    Vent photos

    i'd say both are females.
  2. Worms are alright in moderation, blood worms are the better out of all of all of them, tubflex worms can cause bacteril infections, whiteworms has something to do with there fat content and the gonads which can harm the fish if fed to often. I'll just crush up some flake real fine till our bs eggs arrive.
  3. Whats the next best thing from bbs that we can feed just gone free swimming fry, she just spat them out today so dont have anything ready so need a quick solution. Any ideas would be much appreciated.
  4. Meeting tonight, supposed to be a speaker about marine tanks so all are welcome to come along, message me for details.
  5. Our big giraffe hap has fungus on his eye, i treated with salt yesterday, then noticed brown tinge to water today(no drift wood in the tank) so did a 25% water change and added a bit more salt for the salt i took out, now i know meth blue is the best for fungus but when we went to hollywoods they didn't have any, the said white spot cure is about 70% meth blue and to put one drop of it directly on his eye everyday, would this be alright i should i just keep treating with salt???
  6. Yes have watched them feeding, and there is no apparently surface scum... the only that is left is the only one that hides the whole time, the rest of them weren't shy fish and were always out and about.
  7. Hey guys just wondering what we are doing wrong, so far have brought 6 of these fellas (4 from jansens and 2 from hollywoods) and they have all died, last for about 3-4 weeks and then just one day they disappear and find them floatinng a couple of days later with no apparent swelling or injuries. They are kept in a 3foot which is about 120L. No nitrites, ammonia, very low nitrate levels, under 10ppm temp is about 26 and not sure of pH but theres breeding guppys in there a school of neon's (about 15) a couple or 3 platties, 2 sae, and 3 skunk loach's which are all as happy as larry and never seem to lose any of them. What are we doing wrong to make the dwarf gourami's die. They are feed spirulina flake and brine shrimp flake and the occasional bit of frozen brineshrimp.
  8. This is how i done it and its working really well for me, Bottom - Most coarse sponge and plastic bioballs (collects all the big waste) Middle - Finer sponge and ceramic noddles (collects the smaller waste) Top - filter wool (just used to polish the water and barely gets clogged) Put the sponge at the bottom of the tray and the noodles on top, use the sponge to catch all the waste and the noodles/balls to act as the biological filter. That way the noodles/balls dont get clogged up and you never have to rinse them.
  9. I just make up like a tablespoon of eggs in one go and then freeze the rest in a bit of water, that way you always have bbs on hand and it cant be any different to the shop frozen stuff.

    fungus

Just don't dose salt and anything else at the same time. Use either the M.blue or M.green OR salt.
  11. I'm not talking about water from your taps which is full of minerals and stuff im talking about 100% pure water, it all has something to do with the equilibrium of the H2O molecules and the H3O+ ions and OH- ions.
  12. Lol no, but it's not set at room temperature either so that means its gonna be somewhere between a pH of 7 and 6.13.
  13. rather than taking the cap off the spray bar, just face the spray into a corner of the tank or something like that so it has to rebound off the sides of the tank first.
  14. All depends on what you are keeping in it, discus i'd say way to big, malawi's or some other types of cichlids i'd say it'd be fine. you could always restrict the flow a bit so it's not quite much flow.
  15. Thought everyone might find this interesting, found it out today in a chemistry lecture. The pH of pure water at room temperature is about 7 The pH of pure water at 100 degrees C, is about 6.13. So this means that if you are using water from you hot water cylinder or heated water, chance's are that you are using water with a lower pH than 7, all of course depends on what else is dissolved into your water, BUT as this water cool's back down again it's pH will increase back to 7

    rocks

Siliconing rocks together is quite hard they dont really stick to eachother, you need to clean the rocks perfectly to get an alright seal, i read on the satlwater forum you could use aquaneed it or something like that, it's what they use for gluing there coral rock together and gluing the corals down.
  17. It's a territorail thing most of our malawi males do it.
  18. i would recommend checking your nitrates first aswell, if you can't seen any visible signs on there body, it can't really be a skin parasite otherwise after a while they would show sores or the parasite, so my guess is the gills so unless you have a gill parasite my bet would be on high nitrate's even smallish amounts 20+ will irritate some fish if they are used to low amounts.
  19. If it was the foul smelling tank could also be a nitrate problem, as the nitrate increases it irritate's the fish and cause's them to itch, one of our smaller tanks that is a lil over crowded start itching on the rocks everytime i leave them a lil longer than there usually water change and when i test the nitrates they are up around 40ppmish and 50ppm is the limit before it can cause major problems.
  20. Why is mine only growing about 3cm high but has huge leave's is this cause my substrate isn't deep enough or something else?
  21. Sounds like just a general dark green algae, one of the more pain in the bum ones which needs to be scrapped off, we get ir on our slow growing plants and the bristlenose;s dont seem to be able to eat it, doesnt cause a problem and dont have a major with it but it's there in small amounts. Try going to plantgeek.com or cichlid-forum.com there are some good pages all about algae on there.

    Flameback

What is his size compared to the size they get to? he could still be a juvie, but if he's warn down his fins from slidding along the bottom that would worry me a bit.
  25. Flourish is a general alround fertiliser, and floursih excell is a carbon supplement.
