  1. or maybe the thermostat is so good that it turns on a lot sooner than other brands so it is easier to maintain the temp. not sure but the reality is it keeps the tank at the set temp or very near it constantly, other heaters i've owned would have 2 or 3 degree drops regularly on tanks that were only 75% of the 1W/L theory.
  2. i don't know the science of it but it is rated for a 1000L tank. It keeps my 400L tank at a constant temp at the coldest parts of winter in my garage so i'm confident a 500L tank will be the same. Its not always how big it is, it's how you use it that counts
  3. a 300W jager will, other brands probably won't.
  4. yup, that's why i got into it. my wife thought it would be better than having hobbies away from the house so i took it up. mind you, i didn't stop the other so it turned out to be another.
  5. i have had that several times, they can live in there for ages.
  6. if they breed their not under age, if they are too young they can't do it :slfg: nice work, may this be the beginning of many fry. the adults good quality fish?
  7. i was going to suggest red emps, giraffes and fryeri but figured they may not be such a good idea with the dems.
  8. i bet it will be easier with 2 BIG nets
  9. nice tank! i would just add more of the same species, double your numbers and add some nice peacocks.
  10. i have a couple of the large nets so when the water level is dropped i use the two along side of each other to do a drag net style capture. that gives me more chance of getting them. that only applies for the fish other than the adult dubs, they are kind of stupid and are easily caught with a slow net gently catching them.
  11. i guess the majority of the time is catching them. if i was sending an amount like that i would reduce the water level by 50% to make it easier. I have a few buckets that i put bags of water in ready for the fish, other than that it's catch and place in a bag. did you double bag?
  12. just my thoughts and this is a discussion forum i lost some once so i refunded.
  13. i have seen tanks at either end of temp range, 13deg to 33deg and the fish didn't die and i doubt the temp got to more than 33. maybe the secret is temp but it made the oxygen release out of the water to fast for the agitation it was getting. from the info you have provided I think the bag was too small for a 12cm clown and it was lack of oxygen due to size or heat or both. we rely on the package being moved to oxygenate the water during the time they are in the bag so maybe it sat still for too long for the amount of water and the amount of oxygen the fish was using inside it. i'm sure that some fish use more oxygen than others so maybe it was a combination of all these factors.
  14. interesting, i won't use anything smaller than the 300x450 ones i have and the majority of the fish i ship are 4cm or smaller. what length were the clowns?
  15. how much water was in each bag? one thing having enough air but if there isn't enough water to absorb enough of it for the fish to breath then they are in trouble. I have found that at least 50% water is best.
  16. sounds like you did everything right to me. i think the most important thing while shipping fish is oxygen, generally fish can handle a bit of a temp decrease. how much air/water was in each bag and how big were the fish that shared a bag?
  17. yeah i think it is certainly ethical to off them if that's what you want to do. I would say don't give them to others as there is a good chance they will let them breed and then money can be gained by selling which can cloud peoples decisions on what is best to do in that situation. I am a purest when it comes to africans but i don't see hybrids themselves as the problem, it is us who decide to sell on dodgy fish. there is no reason why you cannot keep them, if they get to the stage where they aren't working with the setup then you need to make a choice. if it was me, i would off them over giving them to someone else but that is up to you.
  18. nice skills simon, thanks for sharing.
  19. cichlid formula 1mm pellets
  20. at night? hard for them to fly when they cant see
  21. i had a nest that was around 100mm in diameter under the eaves of my garage, i just waited until dark and sprayed with fly spray until they were white. they just fell down dead.
