  1. I would definitely say that dropsy is contagious, and if i suspected a fish had it, i would either euthanise instantly, or remove them to another tank of their own. It is not worth the risk, because as far as i'm aware, dropsy cannot be cured
  2. Even though i absolutely LOVE killies and would have them over ANY fish, i would suggest starting out with something that requires no work to breed (like kribs) as killies can be a task to keep the eggs correctly, stop them fungusing etc. Go kribs man, i have bred them heaps and they are awesome. you can interfere as much as you want, or you can just leave them too it.
  3. Best to store it in the fridge if its dry blue. If you decapsulate your own, it is no longer 'dry' and needs to be kept in a saturated salt solution, which can be kept wherever. I just use normal BS eggs, and hatch them out as you usually would. I think its better to use live food than 'dead' food. I am wanting to decapsulate a small amount myself though, so i can use it when i need to (ie when the air pump on my bottle turns itself off (happens occasionally) or when i go away for 3 or 4 days and i cant put a bottle on before i leave, i can have something to feed them as soon as i get back, not having to wait another 24 hours for food. I have alot of hungry mouths to feed (killies + fry galore!) so i always have BBS hatching
  4. Havent heard anything from anyone in ages jim. No newsletter has been sent in the last few months either. sorta gone downhill since our glue left
  5. Another way to try breed them, which i do with mine, is to put a pair into a tank FULL of java moss for a week, then pull them out. You will see fry appear after another week or so. I have done this a few times now and i have heaps of fry. I spawn two pairs (in seperate tanks) at a time though. Also, i have my males and females seperated unless spawning, and i spawn them in two litre tanks
  6. Happy to see you, or those prawns that you sit over their tank to tempt them?
  7. no thats fair enough, but i know that others namely the Conch) has had trouble from it. It kills pencilfish (the conch and myself have both done it i believe ) Other than that, it cant be too bad, but personally i will never use it again. It seems to do nothing anyway  There is no substitute for water changes, and when fish are sick, they should be done regularly
  8. aged water is water that has been sitting for 24 hours or so, usually with an airstone in it to de-gas any chlorine in it (sorta the same as using water ager but i hate water ager) Also it gives you a chance to get it up to the correct temp before you put it in the tank. I have a 200L barrel in my room beside the tanks and i just fill it up with the garden hose every week. It has a 300W heater in it, plus an airstone. I also have a powerhead in it, with a long hose attached to it, and i simply just pump the water into my tanks when i need it. Instant aged water, no shock to the fish, more chance of them healing/being in top shape
  9. Yes, melafix can actually do more bad then good IME. Best remedy is water changes!!!
  10. Personally i would not touch melafix, but would instead do daily water changes with aged water. all the best
  11. probably not forever, but you could leave an established planted tank longer without food, than you could a bare tank. Caryls fish could probably go for a good two months before the first ones start to die (IMO)
  12. No, because they dont need heaps of food in a well established planted tank. Infact caryl most likely has the healthiest fish here.... Infact, my community tank (established planted tank) only gets fed flake food about 3 times a week, then live brine shrimp another 2 or 3 days. They dont get all that much food realy....
  13. I feed mine once a day, about 5 times a week (if that makes sense)
  14. Kelvin and lumens have no relation at all (IIRC)
  15. First of all its a turtle, and second, have you never seen the huge big bright yellow advertising that shows at the top of the page saying 'living art wildlife park' ? In other words, yes he has a large wildlife park open to the public, with a huge range of animals. Awesome place Sucks to hear about your reeves mark. Might be time for some CCTV cameras
  16. If the low level racism has been removed from amazonians post above, then why hasnt the shoelace part been removed too? I would find that offensive if i were asian..... EDIT: by the way, i personally wouldnt touch it with a barge pole by the look of it. It is cheap nasty crap IMO* *your opinion may vary
  17. Why put him down if hes still eating fine, acting happy and generally is alright.....
  18. When my fry first hatch i put them into small containers which are probably about 300 mls, then i move them up to a 2L tank after a week or two, then up from there
  19. I know that if i were in your situation i would add one. However, if you can afford a bigger/better one then get the best you can, as those little ones arent hugely effective, but still will work.
  20. I'm guessing that the ones from HFF came from him originally Looking good too! Glad you got rid of the dollars and put plants in! Awesome choice! Cant wait for aro :bounce:
  21. Nah not hard to keep at all. they are realy cool little fish, not like normal corys in some ways as they like to swim around and hover mid water. I used to have a group of about 6 of them until a few died (from old age i think) so i sold the rest. Would be realy fun to try breed them!
  22. im with jim and david on this one
