Yeah they are awesome little fish they are in the country though, I just got 8 of them and I am hoping to breed them if they will do it for me.. There should still be people around keeping/breeding them..

Maybe some celestial pearl danios they stay very small and are cool little fish

Awesome cheers Jenniferh I was hoping someone might have some sort of back ground in it to give more insight than the MSDS I think I keep changing the water for a week or so.. Then I am away for a month so I might just fill them up and dump them at the back of the section to soak up anything that may be left in there, then chuck some guppies in when I am back to make sure it is ok Diver21 not a bad idea on the PH front I had considered that but my tap water comes out at 10ish (its a bit random actually we are yet to figure out why the ph meters don't really like it but its pretty high) and I also have no idea how long it would actually take for anything to leach out so don't know when to do the test..

I have got a couple of blue 200L drums that used to contain a product called "transwash" here is the MSDS for it http://www.mchem.co.nz/msds/Transwash.pdf the bit that worries me is "Harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects." Each drum has been rinsed out 3 times and there is no detergent type bubbles when you tip them out but I am just worried about how much may have leached into the plastic (if this is at all possible) as I plan to use these for collecting rain water and the water may sit in them for long periods of time soaking up anything that may have been in the plastic. Any other ideas on how to clean them out or is what I am doing ok?

Do you have anything in the tank that was not supplied from a petshop that might be poisonous? To me it almost sounds like you are buying diseased fish straight from the petshop and they are setting you up.. It is very common these days, of course without seeing the fish in the shop it is hard to know for sure. If you have healthy fish to begin with then they shouldn't be getting sick as long as your tank is big enough, given you gradually added the fish over a period a month had the water tested heaps with no problems showing up.

Yeah most vets will prescribe it if you describe what you want it for and actually know what dosage how many pills etc you want.. So you have to sound like you know what you are doing with it otherwise they wont have a bar of it. Sometimes doctors/Nurses maybe able to help source it too as it is used to treat humans..

I am pretty sure that the fish has already been treated with praziquental and PP which should have wiped out any gill flukes if there were any. Same with a salt bath it wont really achieve anything as you have already used 2 treatments for parasites. That is why I suggested treating with metro as I have seen fish go off their food and then start gasping, I would suggest that maybe the gasping is a secondary thing caused by something going wrong internally hence the treatment with metro.. End of the day it is just a guess, IME if the fish is off its food and gasping then it is probably already too late to turn things around.

cant believe the conditions of the african cichlids in oz
ryanjury replied to trace&steve's topic in Cichlids
It is a shame that the fish were in poor condition Maybe you went to the wrong sorts of shops? I think you also maybe fairly spoilt for choice down there with so many shops and local breeders as alot of the stuff that comes through the wholesalers in NZ can be pretty sad looking too.. Regarding the dog I can't see livingarts link at the moment but I would do some research and/or maybe contact the kennel club.. I would think it is the kennels responsibility to keep yours and other peoples dog safe, but then again I could understand if they did charge you for vet bills because what if your dog was a phyco (not saying yours is) and beat other dogs up. But then again they should keep them all separate to avoid it happening, did they ask you when you dropped her off if she was socialized and if they could put her with other dogs? And like Phoenix did they have different options/pricing for keeping dogs together? -
I would say it is not water conditions Is there any small white lumps on the fishes head? Almost sounds like gill flukes to me too but it is really hard to tell what was the wormer you used? I would be tempted to try some epsoms salts and metro just in case there is something internally wrong that is causing him not to eat.. PP is pretty nasty stuff usually last resort. http://www.discusnews.com/article/cat-02/pp.shtml

I have heard that anything over 3% spirulina is bad for the fish.. But I used to feed spirulina flake and pellets all the time with no ill effect apart from the black spots they sometimes got so I am unsure how true that is? Agreed with the bloodworms, I don't feed them to any fish to any of my fish they are linked to all sorts of problems, or should I say often associated with all sorts of problems.. It maybe all rubbish but I am not prepared to take the risk

Simon "thefishtank" imported some from Aussies as a trial, I have tried to get in touch with him via the forums to get more but he doesn't seem to be logging on anymore I have just sent him an email. His details are available here viewtopic.php?f=24&t=42128 It is very good stuff and the prices he was talking about getting more for worked out cheaper than anything else you could buy. http://s1.zetaboards.com/PrestigeAquatics/index/ http://s1.zetaboards.com/PrestigeAquati ... products1/

Mine get nutrifin max flake, salmon pellets, prestige and home made food.. I used to have issues with sunken in stomachs until I started the salmon pellets which are really fatty and the prestige which is just awesome food, can't wait to get more they pile on the condition on it, there is the risk of causing bloat in mbuna on it though but I have only bloated one dem on it which came right with only 1 day on metro and has been fine since so might have been something else.

