  1. Thanks for the offer. We'll definitely have at least one night there for an event (maybe September?). And by a curious quirk of fate the meeting venue is going to be an item for discussion at this month's meeting on Tuesday night.
  2. Edited: Try that then. I guess it doesn't like the hot links.

  4. I wouldn't be trying to treat fluffy white poos with prazi. So I'd go with Discusguru's suggestion. But he only way to be sure would be to collect the poos and get a lab to microscopically examine them for parasites and bacteria.
  5. They're fine in totally fresh water. But apparently they need a bit of salt to make them breed. Having said that there used to be someone on trademe who had them breeding in her pond without salt.
  6. I've found them at every beach that I've tried in the Manukau Harbour
  7. Catching shrimps is quite easy really. Find a beach with a small stream. Find some over hanging vegetation e.g. some grass hanging into the water. Use a net and drag it along the underside of the vegetation. If there's no shrimp then you probably wouldn't want to catch anything from that area anyway as there might be a pollution problem.
  8. I looked at most tank makers and suppliers in Auckland when I was getting my tanks made and I found the the best one was Greg from Tanks 2 U.
  9. NO! don't use vaseline on O-rings. The petroleum jelly will melt the rubber slowly over time. You need to use silicone grease.
  10. What's the latin name for the Freshwater Puffers at HFF at the moment? Can you also give me some details about the conditions they need?
  11. http://www.aquaboards.com/viewtopic.php?pid=32547 It's possible that it may not work because the trimming removes the hook part of the gynopodium that the male needs to secure himself to the female vent. It may also be the case that heterozygous (HH) high fin genes are leathal to the developing egg. When I was trying to breed my Lyre Tails I decided to get a high fin male and use him, like th eone in your pic. But it so long to find one that one of my females changed sex and as it was developing its gynopodium it fertilised the other females and I ended up with all the variants of Lyre Tail, High Fin, and normal swordtails.
  12. Try adding more pipes so that the other males can have a potential breeding site.
  13. With the Lyre Tails the gonopodium becomes corkscrew shaped at the end. If you don't want to circumcise your fish, you can get a high fin male to cross with the lyre tail to give a good proportion of lyre tails.
  14. As the subject says... ...What can you tell me about breeding Severums? Any tips? Do you know of any good links? Have you had actual experience?
  15. Our inanga love mossie larvae and will take tubifex worms from our hands. They also love young black crickets.
  16. I'd like you to share your opinions and experiences about Green Severums and Severums in general please. I'm in the research phase regarding adding a large fish to my 5ft tank which is relatively tall and has a volume of 300L. Current residents: 2 Angel fish (males) Bristlenoses (most are quite large) Clown Loaches YoYo Loaches Kuhli Loaches Plants: Java Fern, windelov Tiger Lotus Crypts Indian Fern (large leaf) Cyperus helferii Thanks in advance
  17. I've found with Royal Whiptails, Sturisoma festivum, that you need to have a relatively dirty tank because the fry feed on microscopic critters in the muck. You still need to do water changes but don't vacuum the bottom. I don't know if Red Whiptails are the same but I wouldn't be surprised.
  18. You only have to worry when your catfish goes "meow"
  19. Yep another vote for HFF. I find that Friday afternoon is the best because they'll have the stock for the weekend in, and you can have a chance to buy before the weekend crowd.
  20. I found that chain loaches are the best. I've got Skunk, Yo-yo (lochata), Clown, and kuhlis.
  21. I use 6mm aluminium extrusion (thin aluminium rod), plastic fly screen mesh, and silicone tubing split lengthwise to clip the mesh to the bent rod. Approx cost $10. All available from Bunnings or Mitre10 Mega. Assembly time under 1 hour. You're welcome to come and see mine.
  22. One of the tasks I'm involved in is the weekly mossie checks. The surveillance program checks sites up to 4 km away from the terminal looking for foreign vectors and breeding sites. Some of these vectors travel only 400m in their life time. Murray Valley encephalitis and Ross River virus, have vectors present in NZ as does Yellow Fever and Dengue Fever. But the chances of someone coming into the country with one of those diseases and being bitten by a mossie that then goes on to bite someone else (i.e. you) is very low.
