  1. Rainbowfish are awesome - they require a good sized tank (which you have) and a decent space clear of plants so they can zoom across the tank. If choosing young rainbows ensure you get males as both sexes don't display a lot of colour when young and the males have fabulous colouring, females less so. I kind of liked the look in your planted tank thread with the smaller fish grouping. You could always go a heap of black neons with less of the golden barbs or something similar.
  2. The algae on the glass is being caused by too much light getting to the front of the tank - could be indirect light so coming from a window across the other side of the room. It looks very very good - your hardscape is beautiful imo and the plants are coming along well.
  3. I've kept them and never noticed any smell. I fed mine cat biscuits, kept them in a small tank with gravel and an airline.
  4. Selling my AR980 (black) 0000919_aqua-one-ar980-aqua-style.jpeg.pdfall in one as I have now gone to marine only. 18 months old, light tubes have been changed in the last six months. Filters replaced a few weeks ago and only ran for about a week. Comes with heater - Eheim Jager 150 watt which is more than sufficient for this sized tank. Has backing paper on the rear of the tank which is easily removed if the buyer wants. In excellent condition. Looking for around $250 but will consider offers. PU Epsom, Auckland. Photo of it when it was running - now empty To see what the AR 980 looks like click on this link - it is not my tank but the same model 0000919_aqua-one-ar980-aqua-style.jpeg.pdf
  5. Its possible that viewing has been restricted to financial FNZAS members. I will have a look.
  6. Still relatively new to marines myself (16 months) so I can only offer a small amount of advice but yes, you are not the first person to adapt a tank. In fact, if you go to HFF Albany they have a Juwel tank converted to a marine which runs through a cannister filter. I believe you can get HOB (hang on back skimmers). If the tank is new and you cut it you will cancel the warranty on it. The overhead filtration that comes with the tank is not suitable for a marine tank. You could look at putting a sump in the cabinet but you do not have to have a sump. People do do it by removing the majority of the centre partition, slotting the sump in and then replacing the front part of the division for bracing. The standard T8 tubes will not provide enough light. The 980T is relatively tall and insufficient light will get through - you would need a minimum of T5 lighting for corals, even the easy care ones. On the fish front mandarin or any dragonets require a tank that has been running for a minimum of 12 months. Their food source is live copepods and the population of these needs to establish properly in order for them to thrive. I have a copperband butterfly in my tank - it is 250 litres. Once again they are a very difficult fish to get to thrive. Personally I think the tank is too small for a tang but I know others will disagree with me and some keep them in tanks smaller. Hope that helps a bit
  7. If the medications are putting ammonia in to your tank then you need to stop them as they are faulty. I can assure you that melafix does not put ammonia in to your tank and the ammonia is likely to be what is causing the damage as it burns the gills. It is rare, unless you are doing 100% daily water changes to have zero nitrate in a goldfish tank. How often do you water change, how large is the tank and what type of filtration do you have on it. Also how hot is the tank? I note that the fish also appears to have bleeding in under the eye?
  8. It is awesome that you are sharing your experiences with everyone and giving people tips on the best way to breed killies
  9. Would you like to post what your ammonia and nitrates are, also nitrite?
  10. No one species of discus is hardier than others - it all boils down to quality feeding and optimum conditions. Try New Pupuke Aquarium Centre in Northcote, Ron has good quality fish at reasonable prices.
  11. 1. Yes 2. Not if they are long finned. Plakats maybe, but any long finned variety no.
  12. I've had a read and a google but cant find reviews on the tank anywhere. The tanks are Chinese, if you want a comparison see if you can find sunsun tanks to have a look at. Their tanks are okay, but the cabinets are inferior quality.
  13. Yes can do - would be $5 I think for a bag big enough.
  14. Havent seen the Soho - if you do get one my advice is to make sure that the seller has the knowledge on the tank and can provide backup service and spare parts I like the Ecostyles too. I am about to sell my Aqua One 980 simply because I have two marine tanks on the go. It was my first venture into all in ones and I wondered about the trickle filter but by being sensible about stocking levels and maintenance it has been a really really good tank. In general fluvals do have a good reputation. I have used their cannister filters but that is all.
  15. A good question, and one I waited for a day before replying to see what else was said It depends by aquarium whether you mean a standard rectangular tank, an all in one. I think it's an impossible question to answer but generally I would say that the more pricey all in one tanks are probably better designed ie bevelled edges, black silicon. You are right, it is a matter of taste. Tank cabinets, filtration designs and lighting are what I look at when looking at the cost of a tank as cabinets can be quite different in their quality. There are a couple (or more) quality tank builders in NZ who make tanks to specifications and who sell privately.
  16. I have 1 unopened 300 gram container of Tetra Colour tropical granules and 1 which is half full. Expiry date 11/16 Perfect for feeding discus and larger community tropicals. Promotes good colour. $20 for the lot. Pickup Epsom, Auckland
  17. Flourish comprehensive 1.7 Litres left of a 2 litre bottle purchased around September last year. Pick up Epsom, Auckland cost $126 selling for $40 Listing here till Monday then goes on TM
  18. Try posting under DIY. I know it can be done. I know the theory how to do it but where to obtain the pieces for it I am not sure of. PVC piping can be used - it looks tidy and and a pump for the return.