lol do you know anyone who has anything to do with electronics? Even someone who actually understood it in 5ft form science? Its not hard but would be hard to explain.. Its a pity I am not closer otherwise I would say bring it over and ill figure it out Would just hate to see you replace a pump when it could just be a broken wire or dodgy panel..
-
lol just remember if you do that Bulls is on the way too SamH it was sarcasm I believe that alot of people overdo it.. And while it isn't a bad thing I think alot of people take this advice as gospel and waste alot of money on gear they don't need.. A lightly stocked tank that isn't over fed and has regular water changes and some plants will remain stable on its own.
-
Yeah I remember trying to track some down as well but no luck.. I should have brought them from the petshop when they had them, but I think by the stage I say them they had a tank full of males (maybe they were only supplied males?) Anyway congrats Caryl keep the going I am surprised your fish are living with no filtration the general advice I have seen on here recently is no matter what fish no matter what sized tank it has to have the biggest canister filter affordable and at least 10x per hour filtration..

A few years ago I brought 30 baby discus (like 10mm long) off trademe thinking I would raise them and get a tank full.. I lost every single one to what sounds like a similar thing. Things I found out: Discus don't move or acclimatize very well when small don't try and do it until they are 40-50mm long. They most likely had flukes when I got them and needed treatment at the time I didn't have the experience or the access to the drugs to fix it.. The breeder I purchased them off probably should have been more help (I emailed him asking for help and he said "oh well") and not sold me sick fish, I met a few afterwards who had exactly the same problem with fish from him. I would treat your tank with metro and prazi. Hopefully someone local can help you with the metro, for the prazi ring around your local vets and ask if anyone has droncit (not drontal) and buy a few. There is plenty of info on dosage etc on here using the search function but from memory. Temp upto 30C I 50mg prazi tab per 25L of water 1 400mg metro tab per 40L of water daily with large water changes I am sure others will be able to help more I usually just add enough prazi to replace the water I water change as it is supposed to last a few days in water and fully redose metro every day as it only lasts 8 hours in water.

It shouldn't be too hard to test if it is working, first test voltage out of panel, test wires from panel to pump, test the pump with a 9V battery and then you should be able to find out exactly what is wrong and fix that.. I haven't really looked too hard but I don't think I have seen 6-9V DC pumps at bunnings before? Most are 230V ones..

Redwood aquatics may also be able to help..

I think the best filtration method is very debatable.. Some will say the best is a 3000LPH external, others a big sump or maybe even undergravel filter maybe with reverse power heads on the uplifts.. Personally I would say for most uses a 1200LPH filter would be perfect for the job and more than capable of filtering for a moderately stocked tank. I have a 200L tank with 1 huge 1200LPH hang on the back filter, and one 1200LPH canaster.. But also have a 150L tank heavily stocked with 2 small bubble filters in it that keep the water crystal clear, and have a 200L also running a single bubble filter these seem to do the job really well.. All depends what you like and what suits you.

lol that is a good message for the new year, lets hope the forums are burn free

That is a sweet photo

Sounds like some very good advice there If I also read correctly did you dose with drontal or droncit? Drondal contains other stuff that I am unsure is good for fish, droncit is pure prazi..
-
It is certainly possible but you have to remember when dealing with people who have less experience in fish you have to make things easy for them. Testing the tank water or doing lots of water changes so you can cram a heap of fish in earlier is not easy.. IMO getting a few fish gradually and explaining how it all works would have been a better approach. Anyway this isn't the place for a discussion on this really, breakaway keep a good eye on your fish and water parameters and good luck getting rid of your white spot I hope your fish are all ok It might pay to do 2 water changes a week (redosing with meds as needed) and feed lightly to keep that ammonia under control and let the tank cycle.
-
lol water change and aeration won't do anything for white spot though.. Regardless of how cheap neons are good advice about stocking and cycling should be given by any petshop staff who knows anything about fish. There are plenty of ways to slowly stock a tank so they fish aren't stressed and don't get sick, if it hadn't have been noticed this person may have had white spot forever loosing all their fish thought it was too hard and then given up.. All because of some poor advice from pet shop staff. I am surprised you didn't pick up on this from working in a pet shop morcs? You must encounter it all the time..
-
The salt will clear up the white spot just as well as the white spot cure, I have found that the blue circle white spot cure works the best. Personally I am worried about the fact you stuck 10 neons and 2 plattys in quite a small tank to start the cycle, maybe the fish are under alot of stress and this could be why the fish have got white spot? I probably would have started off with just the plattys for 2 weeks then added 5 neons then in a few more weeks add another 5. For a few weeks I would only feed small amounts every second day to reduce the load on the filter and let it cycle. Have you breed measuring any of your water parameters?
