  1. Black zebra lace has stripes between the stripes and then spots between them as well. Only double blacks are weak, thats why it is best not to breed black to black
  2. Generally true but more obvious in goldfish.
  3. If they are a pair and want to spawn they will both be hanging around the spawning area so keep an eye on the female and see where she goes. They will define an area and protect it together.
  4. They are cave breeders and the male could well be in a cave if you have one or could hve made one to rear young if colouring up.
  5. I have succssfully used H2O2 before but I can't remember the dose---someone else may.
  6. When feeling romantic the males develop pimple-like lumps on the gill plates and the leeding edge of the pectoral fins and they use these to stimulate the females (a bit like roses and chocs) The gill plates are the covers over the gills and the pectoral fins are the ones just below.
  7. On the bottom pic is that lumps on the gill plates?
  8. Probably gone home to the missus
  9. Blue/green algae does that.
  10. You need to go back to where the info was published. If it was US it will be US gallons. Anywhere else will be UK gallons
  11. Everybody in the world who used to use gallons will use UK gallons (like us) The US is the only place that uses US gallons. Aquariums are often refered to by the way they were built such as a four footer. A 24x12x12 tank was 2ftx1ftx1ft and held 12 UK gallons, was 2 cubic ft and each inch of water was a gallon (UK). 30 years ago everybody had one, it was made from recycled glass from broken shop windows and the pet shops paid $12.50 for it. If you have an American recipe it will be USgallons.
  12. It can't cycle unless you put some fish in there.
  13. Has the sterbai pectoral fins
  14. They are very productive breeders but not good community fish so therefore hard to sell or even give away. That is why they are often used to feed to other fish when young. If you want to raise them you could siphon them out, put them in a bare tank and feed them brine shrimp nuplii and microworm. The parents will generally go again in no time.
  15. Everyone has their own preferences and mine is a mixture of growlux (10000K) and cool white (4000K) 4 x 40watts is twice what I have but mine are on 17hrs/day. You have plenty of light but I am not familiar with those tubes.
  16. Again, 400mg/100litres but fix the cause (usually too much PO4 low NO3)
  17. Have a look at the breeding pair. Female has more intense red belly, rounded tail and shorter rounded dorsel fin. Male has pointed tail and longer pointed dorsel fin. Male is usually bigger.
  18. A water change is a candle lit dinner for goldfish.
  19. The last time I used it the filter was killed off and so were the fish with the resulting spike. I have used it before at the same dose rate without problems but it is something to be aware of. By tha time I moved the fish to another tank the damage had been done and they died over the next couple of weeks. Antibiotics are designed to kill bacteria. If you only use antibiotics and don't correct the imbalance that is causing the problem you will get it back again.
  20. Unless it says it is fully submersable it should be straight up and down with the cap at the top out of the water and the rest in, or it may leak water.
  21. Some swords (like radicans-now cordifolius)mature into an emersed state and all you see in the tank is the stalks. If that is the case you might be better to get one that is not a tank buster.
  22. If it is a male the "spots" will be like little pimples that you can feel and they will be on the gill plates and leading edge of the pectoral fins. Females can have them as well but not often and lots less. Males chase females.
  23. Bring the empties and we can start again.
