If i used no lid at all, could the turtle get out? Other problem is cats getting in... Would this be good for basking? http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 763347.htm

Is there a way to syphon clean my tank using less water?
firefish replied to AquaVitamins's topic in Freshwater
My dad put 2 little pieces of metal either side of the hose and screwed them together. It narrowed that point of the hose, slowing the water. Hope that mades sense? -
I've decided that i'm going to get one RES turtle. My plan is to get a 4x2x2foot tank. But with the basking lamp, What type of light bulb do i need to get? I've had a look around and saw some $70 ones. Is there anything that still does the right job but costs less? I realise i might have to get the $70 ones but just checking if i can do it cheaper. Also, i'm going to have a light over the rest of the tank. Does this one need to be a UVA/UVB ? As my turtle won't be going outside much (only in summer, while supervised)

What about the live mealworms? I could try crickets i guess 8)

Yeah, i've been thinking about the food thing. The petshops sell houseflies which look like good sizes. Its a funny thing to complain about but i've got no flies around my place at all Could i culture the houseflies (like would they breed for me?) And i'm thinking that meal worms would be good. And i can catch them slaters. I also saw some freeze dried meal worms and freeze dried river shrimp. The packet said that amphibians eat them. I was thinking that they could be a good back up if something went wrong with the live cultures. I'm also considering cockroaches. Not sure whether mum would like it if they excaped tho  The frogs i saw at animates are $13 which seems good to me.
-
I've just been out looking at whats avalible at the pet shops. Animates had some frogs that they called Green Frogs. There was no other info. Some were almost completly gold and others were really green. And some were a mixture of the two colours. They had a couple of bumps on their bodies. Would these be the southern bell frogs? What size enclosure would i need for 2 adults?
-
No, I haven't got lots of live food yet. I have to look into everything about how i would keep them first, then i can start getting things set up. How would i heat the enclosure? Do you think that a 60x45x45cm would suit 2 golden bell frogs? Thanks
-
Ok, so not brand new. Years ago I had 2 Golden bell frogs. I might have been 12. This time I want to do it right. The only problem has been convincing my parents that i can have frogs. They want me to come up with a plan to 'sell' it to them. But i'm pretty sure they'll say yes now :bounce: I've got 2 options: The first is to get 2 golden bell frogs and a 60(long)*45*45cm exo terra terrarium. Or about 6 brown tree frogs and a 45*45*60 (high) cm exo terra terrarium. How easy would it be for me to source these frogs? And what plants would suit each type of frog? I'm going out to buy a book tommorrow and i've been doing some research, but lots more to do! But i've been getting conflicting info about how large the golden bell frogs grow. One website said that males grow around 6cm and females grow around 9cm then another said they grow to 5cm :-? Any advice??

I breed my gbas in a 100 litre tank. Then, i take out the babies when they're around the wriggler stage and put them in floatining containers and when they get a bit bigger into a 50 litre tank. Has worked quite well for me

One thing i think i'll never do again (hopefully)

Those stoney cased caddisflies are amazing! its a wonder how they manage to stick all those little stones together and the shell is still smooth. -
For the last week i've been on a uni field trip (biol222) in Nelson lakes. For the last couple of days we do a group project. My group decided that we'd do aquatic insects. We chose to sample 4 rivers with 2 different vegetation types to see if there are any differences in the species. For each river we did 5 transects and 3 quadrats per transect. So that meant having 15 containers full of algae and insects to ID later per stream. So on friday night we had 45 samples to ID, with 5 of us IDing 3 of us stayed up till 7am the next morning busily IDing. But we got it done :bounce: Near the end of the night we could hardly write straight or pick up the insects. I got a fright when a leaf jumped out of the container cos i thought it was a megaloptera! It turns out that our group IDed 4000 insects in a couple of days . All of the insects were tiny so we had to concentrate really hard, but the weird thing was that after the IDing was finished we (even the ones who'd gotten a good night sleep) kept on seeing bugs EVERYWHERE, like in peoples hair, in glasses of water and in wood. there were lots of knots in the wood our room was made in and i saw a mayfly and lots of different worms The worst thing was that these wood-bugs moved like the real insects :-? Lukily we've all stopped seeing fake insects.

Firstly congrats on the breeding I feed courgette mainly but also supplement it with simking tablets which i feed to the adults. But remember to only feed after their egg sack disappears

I've got lots of fishy things around my house I used to make fish collages so we've got about 3 on the walls, And above one of my tanks i did 2 fish paintings (one yoyo loach and one albino rainbow shark) And in my room i've got 3 fish paintings i did , one goldfish, a cichlid and a lionfish. Then, i made a kinda collage of photos of the different stages of my gba babies And i've got the singing trout and the catfish  On my bookshelf i've got a few fish ornaments In my old room, i had a blue wall so i got about 20 big fish drawings done by my sister and some plants and created a whole underwater scene 8)

Be careful attaching plants with cotton, a few yrs ago my sister had tied some java fern to a bit of wood and her borneo sucker or BN (can't quite remember which) got caught under the cotton and it dug into the poor fish. We actually took it to an emergency vet and he put it down

I wasn't sure where to put this cos it can involve freshwater cold or tropical, marine cold or tropical. I know someone who is doing a honors in food technology and he has been asked to produce a type of fish food. He has to actually produce it but i'm not sure if it'll ever get to be sold in shops. So he needs to know if theres any type of food that isn't being produced at the moment, which theres is a market for. I suggested a native fish food, cos i haven't noticed whether there is actually a food produced for natives. Any other ideas??

Both of my cats like all the sinking pellets  One day, i spilt the container, the pellets were everywhere and my cat was in the room at the same time. He was eating them faster than i could pick them all up  And he was purring. I don't think it could do anything bad to them. (so long as they only eat a little bit)
-
My cat used to eat the trapdoor spiders that he caught. He started shuddering cos of the poison He must have realised cos he stopped eating and catching them. And my other cat seems to eye the food i'm eating. the other day i was eating a truffle and he wanted some so i gave him at little bit and he seemed to like it

I use some refil, but i put it in a ring binder then it won't get lost 8) I find that i print out all the lecturers slides and just do notes on them. Its awesome how little i have to write at uni
-
My sisters kitten did this too, but to a fake fur blanket. Aparently there are still little hard bits from where Hazel suckled
-
What type of hiding places do they like? I'm thinking that if i got 6 young ones (unsexable) and grew them up. Then pick a pair out to put in my 50 litre and breed them. So if i got an even sex ratio the max pairs i'd end up with in the big tank would be 2 and the 2 blue rams.
-
So, Bilbo, do you think i should try getting 5 or 6 cockatoos?
-
thanks for the advice, i think i'll have to re-think my plans now.

Didn't someone find that the moisteriser on their arms created a film on the water? :-?
