  1. I'm still not 100% on those fish being Johannii, the heavy vertical barring just doesn't seem to add up to me, yes I know they are sold as johannii here.. I need to wait until I am home and go through the konnings book and see if there are any variants that match the fish you have put pics up of. Biggest issue with melanchromis is there are so similar that there are so many hybrids floating around and being NZ we get the dregs.
  2. Just a reminder to all AFA members and prospective new members that the club will be having its AGM on the 13th March so please try keep that date free, think of any changes you would like made and any positions you may want to take in the club Hopefully the AGM should be pretty quick and painless not too boring so don't be put off!
  3. The AFA will be having its Feb meeting next Tuesday the 14th of Feb. The meeting will be a casual new year get together at the Cock and Bull Lynnfield, it is a nice family friendly place so feel free to bring kids/partners etc to catch up. All new members welcome so feel free to come along and say hi.
  4. lol Awesome video love it. :slfg:
  5. I can't see the insurance company repainting the whole car they would probably just get the panel beater to match it as close as possible.
  6. Yeah as others have said get in touch with her insurance company, only issue could be proving who was at fault if police came and there were no witnesses.. You are really running a huge risk driving around without your own insurance though, even 3rd party covers your ass for allot of stuff..
  7. It just soaks in the crap that it needs to and then sits there, there are some theories that it can actually release it again.. Regardless unless you are adding it for a reason (remove meds etc) then just take it out and bin it it isn't needed. Some even go as far as to say it can cause more issues than it is worth if used all the time.
  8. Happy birthday Hope you have a good day! Gotta be good to not be at work
  9. A mate of mine tried to have a male empress and taiwan in his male only display tank and the empress killed the taiwan so you would have to watch that
  10. Yes they will interbreed they are the same family and females are very similar, males of these 2 species also don't get along very well due to being similar. All mouth brooding cichlids can crossbreed some more likely than others, only way to guarantee pure fry is to breed in species tanks.
  11. Could be a male or a pic with flash on of a female, there is no sign of any blaze through dorsal fin so hard to pick male, rip it out and vent it.. Litho males tend to be very reluctant to colour up in the presence of any bigger more dominant fish.
  12. Lol no comment on other things it's a family show But it is very common for 4cm yellows to breed, i have had others like brown haps and jacobfrybergi peacocks breed at the same size. It is always crazy seeing a tiny fish holding but hardly worth stripping I usually just let them practise holding..
  13. That is awesome A friend of mine made a quadrotor for a uni project, they had it all programmed with FPGAs and sensors everywhere so it could fly around without crashing into anything.. He showed me this video as a good practical use of quadrotors with cameras on them.. http://vimeo.com/15867732
  14. Yep sounds about right to me too, can take allot of mucking around to get them all bagged right and safely.
  15. My suggestion is no good if they are laminated Try and sell them you will probably find they are worth nothing and it will be more hassle than it is worth..
  16. Think I might just chuck it in a corner and go from there.. Seems so much easier That would be a disaster waiting to happen, if your pumps weren't matched then you would get a flood..
  17. Sound like perfect front pieces to some nice plywood tanks get your DIY on!
  18. I am going to setup a tank with a sump and have just got all the bits to build a durso. Now I am at the stage where I want to drill and build the overflow and get things started but started thinking of a few issues.. I was just going to build a standard square overflow in one back corner and be done with it, but then I thought if I wanted to move or sell the tank in the future and it was in the wrong corner it would be a pain. Then I thought I could build it in the centre of the tank but it would reduce the amount of space I have in the centre of the tank to put rock etc. So I came across things like below, basically a siphon overflow with external box and durso. Obviously not to keen on siphon based because of reliability so not so sure on how good that would be? http://randystacye.com/dursostandpipe.htm What other options have people used?
  19. I have kept and bred plenty of ice blues over the years and found them to be down right nasty.. I had a male take over half of my 5x2x2ft tank which was wall to wall fish and was just shredding everything.. Removed him only to have another male take over, grew up fry and found the same thing kept happening, same thing happened to those mates of mine that I sold fry to, so I decided they were a bit unethical to breed and sell and would cause people too many problems. My personal recommendation would be to only keep them with other mbuna in big tanks. Maybe I had a particularly agro strain or something like that? Who knows, but reserach on the internet tends to suggest that they can be up on the higher end of the aggression list. They are bloody nice fish and you can't beat them for colour, a tank filled with them and aurora just looks amazing!
  20. Nice fish! It is good to see some good quality orange flashes around, I haven't seen ones that good for quite a few years.. I agree with your sexing stuff, on top of the black edging to the pelvic fin another sign is squaring of the tail fin, probably a bit hard with these ones because the smaller ones have been a bit battered but looks promising.
  21. It is not an issue of the plug but an issue that the circuitry inside is designed to be powered by 100v ac not 230 like we have here.. As Ira has said it won't be happy, only option would be to get a transformer to convert 230 to 110 but it's probably easier to just source a 230v one..
  22. I would either keep them our bounce them.. If you keep them then you can't keep them with any other zebras because they will cross breed (should be doing most your breeding in species tanks anyway so that wont be an issue). Best way to get rid of them is to take them outside and smash them into the concrete as hard as possible it just kills them instantly. If your not that brutal then you can use clove oil etc. I have in the past given hybrid fish produced in mixed tanks to people, but you do have to be very selective who you give them to because most of the time they end up back in the mix being sold again and people cross them with pure lines and muck everything. End of the day you can do what you like with the ones you have and it wont make any difference, only takes a 5min browse on trademe or walking into any store to identify everyone breeding hybrids and giving them pure names, happens everywhere and is particularly bad in NZ. I really get sick of this attitude, yes it is how cichlids evolved! But think you should leave it to nature until you have millions of years and you can replicate the environmental conditions and circumstances that brought species together and decided which way they evolved. Lets just enjoy what limited pure fish we do have in the country
  23. Happy birthday Caryl! I hope you have a good day as well.. :sage:
  24. Golden severum and maybe an oscar it is hard to tell when the fish is up on an angle (it looks like it was about to get a hiding). Either way the tank is too small for them..
