OK, this may be a really stupid question, but how do you know if your plants get their nutrients from the substrate or the water? I want to know if I should add fertilizer to the water or put it in the gravel.

I am setting up a tank, but the flouro light (single bulb) I've been given is not as long as the tank. What sort of plants (cheap and available) would be good to grow in the dark corners?
