  1. That tank would probably be ok for dems/yellows Just make sure you add at least 12 dems to start off with.. If your ever out my way and you want to come and look at my fish let me know I have plenty of africans that might give you some idea what you can do.
  2. Under the bulls bridge has plenty of nice big round black river rocks
  3. Yeah it would be worth a read.. You can get plenty of good ad konnings ones too, I have just borrowed a few off a mate who got them off Amazon. Tang books are pretty depressing though You wont see or hear of 99.9% of the fish in the book, or of the ones we do have here they will be really poor quality compared to the stuff in the book.
  4. Lol wrote that on my phone have no idea what it is, but it is supposed to be a glassier
  5. Find out where it waitakeri it is, I might be able to go and have a look for you I have no idea about vintage cars though. Will also talk to a guy I know who does all sorts of old chevvies and stuff he might be willing to have a look at it.
  6. Take it to a gossamer if you want it done right, you can DIY but it is risky and cam be messy..
  7. There are an awesome batch of what appear to be good quality dwarf cichlids recently imported.. Feel free to rouse up interest in killies in the killifish section, or join the killie club there are (or at least were) tons available..
  8. It is a shame we have family down all day tomorrow Is there any chance you can let the Auckland club know in advance if your planning a club trip? We might be able to actually plan something and schedule a meeting around your trip?
  9. Yeah it is terrible with kids, you end up really stressed out by the time you actually get in there! Last time we went it was on a weekend and we had booked our tickets, there were literally hundreds of people in line and we got to pass them all in the paid lane.. Felt kinda bad for them but hey makes things allot easier
  10. Yeah would be all good getting new species into the country and out there If you were getting 20 of a colony type fish there is no point in splitting them so you would be paying to have one person keep the entire colony and breed them. Unless you have wholesale contacts you would have to go through a store and get them to approach a wholesaler, and it may be a case of putting up cash first to convince the wholesale/store you are serious and them only ordering the amount of fish you have pre paid for. Also with fish that are considered a higher risk it may be a cash up front deal where you pay for the amout of fish they order and take the risk of loosing them in quarantine. Of course this is all off the top of my head and I haven't approached a store/wholesaler (because I don't have the thousands of $$ required sitting here to do it). Just discussing it on behalf of my mate who asked.
  11. It probably wont stain anything it will just disipate into the tank and achieve nothing for you.. You might be better off sticking the eggs in an ice cream container or something with no holes if you want to stick meth blue in there.
  12. This is all well and good in theory and something that I have done in the past with people just given them males or females to get things breeding and sorted it out later and could work.. A few things to consider though say 3 of you go thirds in a colony of fish that costs $3000. 1. Who gets to keep and breed the fish? 2. How would you feel if the fish were to die and you were to be say $1000 out of pocket? 3. How are the fry allocated to each person and are the adults divided up again? As much as it is a great idea there are always going to be issues with doing things that way, I have been bitten in the past and will no doubt be again. There are always emotions and all sorts invovled in anything to do with money and that is where it gets difficult. Maybe forming groups to contribute and front up with cash to buy groups of fish and then divide the spoils if any (the reality is in a market like NZ you wont make $3k of a colony that costs you that). Maybe it would be worth it to get a few new species into the country?
  13. Yeah I agree, but I can understand why the importers/shops don't go out of their way for people.. I mean if some of the fish named above came in they would be retailing for $150-200+ a fish and things like tropheus need to be in big colonies to succeed and actually produce enough fry to sell, can you justify or afford 15-20+ fish and run the risk on them? Our list is such that we can get all sorts but it all comes down to money..

    UV filter

Well I think it will reduce the number of free swimming whitespot spores if you had an outbreak but I am not sure if it would wipe it out though? Hard to know.. But salt will though. I think that you just had bad luck mate, maybe you brought some sick fish and they just wiped the others out, they were weird spots that those fish I saw had on them so I am not sure. Did the tonic do nothing? Just let it runs its course let the plants grow and then build up again, maybe keep a quarantine tank this time though and quarantine all new fish for a month before introducing..
  15. See if you can book your tickets online and prepay It saves ages in the line!
  16. I will try and get some pics, the ones I got were quite skinny so I am trying to fatten them up and see if I can get them going.. Not hard to breed at all really same as any mouth brooder, I have had them and bred them before but had issues with the males aggression and he wiped out all the females then someone cracked him in my big display tank.

    UV filter

Im with David here, I don't think there is any merit in using a UV unless you are using it for a purpose - ie green water or to help try and reduce a parasite infection or something like that. Even then I would suggest that has limited use because the UV wont actually treat all the water as it goes rushing past it, the bulbs wear out etc.. I have used one in the past when my tank water was going green, but found it allot easier to just stop feeding the food that is high in phosphates. Also bear in mind that a 100% sterile environment (almost impossible to achieve) is quite bad for our fish.
  18. Yeah if you buy a big tin it would last most people over a year and costs stuff all, I use the decap which is cheap and goes a long way.
  19. Yeah that was Paul B from Wainui, he had some nice fish.. He has all but disappeared these days so I wouldn't even know if he was still keeping fish, maybe someone from Wellington can help, his username on here was Paulb or something like that. Failing that there are others breeding the long fin and the albino long fin bristlenoses..
  20. She lives in blockhouse bay in Auckland - she posted it earlier, just wondering if we have any club or forum members close? Of course there will be plenty of fish keepers at the next club meeting in Waterview on Tues the 13th of September if you wanted to come along and say hi Liza77
  21. Ammonia is bad means the tank isn't cycled or is going through a mini cycle.. You can cycle your tank with that many fish, but you will need to be monitoring things and changing water to keep that ammonia right down (but you do need to leave some to allow the bacteria to build up). I think your best bet would be to get someone local with a tank setup and get some cycled media to get yours going.
  22. As of a few weekends ago I have a pair of big blaze ones (full yellow blaze right to nose and good blue in body).. Thought I was going to loose the female she was so ratty but she is recovering nicely, once she has fattened up will be putting them together and trying to breed them.. I also met a guy who brought some dems off me the other day and he said he has a pair of big blaze ones and fry so I have asked him if I can view and buy some when they are ready..
  23. Yeah we can feed the sharks some pullock Could be fun..
  24. I agree without their sponsorship the raffles wouldn't have happened and the club would have incurred a significant cost going to the expo, it is awesome to have the support of shops!
