  1. Just wondered if the society didn't agree with using mealworms and sneaky was being sarcastic? or ... I no longer use them but don't see a problem with them. I recall someone telling me not to use blowflies cause they lay eggs in lizards ears. Apparently some truth to that but only in regard to one species of fly and only an issue in certain circumstances and so on...
  2. I seem to have been banned outright from the whole forum when didn't pay subs :sml1:
  3. ah supergroove that's the one - thanks the memory fails me at times. yes google is plentiful eh - makes you wonder if some gone wild down there and it's being swept under the pitto bush. I remember seeing discrepancies between articles and alleged potential consequences so who really knows.
  4. heard on the radio but see a few articles if google it. people always want what they seemingly cant have. no scorpy orpy orpy oes yo or snakes for me thanks.
  5. he probably just forgot he had fish in his pockets. :lar:  no one else hear about the scorpions found a week or two back?
  6. Filters are becoming more affordable. I'm currently using 1micron pre filter, 1 micron carbon then down to 0.2micron carbon then uv treatment. Pressure guages help to give an idea of when filters need changing. Pre filters a matter of dollars so replace them at least twice as often as the carbon blocks. I hardly trust local authoritites to get the water right .... just up the road they're on water boil notice for 12years
  7. why dont people think about a good filter for house and fish tank water supply? I mean nz water is fairly rank in parts. add chemicals to nuetralise chemicals sounds good in theory but just filter the crap out has to be a much better way. or am I missing something?
  8. seems the one on the right is a new female ... stoked as have very few females
  9. All good- Japanese rush is the common name.
  10. Interesting I will have to do some reading. cheers. Acorus variegatus - more a bog/marginal plant but does ok in cold water for a few months. I have a big clump floating, with leaves out of water, in a trough about 30cm deep outside. Can send you a little bit if you like? Otherwise go to a nursery and get a large one and divide it up. I use to get about 20-30 divisions from each plant then flick them off on tm
  11. good read that :sage: from the conclusion down the bottom
  12. yeah not sure what part they have to play if any. but they are there and I have certainly seen limb deformities ages ago. the tadpoles that did well last year were in troughs with just about every critter a pond can have though. so sort of think captive care just not adequate. parasites however could be opportunist and only infecting in captivity because of stressed tadpoles or other factors.
  13. I do have one of those usb microscopes but the one I have is not very clear. Will dig it out later and give it a try though. Wood is dried in between spawns. not sure if ever gets dry enough to kill everything though. Good idea ... was going to try more artificial .. ie no wood. will see what I can do. however both tanks full already. Juggling frogs and musical crickets - pretty much the story of my life.
  14. to speed things up for repto Fast forward to 0:54, 2:15 and then 3:10
  15. Thanks for the replys. Interesting - I have used Aviverm in the past - frogs were all good with it. Would just be neat to raise a couple of batches without these present and see what the result is. Frogs themselves seem happy as so not too keen on nuking them unnecessarily. Not sure if these are actually problematic however have suspected these little demons to be causing some interesting results in the past. If one burrowed through genetic material i'm sure they could alter the genetic code for melanin production ever so slightly :nilly:
  16. Every time the frogs spawn - these things turn up just after eggs have been laid .... 2mm? and crawl like little caterpillars on the bottom of the tank. Any ideas on what they are exactly would be helpful. No snails in tank . . . basically just the frogs doing their business ...
  17. mine don't really have any where to hide so hard to comment. any food during the day should help bring them out - flies in particular would be good for that?
  18. probably - also more active at night? I get what your are going for as they do seem to like branches. key is food and they like a mist from time to time eh. little ones opening their mouth to the spray is classic every time
  19. With heaps of branches they hide too much ime. I like the simplicity of the above viv..
  20. that's just a fish tank with a couple of floating rafts (turtle basking islands) with moss and lucky bamboo chucked in the tank as needed a home for it. don't have any planted tanks as such atm.
  21. bit worse than the other significant one here a few weeks back (manawatu - horowhenua) my fish tank that has 100mm clearance to the top of the tank managed to make a wave higher than that and put water on the power box next to tank makes one wonder what a really big one nearby would be like.
