  1. thanks again Can i use the rock salt?
  2. thanks Gannet Its a packet of Rock salt from the supermarket  Its got a good recipe for cooking but not for fish dosing.
  3. We have a parrot cichlid that is at the surface of the tank and losing its colour, as in its almost white!! All three parrots were doing this about a week ago but seemed to come right after a big(ish) water change, now only one of them has started doing it again. It is currently in a 550 litre tank with: 4 x pleco 2 x clown loach (1 really big one) 2 x jewels 2 x jags 2 x brasilliensis (sp?) 1 x ghost knife 2 x parrots no one else is behaving strangely. We have salt here but not sure how much to dose the tank with? Can anyone tell me how much to use without harming the loaches and the plecs?
  4. Not hijacking or anything...................but When I mentioned to my Grandparents that I had been recommended oyster shell for my malawis, they went scouring the local beach (Whitianga) and collected an enormous bag of SCALLOP shells (bless them). Would these be alright in the tank as opposed to the filter?
  5. If I bring a newbie cake offering and stay really quiet, can I come??
  6. We have just "created" an un-lined, un-concreted, un-anythinged hole in the ground to capture the run-off and overflow of water from the dam and the paddocks. Its about 2-3000 litres and is now home to some goldfish but its so murky we dont see them anymore. I dont know that any filter will be able to clean it up as there will always be sediment and bits and pieces coming through the pipes, but imagine the fun we could have with a vacuum
  7. Oooooo We need one of them. How much was it if you dont mind me asking? And how do you not suck up the fish??

  13. After the exceptinal video link posted on here, I stripped my E.yellow lst nite Paranoid about squishing her, I only got about 9 fry (fries  ) before I let her go because the stress levels were getting far too high, mine not hers by the way. I have got them in a breeding net with slate on the bottom so no-one sucks them through the mesh but my question now is........... What do I feed them? They are quite big I think and Im pretty sure she still has some more in her gob  Pics attached, hopefully http://www2.snapfish.com/thumbnailshare ... _=87112174
  14. The tank is great Ryan. Everybody is in and way more active. The clown loach is out ALL the time now. Now we need to find a space for my 8ft and we should be good.

  16. well, they are obviously some of the lucky ones. There is a very sound argument for getting all pets de-sexed. I cant believe there are still people out there that think their female cats and dogs "just wanted one litter" before I got them fixed. Can I suggest that anyone not wanting to desex their pets volunteers at their local SPCA/Humane rescue/Animal shelter to see exactly how many cats and kittens are looking for homes and not finding them, End result: Death Sorry for the rant.
  17. thanks African. from reading that I think the bigger one is a girl and the smaller one, a boy. Anyone out there got a really big boy?
  18. How can you tell the difference between males and females? We just refer to him as 'he' all the time There is another one in there about 12cm.
  19. http://www2.snapfish.com/slideshow/Albu ... _=87112174 I hope the link works. He (or she) is roughly 25cm and at least 10 years old. Just thought we would share pics of the beastie that Ryan helped get the big tank sorted for.
