  1. What is the concentration of the med? (Either in mg per L or %.)
  2. I'd like to add a related question if that's ok. What's the difference between platinum and snow?
  3. Today I saw the worst cases of whitespot that I've ever seen at Animates Lincoln Rd Henderson. Poor fishes
  4. I'm off to Fiji on Monday, and back on Tuesday morning. If I'm not there it's only because I'm jetlagged.
  5. I can help with the plants, but I've got algae so you'd have to sterilise them before adding to your tank.
  6. Same as Titirangi, 0 degrees. Good old Waitakere Water Catchment Area surrounded by bush.
  7. The trace element mix in PMDD is an example of adding minerals that will add to the hardness of the water. West Auckland tap water has a hardness of 0 or rarely 1 and I've found a few types of plants that just won't grow without added trace nutrients. I've also used scallop shells in a tank and they disolve over time adding to the hardness. And obviously with each water change I leached even more out. This is so true, messing around with chemicals is the easiest way to stuff it all up. The shell method is slower and more gentle.
  8. Yes it is normal as the plants use calcium, magnesium etc as they grow. Have a search for "poor mans dosing drops" for an example of DIY fertilisers. There is a hydroponics crowd called Stocker who I use for my fertiliser supplies. Here's a link to them: http://www.hydroponics.co.nz/
  9. Its a maths question and the answer is either A or B. The problem is related to the order of magnitude. The amounts and type of medication are irrevelant but because you're all interested it's Malachite Green and I have 100ml so there's enough to treat the tank several times. One the beauties of the metric system is that because 1000g = 1000ml of water then %, mg (weight) and ml (volume) become interchangeable. Thus a 4% solution contains 4g in 100ml As 200 / 4 = 50 then the last thing to work out is where the decimel point sits. A or B?
  10. Maths Question: The medication concentration is 4%, And a final concentration of 0.1 mg/L is needed, The Tank is 200L, Is the dose A) 0.5ml or B) 5ml
  11. There is a type of 12 gauge round called "birdfrite" which is like a firework that explodes with over 120dB and a flash. Another possibility is mylar ribbons tied to his favorite perch. Make them about a metre long. Because they are reflective, when they move in the wind they will flash and crackle which simulates fire. Otherwise you'd have to look a a sonic device like those made by "Birdgard". You'll have to do a google search but I know they have a rep in Christchurch. My job? - I stop birds and planes colliding.
  12. Yeah, looks like the King Killies are off the list for now.
  13. Thanks Stu. As well as those two species (which I've already got) I'm thinking of getting Aphyosemion striatum and king killies. What is the latin name of king killies? Can Aphyo. and Fundulo. be kept together and can any of the three species be kept with king killies?
  14. I have to be careful because I'll be using the old kitchen in the garage and I don't want to create a shecave. Problem solved : I'm going to use the old sink to grow whiteworms . The talk sounds like another great idea.
  15. Definitely a good idea. I've got a lot of broken lids and other pieces that will probably make good killi tanks, now that I know how to cut glass. Or at least they'll give me some practice.
  16. I got fed up of watering house plants about 3 years ago, so a tank was ideal, especially since I had one sitting around from when I had a frog. I only added fish so I didn't have to fertilise them. I now have a case of MMTS But I used to have a pond in my teens when the supermarket had a 95cent goldfish coupon on the till receipts for the LFS. I've just got the pond back off my parents this year and it now has Inanga and Bullies in it.
  17. The 1.5m tank is too tall, and the other tanks aren't an option for conversion. I'm supposed to be getting rid of the 3ft 'hospital/quarantine tank' although that would be the obvious one to convert. But we've just had our kitchen renovated and I'm thinking of putting the old cupboards into the garage (with some insulation) and turning it into a breeding setup. And then displaying them in the planted tanks in the house. Barrie's tank building demo at the last AK Fishkeepers meeting is in part the inspiration. The other part is the "I'm turning the kitchen into a fishroom" comment.
  18. Exactly. That's why breeding guppies isn't worth the time . But when your wife has said no more tanks (currently a 2.5m, 1.9m, 1.5m, 1.2m 3ft and a small tank) and you want to get more killies; then the only option is house several types together. But I'm only going to consider types that won't interbreed. If, for example, gardeneri and king killies don't hybridise, and they get along, then putting them into a community tank would be a possibility. I could then look at using the hospital tank as a spawning tank. (At least until I convince the wife that it would be ok to have a breeding setup in the garage if I get rid of the guppies. )
  19. But P82 is the same species as nigerianus and gardeneri blue and gardeneri aquarium strain, from a taxonomic view. I think you mean varieties. What I want to know is what strains can be mixed without hybridisation and diluting the genetic variation.
  20. I've got confused because I've been looking at killis on the net at work. And I've seen identical pictures that have been labeled as both varieties. At least I'm beginning to understand (correct me if I'm wrong) why you don't mix different killies. To me, with my genetics background, hybrids are between species (and usually sterile) but in a lot of killi articles the term hybrid is used refering to mixing varieties. The varieties may be geographic species but aren't genetic species. Then just to confuse things some species of killies will hybridise and most killi articles refer to varieties as though they were species (like in my initial question). This is why the full latin name should be used, so newbies like me don't get confused. Is there somewhere that states something like "don't mix any of these from Group F: P82, nigerianus, gardeneri (blue), gardeneri var gardeneri, etc but any from that group can be mixed from Group E" (whatever group E is). Anyway for thanks for letting me visit Barrie. It was great. The killies have settled in nicely and the male has bullied the Gouramis out of the mass of Ambulia (bubblenest site), so I'm going to send the Dwarfs to Wok this weekend. And what is the full latin name of the killies that I got off you? Thanks again.
  21. Whats the difference between a gardeneri blue and a nigerianus? And what's the full latin name of both?
  22. I don't know if this helps definitely not a dwarf sag don't think its var. parvulus as the flower isn't pinkish Best I can do is agree that its a E. tenellus var unknown, sorry.
  23. As the subject says what species can be kept together in a community tank? And also which species should never be kept together because they will hybridise?
  24. get some water from Billaney
  25. Yeah I had the same problem with my 2400. I got a new set of handles as well, free of charge of course. I've had no problems with my 2200 which is why I bought a 2400, and until I put it outside I cursed it daily. Even with the new impellor it hummed incessantly. But outside it's drowned out by the waterfall. I certainly would never recommend them to anyone, the price difference for an fx5 outways the hassle factor tenfold.
