  1. viewtopic.php?f=40&t=42391 Needs to be 1.2m (still small) long so you can heat one end and not the other so the lizard can thermoregulate. 6 months to a year they get some decent size on also. Best to have in a bigger setup from a young age.
  2. I have some outside in a trough with my axolotls .. noticed it is forming a mat through/over the acorus mound the other day.. And other years it has survived winter but not much growth. Also unheated inside .. tanks only down to about 11C so far this winter. growth is slow and sparse .. looks like java other than the new shoots xmas tree formation.
  3. Seems like a lot of air. Those blocks look good.
  4. Thanks Jennifer. 60l is probably over kill for me so 100l would be well and truly. Double the power consumption too. Noise not a major issue really. Got my last big pump from Blueandkim .. think it was a boyu but not sure. That was quiet and think that did a good 40+ airstones .. (30/40L I think it was)
  5. these ones any good? ... or is that the one you were talking about Deno. http://www.trademe.co.nz/pets-animals/f ... 523443.htm
  6. that is impressive. reptilenut - you seem to hve them sussed.
  7. 45 days with out food so far, not that he looks like it
  8. Going to try catch the ones in my 5000l pool soon. Really hard to gauge how many are in there.
  9. thanks. so does java not do the xmas tree formation?
  10. or just happy java .. only has two fluro tubes about a foot above the water surface ..
  11. Yep - all day long time. I really do though. Took the divider out of my ponds a couple years back. They all congregate in one now .. some times in summer would find a couple in the other pond but yeah. Long time happy families getting giggy with it. Probably wouldn't recommend it though :rotf:
  12. I started using newspaper and aspen .. just to hibernate on for now and they seem content.
  13. Could probably go cooler than that also. I had some l. aurea outdoors here a couple of years back and they all survived. We get around half a dozen frosts a year. Possibly more. Frogs had shelter. The few I still have that are indoors are unheated too .. been down to about 6C so far this winter. Haven't fed them for a number of weeks.
  14. at 18 degrees? for most novice brumation is more trouble than it's worth?
  15. Constant is easier to manage. Even if kept constant it isn't unusual for the animals to slow down in winter anyway. Seasonal requires an understanding of winter shut down and diet. Substrate/environment. Is more risky. Some may say more natural too, but some times easier said than done trying to replicate nature. I'd only recommend if breeding and even then not a must.
  16. any one using pine shavings? seems mixed info out there on ok or not ...
  17. Yep heat tape from incubator warehouse. Poly hides are dry, the geckos seem to like basking under that, the container next to them is full of sphagnum moss and is where they are currently brumating. I don't use mealworms. Had nothing but trouble when use to feed them to beardies. Crickets 2-3times a week when active. So far so good. p.s for young geckos I'll probably use the smaller tubs down the bottom. Same principles though.
  18. time. the most valuable thing we have? here's mine ... (tubs from the warehouse)
  19. Think you've seen Alan's viewtopic.php?f=40&t=65176&hilit=rack another here viewtopic.php?f=40&t=65193&p=703175&hilit=rack#p703175 can get heat tape from incubator warehouse.com
  20. my pond has more than I have ever seen atm .. thought it was the norm after summer to get a boost?
