  1. Looking good - have you registered the breeding?
  2. Thanks for all the info. NO2- (nitrite) - if you have any nitrite then it will be too much and will be 'burning' the 'skin' on the fish and damaging the gills eventually causing death. Your NO3- (nitrate) is also a little high. I suspect that the feeding is too much - once a day is sufficient or even once a day six days a week. You could cut down on the pellets too as the waste will sink into the substrate. The size of a fish stomach is approx. the same size as their eye. Too much food, too much waste and your filter may be struggling to cope with it. If ammonia or nitrite are present the fish will be coming up nearer the surface of the tank looking for more 'air' and the surface movement (gas exchange) will be providing better conditions for them. Cutting down on the feeding will also be better for your wallet Rainbows are very active fish normally, they like plenty of swimming space so having them 'hang' is not ideal. They also have very tiny throats and require micro pellet sized food. Where to from here - I would hold back on adding any more medications to the tank and work on the water quality. First up - to reduce the nitrite to 0 by a decent sized water change - 30 - 50% and then test again. If still showing nitrite continue with daily changes of around 20% and if you do have any prime available add that to neutralise the nitrite. Prime, while neutralising the effect of nitrite will still show a reading for it, so continue until the reading shows 0. These water changes should also assist with the nitrate readings reducing. Once your tank has shown 0 then reduce the water changes to 10% every couple of days for around 6 days and then stop and return to your usual maintenance. Hopefully this will stop the fish deaths.
  3. ? actvity unread content page - what are you referring to please?
  4. I've gone, like a number of others, to the dark side
  5. What are you running in the way of filtration, gas exchange (water movement) and are you dosing with excel or CO2? Are the fish eating? Are they fighting? What are your actual test readings on the tank - pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and kH if you have a test for that?
  6. You are aiming for a minimum of 4x the litreage of the tank for filtration and up to 10x depending the fish. Your filter will be fine
  7. Something must have been going on health wise for him to end up sucked against the filter in the first place. It is a bit hard to tell from the photos what the issue is as it could be several things. Google cotton wool on gourami and have a look at that. If the fish is now behaving normally, swimming normally and eating normally then the problem may resolve itself with a good clean tank environment.
  8. I may be a little late commenting. Furan2 also carries a warning hazard in that it is known to cause cancer in mice. Please wear gloves when handling and putting your hands/arm in the tank.
  9. Have a read through the information at the top of these pages - there is a category for plants with a fairly extensive list of plants, photos etc.

    HELP!

Definitely test the water as it is likely an ammonia spike. Why was the filter off? 5 goldfish in 55 litres is an awful lot of ammonia being created and if there is no filter clearing the muck ...
  11. Christmas dinner is at my house this year - will be mid afternoon though as daughter and her fiancee have to drive back into Auckland from having brunch at Mangawhai. 15 coming including one 11 month old so all decorations down low will be moved upwards as he is very mobile and starting to walk. The playpen is already around the tree to keep the dogs out. Christmas fruit cake made and decorated and I will make a gluten free, vegan chocolate cake for those who are either celiac, vegan or dairy free - or who simply don't like fruit in their cakes! Christmas lunch will be turkey, ham - for the non vegan, lasagna made with chickpeas for the vegan, new home grown potatoes, baby carrots, 2x salads plus gravy, cranberry sauce for everyone. Desert will be sugar free pavlova, chocolate chip sherry cake and fruit salad
  12. Great effort A few years back I was given a male molly from the hunt as it kept breeding with the person who caught it guppies. Weird looking fry they were too.
  13. Late to reply. Should be some sort of gasket there from memory. Occasionally a bad batch comes out of the factory.
  14. Looks like it hasn't shaved for a week!
  15. They are in one of the shops up here. Nice looking fish in a large group.
  16. Is it now in a higher light position or getting light from the sun/windows or doors? Green water is generally an algae bloom caused by too much light. If that is what has caused it turn your lights off for around 3 days and blackout the tank. That is only a short term solution though as you will need to remove the cause.
  17. I am always a little nervous when I see shared filtration. If one fish develops something then it will spread very quickly. Fighters get depressed in small spaces so are more susceptible to things like velvet and fin rot so keep a good eye on all the fish. Try and get an even distribution of flow throughout all the sections or if you have more flow at one end and have a variety of tail types consider putting the plakats in the areas with the higher flow. I do like your design, I used to have holes drilled in my dividing walls but slots will probably work better than the holes did.
  18. I'll find out how much postage is - it won't be much.
  19. Really just want the whole lot gone as no room for them. There isn't that much there anyway.
  20. Sure will - by the time my 5ft is full I will have three tangs in it and it is only 450 litres plus sump.
  21. I have two, in used condition, circulation pumps plus the nozzzles from the Red Sea 130D tank I purchased a few months back. The pumps work just fine, and as far as I know the nozzles just require new washers in order for the two parts to connect properly. Free to whoever wants them. Pickup is Epsom, Auckland.
