how is the circulation at the moment? i added a wave maker to get circulation along the tank as i aimed the spraybars mounted on the back wall toward the surface which creates a barrel roll type water movement at each end.
it could be but i expect that the sand wasn't rinsed properly.
i think that filtration will be sweet on the 400L tank. Rated 1900LPH on a 400L tank is nearly 5 times the tank volume per hour. I have rated 2200LPH on a 400L tank and it is plenty. just make sure the filter pads are up to the mechanical side of it and I am sure you won't have too many issues of clarity once the substrate is clean.
I believe the substrate does as much if not more biological filtration than the filters do so have always had a good layer of substrate.
it is always going to take some time to clear the water of debris once stirred up. after i pull out all my rocks to catch fry or something it can take up to 4 hours to get back to normal. the flow and circulation in my tank is ok, not perfect but that is fine for what i need.
once established it will be fine and to me it seems the question is related to the mechanical side of filtration as the question relates to clarity of water, not ammonia or nitrates etc.
in my 400L i have around 50 tangs. I have a CF1000 & a CF1200 so not that much more filtration than you have. I feed a lot and the tank has been running for up to a year i guess without any issues.
looks like you haven't got any bloaters, 6x2 with duboisi and another like pemba, moliro, ikola or bulu points.
the shellies, altos and some leleupi make a nice contrasting look.
i have a tank setup the same as the main tank, same temp etc. if you strip them you should just be able to throw them into the other tank, as long as there is food they should do fine. if they still have egg sacks when i strip i put them into a breeding net in the grow out tank until they are bigger then just release them into the tank itself.
what sort of africans are they?
is it one of those SOBO ones? if so then don't buy one, they are rubbish.
i have one in my 2.0m tank for a bit of circulation, don't think you need one.
