  1. We've got eels, they eat the ducks. Unfortunately the discharge system is designed to empty on the low tide only. When the tide comes in it closes the outlet, so inanga won't naturally find it. We'd have to introduce the bullies and inanga hence the $5K fee to DOC.
  2. The pond is fed by storm water and overflows into the sea so its not a closed system.
  3. Well not exactly... We (the company that I work for) are in possession of thousands of gambusia in some of our ponds and no-one can prosecute us or compel us to get rid of them. In fact I would like to get rid of them and replace them with native fish. However since it would cost us over $5000 to get permission to release native fish, let alone the actual eradication costs, I can't come up with a sound business case for getting rid of the gambusia. So the gambusia multiply and multiply...
  4. How long would you expect JBL Aqua basis to last? And besides stripping down the tank and starting again, what are the options?
  5. It's still alive, but I'm thinking it's time to send it to the big fish tank in the sky.
  6. http://www.loaches.com/articles/hillstream-loaches-the-specialists-at-life-in-the-fast-lane Hillstream loaches include Borneo Suckers and are one of my favorite types of fish. I have lots! Including over a hundred Sewellias. They definitely love fast flowing, high oxygen water.
  7. Personally I don't feel qualified to circumcise a fish  (I never did like disections at uni)
  8. fine gravel (3-5mm max size)
  9. They're rare because the male can't normally breed as it's gynopodium is too big . But you can breed a high fin male and a lyretail female to get a 50:50 split of lyretail fry.
  10. The Mangere Treatment Plant used to make their biosolids available for gardeners but then the Greenies complained, (something to do with heavy metal concentrations), so now they're looking at using it to recreate the volcanic mountain of Puketutu.
  11. Mine eats floating ciclid pellets but I've got to throw them into the water to make a little splash. I guess its simulating the splash of insect prey. They only want one per day though.
  12. I've got a blue emperor tetra that has been impersonating a headstander for over a month now. But I've finally managed to get it out of the 5ft tank and into a hospital tank. But what should I use for meds?
  13. Excuse my ignorance, but why go double skinned?
  14. When it happened to me I used a sash clamp and a couple of bits of wood to take the strain while the silicone set.
  15. Although it will kill the BBA with direct contact (use a syringe to squirt it on). It only indirectly affects other algae by allowing higher plants to outcompete the algae for other nutrients. The green algae will then starve to death (assuming that there is a limiting amount of nutrients i.e. not like my tanks  )
  16. I've got Kuhlis, Yoyos and Chain loaches in a planted tank with no problems.
  17. I've found the chain loaches to be the best. Clown loaches get lazy as they get older. Chain loaches also eat the really tiny snails.
  18. Thanks for that. Funnily enough I was driving out that way on Saturday and I thought it looked like a good place to try.
  19. So that explains it. I have MTS and NFHS  . Well spring is just around the corner and I can see some Father and Son (8yrs) bonding coming up in the next school holidays 8) . If only I could find a nice rocky stream that wasn't part of the regional parks as I'd like to get something other than Inanga . If I can't, at least we can have fun spotting critters up in the Waitakere Ranges . (But we should be able to get some more bullys from the stream leading to the beach. )
  20. The fluffy patches will be a fungus infection. I find that Furan2 is the best medication.
  21. Use a syringe to squirt it on the BBA. It'll turn red in a couple of days and die quicker.
  22. I've seen them in the Waitakere Ranges but as its a Regional Park I don't think you're allowed to take them. I'd love to catch one though.
