  1. As above don't get that fish! Ice blues are agro as anything especially adult males.. They have been known to take over half a 6ft tank by themselves and they would destroy your other smaller fish if you added them later.. The best bet is to buy all your fish young (and cheap) and grow them out that way they all get along and it all works out.. It pays to be patient, I got my original demasonis straight from their mothers mouth and its been a year and a half waiting for them to grow to their full size and get the breeding sorted out, same with most the peacocks I have it can take 10 or so months for them to attain good colour etc patience is a virtue
  2. lol that is getting confusing Anyway the lurker should join!
  3. Trademe reference removed. I had no idea that chilumba's had been in nz for 8 years, I know alot of the established breeders that have everything that is and was avaliable didn't have them.. I have seen a very similair fish sold under royal blue (not red shoulders) that are blue all over but they weren't chilumba's but very similair.
  4. Awesome there would be alot of people keen to get hold of them then! So when's are you signing up lurker?
  5. Hope they're actual chilumba's! Not the hybrid ones that were passed around Sounds like he should definately join if he's into africans
  6. lol lurker if you breed cichlids you should definately join up and if you do favours like that then you can't be that bad, even just join up to let us know what you breed
  7. lol that is a dead ringer for the tank I used to own even down to the water mark on the front where it got wet.. lol I guess more than one tank the same can be made And you are best to overstock an african tank for aggression reasons that tank looks big but because its all height its not ideal, if you rocked up the whole back so the fish had somewhere to hide it would be ok.
  8. Bloodworms are known to cause voilent and almost fatal reactions in some people lol wouldn't have thought it would do that to your nose though! Did they make you sneeze?
  9. lol I never thought I would see that tank again! I owned it when we were in Auckland and had it setup as a amazon planted tank in my lounge.. Sold it off because it held alot of water but didn't have much footprint so wasn't good for when I moved into cichlids I'm glad to see its still around it was cool.. Does it still have a ton of lights in the hood?
  10. Awesome well I hope you enjoy them If I had known someone was wanting some I could have sold you some I have a heap here growing out that would be ready in a few month's alot cheaper than the petshops and they are third generation babies and I have seen no randoms so they're pure which is always 50/50 with petshop fish especially zebra's. They should be alright in a 200L tank just watch the males aggression and give them a heap of places to hide, adding some more fish would help.
  11. I bred the dem's for that tank and sold them to him for $5ea. Yellows are around the same price when small. Peacocks can be around $8ea from a breeder when small more when bigger and sexable there are lots of different types commonly avaliable and upto $50ea in shops. You could probably stock your tank for $150-200 top's.
  12. I don't know if you saw this.. http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/my-fir ... 27286.html But it is exactly what your suggesting with your african alternative.. Only difference is that the tank in the link has baenshi not red shoulders in it each to their own they're both nice fish though.. And yes get at least 12 dem's more if you can afford it.
  13. I keep and breed these.. Also known as red zebra's even though they're not red.. Typical zebra's can be quite agro and look after themselves especially when breeding.. I keep mine in a mixed tank with all sorts in it and they get along alright They can also get relatively big relatively quickly (15cm's or so for a male) I have also found like most zebra's the males can get very agro towards females I have 1m 4f and that seems to work alright. The ones that I have the males are pink and the females stay orange, however there are different strains some males stay orange some go red and apparently some are blue but I haven't seen any of them. How big is your tank and how many did you get? What sexes are they? Did you get them from a breeder or petshop? Another important point I should add is if you house these with any other zebra species it is very likely they will cross breed so bear this in mind when stocking your tank and also potentially breeding and selling any babies (don't pass hybrids on). I have to catch mine out of the display tank put them in their own tank to breed and then stick them back when im done breeding them to ensure the babies are pure. Heres a link for you. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/met_estherae.php
  14. She is not going to make it.. Im not sure on breeding the golds and blues together..
  15. Glad to hear someone kept them alive.. Out of the 4 golds and 4 blues I got I have one male gold left.. And one sad female blue! Its not cool at all... The best male gold is alive though seems a shame to not have a girlfriend for him
  16. The pair of tetras most likely wont breed in a breeding net and if they do they will eat most or all of the egg's and the babies probably need their own tank to darkent and treat so they don't fungus.. There is no point in sticking a pair of swords in there either the female will already be pregnant and has no need for the male. Also if she's all couped up in there chance are she will eat her babies as she drops them.. Guppies might work, however the best way to do them is to set them up with their own tank with lots of plants and let them drop and babies survive.. My main question for you is if your having to cram all these fish up in little containers to breed them where are you going to grow the babies out? Say each of these guppies has 20 babies you will have 100 of them and you can't raise them in a 5 way breeder thing (im presuming you have one of those betta traps) I would recommend buying some tanks so you have some room to do all this breeding
  17. You really really need to do your research on tropheus before buying them.. As far as africans go they are pretty hard to kill and also expensive I would hate for you to buy them all and have them die.. I would use coral sand/lime chips/argonite as substrate you should be able to get some down there from your petshop or check around on trademe best place to get it cheap is people who keep marines as they seem to have a stash of it.. Rocks you can use what you want to as long as its safe, limestone rocks will help with the buffering also, check a garden centre or landscape supplies for these. Have you researched the water conditions food etc these guys prefer?
  18. I would say no to the 3 in a 3ft tank without dividers.. You can put dividers in and not have them giong to the bottom of the tank or just seal them in and have a heater in the middle with some airstones by the divisions to create water flow and heat the outside ones of course you would have to have filters in each compartment... If your that tight on tank space what are you going to grow out the 1000's of baby angels and hatch the eggs that 3 pairs can produce in?
  19. lol never seen that before? Probably some sort of aggression/playing.. But who knows.. 32 is a pretty high temp I hope you've increased your aeration too!
  20. What David said.. If there is no syphon break or one way valve and the return pump fails the water can syphon down the return pipe and overflow the sump..
  21. lol I don't even think ill bother sticking the sub back in its just not worth it.. I used to have sounds but that was in the GTX, WRX, GTIR day's.. Again these cars are not pratical with the current price of gas and having children hence the family wag But getting sick of the crappy stereo with no band expander.
  22. lol yep all of my free poly is fireproof That was one of the main attrations of it, it is used in house insulation and cannot be melted down and reused like normal poly so the poly places have to pay to dump it they're more than happy to give it away..
  23. Mine get what all the other fish get NLS spirilina flake and my own home made frozen food.. They seem to do well on it I let algae grow on everything but the front pain of glass maybe they munch on that I haven't seen them do that though..
  24. Yeah I did have a look at the windows haven't seen anything like that.. Even my pulsar had a standard aerial Well aware of what they do and that there is no way I can blow stuff up.. Cheers Tiden will call into a car audio place and see what they have.
