  1. Howdy - just river stones as main base then finer gravel and sand on top. I dunno if it is xmas or java moss but one of them ... must keep wet or dries out and dies fast. otherplant will come to me ... was one of those $2.50 plants from warehouse. and looks like a little bamboo plant to the right. lighter moss on driftwood (up top centre left) was on it when I found it .. didn't survive though.
  2. cages and racks look well made could prob keep adults in plastic racks too. mealworms sent yesterday so you should see them today
  3. : Borax? Ants are random little beasts. Millions on my fence coming from the camellia bush.. .(so it seems they like certain camellias) yet hardly ever come inside. Probably find most ant baits contain borax. Borax itself is cheap and apparently good for treating borer, cockroaches, ants and so on. Mix with icing sugar for ant control ... I purchased some recently but like you haven't seen the ants since. Is possible my flame thrower could of signalled to them I was declaring war 8) :sml1: Farmlands should stock borax... under $20 for a large jar. Comes with instructions .... or direct from the source http://www.0800466464.co.nz/pest-contro ... -1-kg.html
  4. can leave crickets in there to. nocturnal insect good for nocturnal animal :bggrn: best to have easy access to a water dish or bit of carrot available to crickets too so they don't get the munchies. as you should with locusts too otherwise they are just dehydrating /starving. cant beat cricket imo. I find best not to have food available all the time though as they get bored of it, what ever you use.
  5. first lot of whistlers I came across years ago I thought would be neat to take some ... never seen them there again. felt a little guilty but whatever probably just luck of the draw. yeah natives don't have tadpoles and most frogs found are indeed introduced. people that winge about prices then go catch them often chuck them on tm for the same price anyway .. funny ppl out there.
  6. some times it's just easier to pay a few bucks for tadpoles than to go raid nature.
  7. the same kid is doing 'bulk' deals 10 for $15 beats falling in a pond for the cause :bggrn:
  8. good to know it's not just my stupid nose. is why I gave up mealworms years ago. theyre not so much a problem farming wise just handling them and disturbing the bedding/frass needs caution. Locusts seem to spread fine particles with the flutter of the wings so farming indoors is challenging however one could try design special enclosures and wearing masks may help but I'm yet to find a mask I'm 100% happy with. grass pretty much = locusts .. they are amazing insects eh. prob more pratical for hobbysts trying to feed a few pets. still more work than the pets themselves though and the way some people keep their mealworms and so on I'd be iffy on feeding them to my animals.
  9. there is benefits to both insects. crickets much cleaner in my view + I like to be different. locust farming is known to be bad for health causing respiratory issues as to mealworms and given the reactions I've been getting from crickets more recently id say all three are potentially very harmful. I have polyps growing up my nose and suspected from allergens. no more snorting crickets
  10. I just think if could avoid grass factor then may be more worth the time of day.
  11. allergies aside does anyone have a way to raise without the need for grass yet?
  12. daaam, my grandad would be proud of them and he made some top stuff down in Blenheim real toys eh, like the old wooden bee to pull around, haha
  13. double what dragons1833 charges + a doz beer, three blondes and one roast :slfg: not something I like to do to be honest. see if you can find someone close to you .. if get stuck i can clear out one of my old enclosures I suppose.
  14. If you can get it down to Palmerston North I can look after it. Try find someone closer to home though if possible
  15. exo terra and other vivs similar are like being in a glass box... not ideal for a nocturnal slightly vulnerable little gecko trying to settle in to its alien environment. most do ok but got to wonder if better off hidden in your sock draw. ..so to speak.
  16. Good stuff. Southern bells in the horowhenua chirping already, must be loving the mild weather. Still no pesky flies though :happy1:
  17. how are you getting on... more likely southern bell frogs. plenty around wellington. golden bells survive only an hour north of welly though so could possibly be either species. if outdoors in appropriate setup best to leave them to it.
  18. about 400 high per must be a full sheet of mdf high so 2400mm total height.
  19. and the guy still trying to turn the wheel like a boss when it was on its side. even looked to correct the overstair before it hit the water haha pretty cool those boats.
  20. Hey Mystic, What did the vet suggest? If toes are that bad then a vets opinion would be the best option. Have a feeling vege oil or something like that can help aid in the loosening of the un-shed skin BUT don't just try any old oil and would suggest VET first as I am only recalling something I have read online. Regarding appetite - first thing to check is temps.
  21. probably just need some crickets in their diet :bggrn:
