  1. Have you never really seen NZ Native fish up close and personel?? Ok so they may not be bright yellow or have huge fins on them, but I can assure you that they are as interesting if not more than alot of the exotic stuff.
  2. Animates Kaiwharawhara. Get off Motorway in Ngaranga Gorge. Someone from Wellies will have more options
  3. Yes, as Alan states. Feed well and seperate the sizes as they grow. My first lot ended up as one fat baby. I dont heat mine, they just at room temp which is about 15-17 this time of year. Good luck
  4. I have my Aqua One CF1200 been running for over twelve months. Not opening it for cleaning until I notice a drop in water flow. As Stella mentioned, the longer its been running the better. All my tests come up sweet so no need to change it. I imagine though it will look much like yours when I do Whetu. LOL
  5. Hi Darkfur They most certainly can be fed to Axys. Well I do with no problems. Have heaps of them here. I have two different containers and one has green pods and the other has brown/yellow. I think it depends on what they eating. The yellow ones have heaps of pine pollen in with them. I put some under a microscope and they looked just like the pic you posted. A small shell with feelers on one side.
  6. Firstly, lets look at possible causes. I use exclusivly Daltons and do not have green water issues, so maybe there are other factors. You have not mentioned you lighting regime or intensity. Have you tested the water for Phosphates?? How much are you feeding? Where do you source your water? There are many factors to keep in mind with algae, and unless you find the cause, you will more than likely be battling it again in the future. WHile the Daphnia idea does work, It certainly will ot in a tank that houses fish. The fish will love you for it, but the Daphnia will not last more than ten minutes. Here is a great link to an article about algae. Its causes and how to control it. http://fishkeepers.co.nz/forums/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=287 HTH
  7. Pre function party at Phoenix's House! Sounds good
  8. Come to our meeting on Sunday. Go on , do it
  9. If you can see it, then its probably too big,LOL Live food is better, does not pollute the water as fast unless you use BBS. Green water first then infusoria. Daphnia and/or BBS an microworms as they get bigger.
  10. Also, you will get nicer looking fish with a larger group. The problem with rainbows is that you never see them in their best when they are not in large tanks with plenty of cover and a larger population.
  11. Nice , Threadfins are neat. Just remember, small fish mean tsmall fry with tiny bellies. You will need to feed them microscopic infusoria, so have plenty available. I have had success with 1 male 2 female. With larger Rainbows I have used 1 male 1 female , and also a larger group. All successful. Make some mops out of synthetic wool. Buy it at $2 type shops or Redshed. Wrap around a book about 20-40 times. Cut at one end and tie in middle. Easy.
  12. The ones pictured already are always flowering. But no new ones yet. The water in my tank is heated to approx 26 degrees As the tank is enclosed the air temp is about 23 degrees. The humidity needs to be kept up. Easy to do with gass cover. Do it . Its well worth it to see them flower .
  13. Size and Fin colouring. Males fins a red, females are more orangey. Dwarf neon Rainbow Profile HTH
  14. Just wondering what you power bill is like Phill? Awesome setup there. Im very envious
  15. No worries I think rainbows are one the easiest fish to breed. Easier than Danios as you can easily seperate the eggs from fish by removing the mop. I even get them laying in mops in my community tank. Easy to save the eggs
  16. I have a plant that has two flowers at once. I have decided to try and fertilise them. I got hold of a scalpel and a pair of tweezers, and gently cut open the kettle. I removed the male part of the plant and rubbed this on the female part of the other flower. I tried to get some pics but my macro is not good emough to get a close shot. Wait now and see what happens.Fingers crossed.
  17. Threadfin Rainbow (Iriatherina werneri) Signifer Rainbow (Pseudomugil signifer), Dwarf rainbow (Melanotaenia praecox), Gertrudes Blue-Eye (Pseudomugil gertrudae). They are all suitable in small numbers. Not all at same time though. They spawn into mops or clumps of moss suspended just below water surface. Feed up on live foods and do coldwater changes. Gets mine going every time. They spawn in the morning. Eggs are very adhesive. Remove mop daily and place into seperate fry tank, replacing with another mop as the fish spawn over a few days. I have four mops used in rotation. Fry are tiny and require micro sized food. I feed green water and infusoria. Moving up to decap BS and microworms. Daphnia are great for feeding. Rainbows do like a bit of greenery in their diet also. HTH any other questions please feel free to ask

We know you can. But you hardly there when I go to your shop.
  19. You only need three sets of clothes. One to wear. One to sit on the floor waiting to be washed and one to be on the line drying from yesterday. Any more is a waste of good fish money. Uniforms dont count.

Same here. Always made sure I went in when Pete was working. Was a shame for him to leave. I agree with the price thing, but talk to the right person
  21. Get some rainbows. They eat the stuff. I add it to their tank and they eat it .They wouldnt eat a fully infested tanks worth but will eat the bits you cant get with a net.
  22. ???? Aqua, what plant are you talking about? I doubt Anubias Afzelii is growing like a weed.
  23. So am I. have got myself a scalpel and awaiting for two flowers at the same time. Crypts have an adaptive feature that prevents self pollenation. The flower matures at two stages. Firstly the female part then the male several days later. I need to cut open the kettle and retrieve some pollen and then transfer to another flower. Easier said than done. Once done it can take several months for a ripe fruit to appear. Then waiting for the fruit to open and disperse the seed.
