  1. I've actually seen 7 young adolfoi over the weekend. It's not enough to register a breeding but enough for me to think there is a chance of the group expanding over time. But if another shipment was to come in from Germany or wherever I'd buy a few to add to the genepool. With a bit of luck Simian and I might trade a few in a couple of years to mix up the genes. They're definitely one of my favorite cories as well as Sterbai.
  2. I only had one survive out of my group that I put into my 2.5m tank But in the weekend I discovered a half sized youngster :bounce: (and possibly a couple of tiny fry) so they must have spawned at least once before leaving this mortal coil :bounce: .It was the most amazingly excitingly cool thing to discover. :bounce: I remade the tank at Easter and since then I've had red whips successfuly spawning multiple times, a royal whip fry survive past the 6 wk stage and now the Adolfoi. And I'm still in the new tank stage.
  3. I've had the experience. And I can recommend the Giardia Diet if you need to lose 5-7 kgs in a couple of weeks.
  4. livingart's link makes a distinction between Blackworms and Tubifex. And I'm pretty sure that these aren't tubifex worms as they can swim.
  5. What conditions do you keep them in? And what do you feed them?
  6. Thanks . I found them in the substrate around the roots of some crypts when I changed my big tank around. Funny how blackworms are red :-?
  7. Can anyone identify this? It's the same worm in each picture, they only way I can describe it is that's it's leech-like There's 12 other pictures in the same folder but they're too large to post here they're 001, 002, 003, 020, 021, 023, 024, 026, 027, 028, 029 and 030
  8. I've just found this site and I thought its worth sharing http://www.guitarfish.org/algae It has some good diagnotistic pictures with causes and cures.
  9. And its happened again  Its happened so many times recently that I would complain  except for the fact the we're changing to Orcon on Friday . After a long bout of procrastination we've finally upgraded the home computer and we're finally getting broadband  . (I've been lucky that I haven't needed it because I can use the computer at work. )
  10. I like the idea of applying firearms license rules to pet ownership. You'd have to make an application; the authorites would visit your home to see where the pet is going to be kept; they'd interview your partner/flatmate/spouse/referee etc without you being present; you'd have to do a course and pass an exam; they'd do a background check. And the process would take time. And if at any stage you fail you couldn't get a pet.

    hi

  12. When you seriously consider an addition to the house for your fish tanks. Or you're planning renovations of the garage that include insulation and multiple power points. Or when you've costed both options out and your preferred option is both.
  13. No, they're introduced and the water is heated by the nearby geothermal powerstation. Thanks HaNs. Those are the ones I'm talking about
  14. There are those ones near the Huka Falls that you can go fishing for. Great entertainment for the kids but unfortunately they won't let you take live ones home.
  15. They don't look like them, more like a flat worm or leech.
  16. I don't think they're planaria as there are a few white ones on the glass at night now that the substrate has been changed. And I've never seen them swimming or sticking out of the substrate. In fact I wasn't even aware of their existance until I pulled out the plants and found them in the substrate amongst the roots. Then I kept finding the odd one when I removed the stones etc. I always imagined that tubifex were more like an earthworm than a flatworm/leech as I've only ever seen them freeze dried (and grey).
  17. When the staff at the LFS let you catch your own fish.
  18. I've found some red worms in the substrate that I've removed from one of my tanks, and I was wondering if anyone can help identify them. They're able to change their length from under a centimetre to a couple of centimetres by going very thin. They are kind of leech-like and when they move you can see pulses of thickened body moving along their length. I've got some in a bowl so I'll try to get some photos up in the next couple of days.
  19. Hi ghostknife, what were the smaller fish? Hi dantedobe, how big is your tank?
  20. I'm wondering about putting some Balantiocheilos melanopterus into my 2.5 metre tank (after it's had it's makeover, which is this weekend). And I've got some questions for anyone who has experience with these fish. What were there tankmates? How many would you keep in a tank this size? Any other advice?
  21. Would painting the back and/or sides work? Use a paint roller to get an even coat.
  22. Sort of like the inches of fish per gallon?
  23. Currently there are 8 x 54w T5 worth of lights on the tank. Which is enough for the E. tennulus tennulus carpet and the E. osirus. There's approx .6w per litre or 298w per sq metre. But there is too much light for the Anubias so I'm thinking of downsizing the lighting on the end areas of the tank. I'm also looking at raising the drift wood so that I can see into the 'cave' areas that all the fish like to hide in (they like sitting in the shade), so the number of lumens will increase for the plants on the driftwood unless I go to low light levels. So back to the original question... What would be 'low lighting' for the tank? In T8 and in T5?
  24. The tank is in the dining room which has an opening to the kitchen. The tank is beneath the opening so if I were to hang a metal halide it would be at eye level of either the diners or a person at the kitchen sink.
  25. Hi SamH, Unfortunately Metal Halides aren't an option due to the room layout.
