  1. yeh, thanks Ryan. Unfortunatley, the guy wont ship so I assume he also wont package correctly etc and I dont want to put anyone out. Isnt Wellington just a hop, skip and a jump from Bulls?? Whats 150 odd k's between friends huh
  2. There are a couple of black ghost knife fish on TM at the moment that would really love to come and live in the 8.5ft tank at home. Home being west auckland. 8) The problem is, the guy wont ship them. Is there anybody in Wellington that would collect them for me and ship them up, all expenses paid of course and maybe a liquid refreshment thanks? That is of course if BGK's would be okay all the way from Wellington to Auckland TIA
  3. there is a filter in the hood of the tank and also a cannister. both are breaking the surface of the water and therefore oxygenating the water. There are plants in the aquarium but not a lot. Could be copper?] I hadnt thought of that. The aged water is cold and going straight into the tank from the plastic drum
  4. up until now she had been doing roughly 10% every couple of weeks but straight from the tap (town supply water) and not doing a gravel vac. we recommended to her that she do a 20% every 2 weeks with a gravel vac using aged water. It has been since then that the fishy deaths have happened She hasnt cleaned the filters at all since setting up the tank as they both have really good flow. I told her that unless the flow dropped there was no need to mess around with them :-?
  5. if I had to choose............ Brother russian or chocolate fudge
  6. its a 120 litre tank running an internal filter and an external aqua one cannister filter. She has 3 gouramies 3 small clown loaches (that I know will get a bigger house when they grow  ) 2 khuli loaches 5 leopard danios (or maybe less, I think one of them was also a casualty) 1 lonely 10cm female GBA So, not overstocked at all and a pretty good mix of fish with no aggression shown at all. Apparently the male GBA was just belly up this morning One of the gouramies last week was at the surface but not gasping and dead the next morning. That was a couple of days after a water change so we put that one down to the chlorine but maybe not.
  7. Hi all A friend of mine has set up a new tank and followed all the rules while setting up. Established a healthy bacteria, allowed it to cycle properly and then added a few sacrificial guppies. The guppies were all fine after a few weeks so she has now added her community however there are random deaths occuring with no visible signs as to why. She is either having a REALLY bad run or there is something going wrong somewhere. I suggested that they invest in some test kits which they have done and all the readings are fine. We thought it may have been the chlorine when doing water changes and she is now using aged water and still the deaths are happening This morning she has lost her big male GBA (approx 12cm) and last week lost a clown loach and 2 opaline gouramies. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what is causing these fish to die?
  8. cuttlefish eggs or bacon
  9. thanks all. None of the fish actually get bloodworms so Im not sure why this poor little bugger has got it. He is still in the hospital tank and it looks like the bloating has reduced a little bit. We are going to try some amoxycillian (sp?) on the recomendation of a vet.
  10. Thanks SpidersWeb. I will let her know. The vet she works for is a horse specialist so I dont know that she would have needles small enough.
  11. Hi all My sister has a Jewel cichlid (?) that appears to have dropsy. Is there anything else that could be wrong with it other than dropsy? It is still quite happily swimming around and all the water parameters are fine but it is bloated with sticking out scales but could it just be the bloated effect that is causing the scales to stick out? We have him in a small hospital tank at the moment. He got a salt bath last nite and was offered peas but didnt eat them. What would be the best medication attempt? She is a vet nurse so may be able to get hold of some antibiotics that arent available in LFS. Any help gratefully appreciated.
  12. Im gunna try REALLY hard to get to this one. As long as there are no disasters on Folly Farm, I should be there.
  13. I would like to think Natural but probably more Goofy  Long boots or short boots?
  14. whips!! (chains hurt the horses 8) ) broadband or dial-up
  15. Pool Sharks or Whales
  16. Would you believe 4 weeks?? Some may recall my post about the poor wee E.yellow that went on the hydroslide ride after someone knocked the end off the filter inlet pipe. Well, after a headcount there was a wee clown loach missing, I thought he must had met a gruesome end in someones jaws as I couldnt see him anywhere, not in the filter, not in the tank and not stuck under a rock or anything. :-? Last night, my filter was noisy and the flow wasnt so flash so I turned it off to start pulling it apart and who should be looking at me through the pipe???? Nemos stunt double. I thought he was very dead and even gave him a little squeeze after which he gave a little wriggle and did the clown loach frown! After releasing him from his plastic prison back into the tank he promptly joined his mates and Im sure was still talking about his plastic safari expedition this morning!!! He is a little smaller than his mates and has lost a bit of colour but is surprisingly very healthy!! Fingers crossed he stays that way
  17. haha I think not but I will be sure to pass on your suggestion
  18. Sorry dude but this fish aint Marge. It was bought from a lady in Whangarei when she shut down her big tank. It was in with a small (15cm 8) ) buddy and now resides in West Auckland. Im sure she would love to have 50 friends but we would need more than the 8.5ft tank she is in at the moment. Great article though
  19. thanks all How many killies could she have in a 3ft, 120 litre tank? She doesnt want to specifically breed them but if it happened, cool. 8)
  20. yeh, I thought of a tetra tank for her. It would be cool. But she really liked the killies
  21. Hi all A friend of mine has bought one of my old tanks. Its a hooded 3ft. Her dilemma is what to put in it. It will be semi planted as she likes both the green and rockery look. does anyone out there have any recommendations as to what sort of fish to keep in the community? Looking for easy to keep, hard to kill  colourful types. I showed her some killi's on TM yesterday and after the oohs and ahhs decided these might be quite nice. Are they hard to keep and can you keep different types together? She has a smaller tank at the moment with some clowns, bristles, a blue gourami, what looks like a paradise fish and some guppies. I have pointed out that the clowns will eventually get too big for the 3ft but by then she should be well and truly hooked and getting a bigger tank  Anything out there that you would recommend?
