  1. I had a snake necked in my community tank. he would eat what ever he could catch, which wasn't much. just make sure you can keep the water to a quality that the fish need, turtles are dirty little critters & water quality is quickly reduced by their pee & faeces.

    My New Discus

im not really struck by discus but those are some seriously nice fish!
  3. i think there may be, that is why i am asking for info for this poll
  4. but then iwill have to get a calculator & work out rates 50 times, rate will be much more helpful
  5. filter l/hr divided by tank litres
  6. filtration rate: 9.5 algae: 1 only have a BN catfish & no water treatments
  7. please note how many algae eaters you have & if you use algae treatments please note that. i will edit initial thread.
  8. Hi all, i would like to run a poll & then debate the total findings on a following thread once i think we have enough info. I think there is a link between how much filtration you have & how much algae grows in the tank. I have alot of filtration, not high flow & minimal, if any algae. Below is how i would like the info: Filtration rate: 9.5 (200L filtered at 1900L/hr, filter L/hr / tank L ) Algae: 1 (a scale 1-5, 1 being very litle & 5 being alot) Please note how many algae eaters etc you have & if you use algae treatments to. I will record all post info & post the final info on a following thread. Thanks to all who participate.
  9. as far as i was aware pop eye was a bateria problem mostly put down to poor water quality. whether the water quality affected the plants or the plants reduced the quality i will never know. i removed plants & quality was restored to what it was before i planted them. i got rid of 60% of the plants & have not had problems since so i just gunna stick to what i know, "less plants means healthier fish for my tank".
  10. i don't think so, my tank had run with no change except the fish growing for 12 months. i added alot of plants, when they went bad i had the probs then when i removed them the probs stoped.
  11. one of my angels had the same thing, its pop eye i think. i used melafix & dosing salts & i went away in two days. also do a water change & try cleaning up your tank as this is usually caused by water conditions not being good enough.
  12. they started to deteriorate, thats when i started to have problems. i didnt have a complete setup for plants. only had sand under the gravel & wasn't using ferts enough.
  13. i dont really know what the problem was but it definately had something to do with amount of plant matter that was in the tank. the water was always clear but one of my angels got popeye & a few others deteriorated. have not had any problems since i removed alot of the plants. my tank is around 200l & have 1900L/hr filtration. this is how i originally planted it then i replanted it & had water quality problems
  14. i have an almost indentical setup to you in litres & filtration. i had major water quality probs when i "over planted" my tank. the plants started to loose their quality & then so did the water. I did not have many ferts in the water. i ended up removing everything except the cabomba & have not had any quality problems since.
  15. i am the opposite, no algae at all in my community planted but a fair bit in my african tank
  16. i have a "powerglo" tube to so it may not need as much as normal
  17. you can almost see this stuff growing when the light is on, the problem is that its hard to reach the switch cause its behind the tank. i leave for work early & my pregnant wife (who is due in two days) cannot reach it. the community tank light switch is on the side of the hood so my children turn it on. I'll turn it on each morning & see what happens.
  18. this tank doesn't get alot of light, some days dont even turn it on. it gets alot less light than my community tank which has no algae at all.
  19. i have fryeri & yellow lab juvies but they dont eat it. i have really cut back their feeding over the last two days but they have not taken to feeding of the algae
  20. I have small amounts of a brownish type algae in my african tank. is there any recommended treatments to get rid of it? I have just enough algae for it to look a litle grubby.
  21. great excuse to upgrade, i got a bigger tank when my clowns grew
  22. my angels have never done any damage to my flat leaf plants, who could tell if they touched the cabomba.
