the two bigger. However I don't know if they pair for life or not so it may be possible that they have switched partners. I think I've got about 15 young survived out of the spawn which I removed them from when I sent them to you.

    Dropsy?

agreed - and if I had belonged to this forum when my first fish got dropsy and had known what I know now she wouldn't have had the chance to suffer for 4 weeks but I tried all the treatments that I could find on the internet. Nowdays I don't bother - its too cruel.

    Dropsy?

Dropsy is caused by kidney failure but no one seems to know what causes the kidney failure. I get it in patches, but if it does happen in my tanks I will lose one fish and then within about a week to 10 days I will most usually lose a second and sometimes 3rd fish. They don't even have to be in the same tank but often are. Suggestions that I have seen include - age, food, bacteria.
  22. My daughter went to Vanuatu for a week last September for a Y12/13 biology trip. She had a fantastic time. They did lots of things and saw heaps.
  23. I got a new camera today so now I will try to get some better pics of what I have. :happy2:
