  1. Because of the footprint of the tank you could probably get away with yellows and some peacocks, maybe even dems.. It is an odd shaped tank though.. What part of Auckland do you live in?
  2. Looks good, I would add more rocks in the back though to make more territories for the dems and places to hide, the dems will love the plants they will probably eat them all when they get bigger.. Stocking list should be good too probably too many yellows given that they get bigger than the dems so you might end up with more yellow but they will still look good and get along if you like it that way. I have clowns with my africans too with no issues, like I said if you wanted to come out and have a look just let me know
  3. As others have suggested just DIY, cut the old one yet, get some new glass cut and silcone it back in, or get a patch cut, but a complete replacement is always going to be better.. You could join the local fish club and they might be able to fix it as a DIY meeting sometime
  4. I guess you could coil up a heap of pipes in an old fridge/freezer and have water pumping through it, and just use some sort of thermostat to control the pump that pumps the water.
  5. It is a bit hard to know what is needed on hand, I would just have the basics like salt.. I would look around so that you can source metro/prazi and also source some furan if your LFS doesn't stock it off the shelf, I figure most things you would need to treat with any of these drugs you usually have a few days in which to do it so as long as you make sure you can easily source it locally you should be fine.
  6. Id probably buy sheets of glass learn to cut it and make my own tanks to spend more on fish
  7. I wish I had $40k too.. Would be $20k on setting up the tanks, $20k on getting some descent fish in
  8. I thought that reptiles were already allowed in the current photo comp?

    yellow labs

There is always a chance but as Smidey has said in this setup it is very slim if it did occur then the fry would be pretty munted and obviously not yellows..
  10. It would depend on too many variables.. The amount it would cost is dependant on how long it is on so it woudl depend on the size of the tank, how insulated it was and the ambient temperature of the room. I think someone stuck up a calculator on here a while back..
  11. Yeah the whole poking holes in an insulated box seemed to defeat the purpose to me too That was why I just chuck a bag of warm water in there too that is guaranteed. Heat pads go in just so that people are happy but I don't think they do stuff all.
  12. There are all sorts on trademe.. Stuff like this http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Heating-cooling/Other/auction-406864832.htm they are the same as aquarium ones these ones are 12 hour I think there are also 20 hour ones on there I am sure you can find them. I don't bother with the 40 hour ones, I just chuck a bag of warm water in there with fish when I ship them and haven't had any issues. I have found all heatpads go cold in shipping anyway, however people have suggested sticking the heatpad to the lid and poking holes in behind it to increase airflow so I might try that next time.

Acei no sorry But yellows would be great, even add upto 10 to break things up.. Another option would be tropheops they are another nice fish (blue males bright yellow/orange females) that are here and stay relatively small and not that aggressive, mine are just looking like breeding
  14. From memory one gill flaring more than the other is a sign of gill flukes.. So you would need to treat for that, probably praziquental would be the best but I think you can use PP and salt as well.
  15. And of course looked at some great photos and learnt some stuff about taking photos It was a good meeting, good to meet some new people, and thanks firenz for coming along and teaching us about photography.
  16. That looks like a male taenatus to me too..
  17. To save money and meds you can always lower your water level enough that your filter and heater are still underwater..
  18. 29 from a yellow isn't bad going, I have got upto 35 from big female yellows before.. My biggest dem one is 37 dems from a mouthful which I thought was pretty good.. I have had giraffes hold over 100 (got 211 from 2 females) and when I had them I regularly had big female ob zebras hold 60+. Typically I have found most malawi females around average size hold 20-30 fry.
  19. Awesome it would be good to see you there . And anyone else remember the meeting is tomorrow..
  20. Yes I know him quite well he is a mate, If you want me to pass on your details to him so he can contact you then let me know.
  21. Have you tried your petshop? Did you read any of the article I posted above? It has tons of info on treatment and symptoms and various other things..
  22. Baking soda is PH up That is all it is.. There is no real dosage rate just keep adding it gradually until the desired KH and PH levels are reached, for my africans I use 1 tps per 20L.
  23. Yeah that was what I was thinking.. There is a good article here that goes through all sorts of stuff.. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/columnaris_disease.php But generally if it is columnaris then your pretty stuffed for getting rid of it
  24. You say they have a cotton problem? Can you explain that further.. Salt can be added as much as 1TBS per 4L or I will chuck 1 handful in a 2ft tank and go up from there, obviously observing the fish to ensure that none stress out too much because some fish are supposed to be sensitive to salt.
  25. Nice video your fish look good, however you need to remove the afra from that first tank he is the boss and the tank isn't big enough for the other fish to have enough space to be happy. Notice how he is in the middle of the tank and all the other fish are getting chased to the fringes and hanging out around the top it is not a good sign.
